Unable to find a carpark? Sporting P facilities bursting at the seams? The latest population data is painting a I picture of profound growth. With Kerikeri and surrounds now registering 15772 persons accounting for 25% of the entire permanent X population of the Far North, it no wonder Councillor Ann Court the infrastructure is haemorrhaging. Our primary health providers record a slightly higher percentage with 16934 patients registered in the Kerikeri catchment alone, this represents a 3.1 % annual increase. Managed properly, growth can bring greater opportunities for business success, personal growth and development and wealth sharing. Enabling better outcomes for our all of our communities. Substantial foresight and planning is required to be able to intervene at the right time in the right place and critically at the right cost. This is where we have struggled in the past. In my years on Council I have watched fantastic plans come and go as politicians and the public in general struggle with the how, where, who pays and why and often we become almost paralyzed by indecision. Growth isn’t just about new roads and carparks but these are the things that often matter on a day to day basis when we are all time challenged. Providing the necessary infrastructure for growth can’t simply about turf protectionism or personal advancement any more than it can boil down to a simple argument about why we all need to contribute to success. You may have seen the traffic counters on our main arterial routes into town and our voluntary army of orange clad students tracking your every move at major intersections as we work towards an evidentially based business plan for investment in our future. Concurrently GLG is nearing completion of a long overdue needs assessment regarding the future provision of sport and recreational facilities. We need these cunning baldrick plans to support the significant spend on the horizon. We need plans that have wide community buy-in and endorsement and critically can survive election cycles. In recognizing that we will never be able to please everyone, we will then need the intestinal fortitude to make some hard decisions and the courage to hold on to the vision of a better future.
