WHO WE ARE Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation spearheading powerful and positive change to create a future where every young person has the freedom, dignity and choice to live the lives we all deserve. There are simply too many young people (aged 18-65) in Australia being left behind, living in inappropriate and unacceptable housing, such as aged care, hospital rooms and institutionalised group homes. These young people deserve the freedom to choose where they live, who they live with and how they live their lives. It’s up to all of us to make sure that happens. THE YOUNGCARE JOURNEY For 14 years, we have been fighting to make a difference to the lives of young people with high care needs and the loved ones who care for them. Our fight continues. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN... It was one couple’s struggle to find dignified and appropriate care that inspired the formation of Youngcare. In 2005, four mates vowed to change the gap in care provision for young people with high care needs. At 33 years of age Shevaune Conry, who had Multiple Sclerosis, ended up living in aged care as it was the only place that could provide for her 24/7 care needs. With the purpose to create brighter futures for young people with high care needs, Youngcare was born. The Youngcare found ers with inspiration Shevaune It is with renewed energy that we are leading much-needed change in the LOOKING disability housing sector. With the insight and experience of the people we help firmly steering us we are rallying change makers across the country - FORWARD industry, government and community - to shape a national solution.

THE CONDUIT FOR CHANGE There is a residential and care crisis throughout Australia for young people with high care needs. The crux of this crisis is the lack of opportunity for each person living with disability to choose their own pathway. Youngcare is boldly tackling this national issue by acting as the conduit for industry, government and community to work together to bring much-needed change to the disability housing sector. The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will enable Youngcare to further enhance our impact in the disability sector. Living in aged care, I lost all sense of myself as an individual. It was frustrating and demoralising. The difference between what my life was like in aged care and what it is like now, there are no words to be able to describe it. I am extremely grateful for my new place thanks to Youngcare.” Karina Dentice – Home Soon Grant Recipient
THE OPPORTUNITY AT HOME. AT LAST. Suitable and appropriate supported housing is one of the greatest areas of unmet need for people with disabilities in Australia. Over the past 14 years Youngcare has led the disability sector in designing the first age appropriate homes for young people with high care needs. With the introduction of the NDIS we believe this is a watershed moment for the disability sector and Youngcare will pursue leaders within the private sector, working in partnership to solve this residential crisis once and for all. We will unite with investors, developers and care providers to increase the number of premium homes for young people with high care needs. With your help, Youngcare can make a greater impact, building homes that are specifically designed to promote the best choice for our residents to live young and independent lives. We are now inviting partners to work with us and utilise our premium design and care knowledge, along with our strong brand and share in the SDA investment opportunity presented by the NDIS. CHOOSE US Youngcare is fighting for freedom of choice for young people with high care needs and their loved ones. “Nick is a very social person, so it is great for him to have the company of young people his own age who he can have fun with. The feeling of relief, knowing he is living somewhere he is happy and well cared for, is indescribable. I feel like I have got my life back too and can live without the constant worry of Nick being somewhere he isn’t safe and happy.” Nick - Youngcare Gill, Nick’s mother Wooloowin Share House Resident “I get up at 6.30am and I don’t rest until bed time. Scottie needs to be with me 24 hours a day and just wants to do all of the things other 24 year old men do. We only get so much funding for respite from the government and there has always been a big gap. When I applied for the Youngcare At Home Care Grant I was at my wits end. The grant came along just at the right time. To say it was a huge help is an understatement. This grant has saved my life.” rant recipien t Home Care G Scottie - At Rhonda, mum and full time carer “If it wasn’t for the Youngcare apartments, Tim would not have his own place, with dignified care, and the freedom to live his life as he chooses.” Jenny, Tim’s mum Tim Martin - Resident at the Youngcare Wesley Missio n Queensland Apartments at Sinnamon Park
DESIGN BUILDING MORE THAN A HOME Youngcare High Care Housing – together with the NDIS We are committed to supporting the participant’s choice to live a young life in quality housing. Youngcare’s building program designs and develops age-appropriate housing solutions where young people can live young lives with choice, independence and dignity in their own homes. To date, Youngcare has led the way across Australia in designing premium residential solutions for young people with high care needs. For 14 years we have been working and partnering with architects, developers and residents to help young people living in, or at risk of entering inappropriate housing, but there is still a significant gap in disability housing in Australia. We have learnt that there is not a one-size-fits-all solution; we are dedicated to providing the right solution for the right situation. Youngcare is fighting to create equal and aspirational lifestyles for all young people, regardless of their care needs. The NDIS and the SDA have provided Youngcare with the opportunity to become the major catalyst in uniting the private sector and the government to solve this crisis once and for all, by partnering with builders and developers to construct bespoke, high care housing for young people with high care needs. CARE A PERSONALISED APPROACH All young people deserve the freedom to choose where they live, who they live with and how they live their lives. Youngcare believes high quality person-centric care is at the heart of good health and wellbeing. Founded on best practice, working on quality standards, and guided by organisations such as Summer Foundation and Griffith University, we have developed an evidence-based care approach for participants and their care providers. Youngcare’s Y Care model centres on choice, control, freedom and dignity and will ensure all participants living in Youngcare housing are provided with the best quality care. ALWAYS HERE TO HELP The team at Youngcare will direct NDIS participants to Y Care Premium High Care Housing Solutions. Alternatively, in the absence of an NDIS plan, or a gap in funding Youngcare will refer to our grants programs or alternate organisations. OUR PROMISE All care providers operating in Youngcare High Care Housing Solutions will adapt to operate within the Y Care model and participate in ongoing audits to ensure the highest possible care provision. Youngcare will ensure that all residents of our High Care Housing Solutions recieve the same level of care in ten years as they did the day they moved in.

Trina at Wooloowin Anthony Ryan, Chief Executive Officer “There are great opportunities for progress in the disability sector in Australia right now, and Youngcare is playing a crucial role in facilitating these changes to the benefit of young people with high care needs. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some of these young people — their grit and determination is remarkable. Every young Australian deserves independence and dignity and this is what Youngcare is striving to achieve.” Sylvia Jeffreys, Youngcare National Ambassador Sylvia with Emily at Y Women Syd ney “The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has challenged Youngcare to be more nimble and more authoritative, but has not diverted us from our Mission. We continue to be that small, innovative, pioneering, transparent ‘not for loss’ that has a voice much bigger than its actual size. This year, we had a seat at the table of every major discussion regarding changes to our sector, be that with the NDIS or the Chairman Paul McLean - Youngcare Federal Government.” Paul McLean, Youngcare Chairman
