Globalisation is inextricably linked with increasing interdependence of ideas, people and
markets, especially due to the high mobility of people and the digitality of their
communication. Inasmuch as there are many benefits associated with global
interconnectedness, it however entails resistance and antagonism towards certain social
dynamics. Throughout this process various different interpretations of reality and their
contingency are unveiled. Consequently, the plausibility and design of religious claims to
validity in today’s pluralistic society are brought into the focus of theological reflection.
Within this context Theology in Times of Globalisation aims to contribute to the elucidation
of the relation of the validity and particularity of the Christian outlook and anthropology to
the legitimacy and universality of its normative claims.

(How) Can a claim to universal legitimacy be uphold? Link between the obligations of religious claims to validity and collective and individual identity formation: How can we acquire the Other? To what extend could and should religious narratives - sensibly and with reason - influence that process? Religiosity and capacity for democracy: How can the Christian outlook interchange with other global ideas? Theoretical conditions for an implementation of universal claims to validity in a pluralistic world: How are Christian social ethics supposed to deal with international power asymmetries as detriments of global commodity and financial flows? Tensions between physical distance and digital proximity: How does our sense of pre/absence change? Imagination, realisation/visualisation, constructivism. Imagined reality in religion and politics.
Habilitation treatise
In face of a vast global presence of religious ideologies, the question how to relate religious faith to
public reason gains crucial relevance. It is commonly problematised in terms of the compatibility of
‘religious‘ and ’secular’ belief systems. The project scrutinises to what extent the reconstruction of
religiosity, as a moment of imagination, generates a new understanding of the relationship between
faith and reason. It draws a parallel to those approaches in political philosophy that analyse the
rationality of recourse to the imaginary in social action.

In a globalised world, the complexity of social relations is growing. Subsequently, the question of
how society should deal with situations that are difficult to interpret is coming to the fore. Against the
backdrop of populist political styles, there seems to be good evidence for the claim, that the ability
to tolerate ambiguity is crucial for non-violent and democratic coexistence. The study examines the
potential of categories, such as ambiguity and diversity, for both the description and the normative
orientation of contemporary societies. The empirical findings of lived tolerance of ambiguity in the
context of political fields of tension are combined with reflections on the meaning of ambiguity in
religion, art and humour.
