AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Round 1 2021 After waiting nearly 600 days since our last game, we are back! And what a way to return to footy. Round 1 had some amazing results, but most importantly over 580 kids playing across 24 teams had a memorable and exciting day. In glorious Melbourne Autumn weather, a number of teams have already found early season form. Jude Goldfarb (U16 Jets) kicked a massive 11 goals, Zac Alter (U11 Rockets) kicked 8 big ones and Micaela Ickowicz (U12 Girls) snagged 5. AJAX_JFC Ajax JFC
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U8 Rockets The U8 Rockets acquitted themselves really well versus crosstown rivals Brighton Beach Kangaroos. After a lengthy pre season the team gelled well and played some good team football. The pairing of Hoppe and Raleigh particularly formidable off the bench. Combined with the speed of Asher Miller off half back and the electrifying Kobe Lewski who kicked two consecutive goals in the third quarter and the crowd were whipped into a frenzy. The tough tagging and tackling of Asher Snider and Jordan Wiser was a delight to watch. Special mention to Jude Beggs for his hard work and Jack Lew for his leadership. A good first up effort for the developing Rockets. U8 Stars All players performed really well in their first game, all having a go. Great sportsmanship, especially by staying on the ground at the end of the game to welcome the Ajax U/8 Rockets who were playing on the same field after the Stars. Thanks to all the parents for getting your kids to the game on time and for respecting the SMJFL rules. It made the morning one to remember! To our rostered on volunteers, we couldn't do this without you! U9 Rockets It was a really exciting day, with most players playing their first game for Ajax. There were a few nerves early, but from quarter time onwards the team really controlled the game and dominated possession. The highlight was a goal kicked in the second quarter, set up by strong pressure and great teamwork from the midfielders and forwards. The last quarter was played with the ball camped in our forward half, but we were unable to capitalise. A few unlucky bounces resulted in points instead of goals. The defensive work in the second half was very strong, with the team only conceding one behind. Overall, it was a solid first game and the players should be very proud of themselves. U9 Sharks After a 12-month wait, Ajax U9’s sharks finally got to play their first game. They didn’t take long to find their rhythm with Jake Davis tapping the ball down to Blake Carew at will and Blake finding Benji Norton and Elcho Tenenbaum on many occasions. In the second Indy Lewski, Lior Oren and Aiden Serry from the wing kept feeding the ball into the forwards. In there, Lewis Dickman, Cody Nowoweiski, Zeke Logan pressured their way into a goal fest. In the third Aiden Lewis dominated the clearances, with the help of Hudson Weisman, Coby Pura and Ben Adler who continued his good work from earlier. Lior put on a goal kicking demonstration culminating in a snap from the pocket after marking a beautiful pass from the captain Indy. Indy joined in with a goal, while Sam Schwartz kicked one after chopping of a missed kick. In the last Carew and Davis took advantage of the good work upfield from Lewis and Zeke. Asher Weinstein meanwhile kept tacking like a machine in the forward line like he’d done all day everywhere else.
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U9 Stars After missing last season, anticipation was high among the U9 Stars players, coaches and parents, for what was a first ever match for many. After a rousing pre-match huddle the Stars burst onto the field, led out by Captain for the day, Benny Sheezel. All round teamwork and a clearly defined playing style involved quick ball movement by hand and gutsy tackling. The home team were under the pump early on, with numerous forward entries by the Stars and it wasn't long before goals were on the scoreboard from Rocky Fischl and Samuel Akkerman. Teamwork with the real winner on the day but there were also some outstanding individual efforts. Among the highlights was the marking and disposals of Akkerman across the ground, some real midfield drive led by Ness Page (who also kicked a 2nd Quarter goal) with support from Benji Bechler, Olivia Susman and Isaac Engelman, tough tackling by the newest addition to the team Oscar Want, and a couple of highlight reel moments from Miller Janover, who kicked a couple of 3rd Quarter goals. U10 Rockets Was great to have the team return to play after last year, and the team came out to play! From the first bounce Ajax gained the ascendency and were relentless keeping the opposition scoreless until that 3rd Qtr. The most pleasing part was witnessing the unselfish play between the team with passing and marking a feature of each quarter. Well done to all involved, we loved watching you play again and hope this is the start of a great season! U10 Stars In a commanding first game performance, the U10 Stars took it right up to a determined St Peters. The lessons learned over the preseason obviously stuck with our boys displaying ferocious pressure and tackling intensity across four quarters. Apart from the fantastic mix of goal kickers, it was great to see some breakout games from Gerber and Segel who set the tone for a fantastic team effort. Just like last week’s practice match, there were no passengers. It was very clear to the coaches that the U10 Stars are up for the challenge in 2021. All in all, a fantastic first up game that the boys can bank and use as a springboard for the rest of the season.
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U11 Rockets AJAX 21.14 (140) def East Sandringham 0.0 (0) Goals: Alter 8, Barnett 3, Kalbstein 3, Jackson 2, Meltzer-Burns 2, E Cohen, Dyrenfurth, Moszkowicz Best: Alter, Barnett, Dudakov, Kalbstein, Samuel As is apparent to all, it's been too long, and it was magnificent to be back! Grading Game 1 and East Sandringham was a tough challenge. We knew the scoreboard was irrelevant and rather the focus was on playing the style of football we have been training at and which we hope will stand us in good stead during the season. And we could not have asked for a better display with a wonderful brand of football on display from the 11s Rockets; desperation for the ball, a blanketing of the opposition and constant zinging of the pill around the ground as we brought our mates into the play with unselfish attitudes. We deserved the accolades that came our way. One game does not make a season, and we will no doubt face far fiercer opponents in other games. However, one game can and has revealed plenty about the approach and mindset of the players in this side, who miraculously have shown that they have been listening and learning, if we go by the execution in this game. A wonderful start and a benchmark by which we ought to be judged going forward. Challenge accepted! Go Rockets! U11 Stars East Brighton 5.4 (34) def AJAX 4.4 (28) Goals: Appel, Chrapot, Davis, Fajerman Best: Appel, Chrapot, Davis, Goldman, Lurie 600+ sleeps and away the Stars went? Facing off against a strong club in East Brighton, the boys clicked into gear early in the game and showed how excited they were to be back on the park. The jump from U9’s to U11’s without a game was significant, yet the boys showed their ability to adapt into a non-zone game and be disciplined across 4 quarters. Captains for the day, Harley Appel & Zac Fajerman both led well and hit the scoreboard for the Stars. The coaches were pleased to see some green sprouts, growth and skill improvement across the board with still some work to do. Whilst going down by 1 goal, there was plenty to like about the Stars ball movement and desire to compete. A solid effort made by all players had all supporter and families smiling from ear to ear. Well done Stars!
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U12 Comets AJAX 14.9 (93) def Brighton Beach 1.0 (6) Goals: Beebe 2, Kave 2, Kalb 2, Raleigh 2, Fogelgarn, Hyman, Klass, Oliver, Onas, Slonim Best: Beebe, Fogelgarn, Kave, Onas, Rachmani, Smorgon On a perfect day, the u12 Comets were full of confidence after a strong preseason. From the opening bounce the boys were hard at the contest, and used their superior pace and skill to dominate the first quarter. Goals flowed quickly to Hyman, Raleigh and Klass – with our mids smashing Brighton around the contest and winning the footy consistently. The backs had little to do in the first half as the Jackas forced the ball forward on every occasion. Our big men, led by Norskin, Hyams, and Beebe, proved dangerous up forward and around the ground, whilst onballers Rachmani, Kave and Onas racked up possessions. A feature of the Jackas game style is the quality passing by hand and foot, and Smorgon, Klass, Slonim and Gelfand were relishing the lack of pressure from the opposition. This led to opportunities for the forwards, with Kalb slotting two and looking the best of the small forwards. In his first game of competitive footy, Fogelgarn enjoyed a great game, booting 1 major, and setting up another with a brilliant individual passage of play. Captains for the day Oliver and Majman led from the front in a great team effort. U12 Girls AJAX 11.9 (76) def Hampton 0.6 (6) Goals: Ickowicz 5, Page 2, Jotkowitz, Katz, Rosens, Ungar Best: Fridman, Ickowicz, Jotkowitz, Lowe, Page Was great to be back playing footy at Princes Park in 2021. Entering the non-modified competition was a big unknown for the U12 girls team but playing as one was the motivation for great success. For most of the team it was their first time playing but led by captains Ickowicz and Gilboa the girls were on from the first bounce and dominated play all around the ground. What had been learnt at training was being put into effect and the handballing was clean and the kicking accurate. With a handy lead at quarter time the girls led all day and dominated across every area of the ground. With 22 players all contributing to the result, the girls ran out the game convincingly by 70 points. Special mention to Ickowicz for bagging 5 goals and leading from the front all day. It was special moment belting out the team song!
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U12 Rockets AJAX 7.5 (47) def Ashwood 4.3 (27) Goals: D Banky 2, Feldman, Gutnick, Katz, Sher, Simon Best: Mati Ainsworth, D Banky, Katz, Roff, Wynne After a long preseason the Under 12 Rockets were pumped and ready to play Ashwood in the opening game of the season. The captains, Dean Banky, playing his 50th game and Ethan Katz urged the team to focus on the 1%er’s, tackle hard and keep sharing the ball. In the first quarter the Rockets tried hard, but couldn’t convert on the scoreboard and at quarter time Ashwood lead by 2 goals. After quarter time, the Rockets hit their straps, with Mati Ainsworth dominating in the ruck, Levi Wynne picking plenty of possessions around the ground, and the captains both leading from the front. The Rockets continued to play as a unit for the rest of the game, with multiple goalkickers, all players following the team rules and putting in their best effort. A great way to start the season, the coaches and parents were all very proud. U12 Stars East Malvern 14.17 (101) def AJAX 0.0 (0) Best: Basist, Belfer, Edelstein, Kolliner, Menachem, Waters On an overcast day at Princes Park, it was great for U12 Stars to kick off their 2021 campaign. For many members of our team, this was their first ever match of football after the COVID cancellation of 2020. The stars had a tough day at the office in this grading match losing 14 goals 17 (101) to zero. Noticeable performances from Theo Edelstein with great dash and tackling prowess. Mordi Belfer and Hugo Kolliner battled manfully in the midfield, whilst Dean Waters took some timely marks in both ruck and defence. U13 Comets Brighton Beach 7.8 (50) def AJAX 4.3 (27) Goals: Franks, N Goldberg, Israel, Slutzkin Best: Bursztyn, Franks, H Goldberg, Israel, Mohr, N Rothschild It was great to see everyone back at Princes Park for the first game in a long time. The excitement was electric, the U13 Comets arrived switched on and ready to play. The Comets fought hard and never gave up, inching closer and closer all the way until the final siren. Against a classy opposition, the Comets were on the board early with a great team goal however found themselves, outrun and outworked in the first half, in what is always the toughest half of every season. The team came out firing in the third quarter, playing in front and tackling hard. The coaches were extremely pleased at the fightback in the second half right to the the final siren. Despite not achieving the desired result, the U13 Comets showed why they deserve to be in division 1, competing with one of the best teams they will face all year. Outscoring this quality opponent in the second half, was a huge positive and a momentum builder for the season ahead. We're so proud of this team. How hard they worked preseason, how they kept their heads up displaying the grit and determination ingrained in the Ajax Football club.
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U13 Jets AJAX 8.2 (50) def East Brighton 6.8 (44) Goals: Nathan 2, Parasol 2, Zalcman 2, Edelsten, Rheuben Best: Banky, Castelan, Felman, Pack, Parasol, Solomon After no football in 2020, round 1 is done and won. Coach Adam Ossip has built up a strong under 13 Jets team with many boys coming from the reigning U11 Div 4 Premiers. The match got under way with some powerful running and great team play, scoring some early goals. The second quarter saw the play of the day with Jesse Felman collecting the ball through the centre and passing it off to Benji Rostkier, then on to Dale Nathan for one of his two goals for the day. Jesse’s ball movement was an absolute high light of an open and free flowing game. Suede Solomon was a rock up back returning to the Jackas after a few years in America. Ashton Zalcman continued his fine form from the Grand final opening his season with a two goal performance. Adam Parasol saluted with two goals. Harry Pack proved too good for his often taller opponents in the Ruck. Seb Banky was also good deep in defence, while Eden Castelan was excellent on the ball. U14 Comets AJAX 12.10 (82) def East Brighton 2.2 (14) Goals: Gunn 3, Szwarc 3, Levy 2, Alford, Janover, Lakman, Rothfield Best: Gunn, Ickowicz, Janover, Katz, Marebel-Whitburn, Pitt, Rothfield Kane and I came up with 3 keys to our team this season and when we reflected on today’s game we ticked all 3. Team First mentality, bringing the effort and Showing your GRIT. Obviously we have lots of room for improvement but our ball movement today was great and everyone’s ability to know and play their role provided us with the best opportunity to get the win. Couple individual efforts we want to highlight… Jay Marabel-Whitburn’s unbelievable defensive efforts were outstanding. Hayden Katz’s chase down tackle when the game was well and truly done shows our hunger to be our best no matter what the score is. Bailey Rothfield’s composure and class going forward was exciting and Jethro and Phoenix’s selflessness epitomises the way we want to play. It was an exciting start to our 2021 journey and we’re looking forward to the coming rounds. Stick to your strengths and get around your teammates. See you Wednesday, Kane and Jonah
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U14 Girls AJAX 9.8 (62) def East Brighton 0.2 (2) Goals: Feiglin 2, Hermann 2, Zuchowski, D Cohen, R Frey, Jacobs, Best: D Cohen, Feiglin, R Frey, Hermann, Zuchowski The much anticipated season opener was a game full of Enthusiasm, Strong Efforts and Great Teamwork. Tali Feiglin was on top early, controlling the ruck contests and giving the on-balllers first use. Tahlia Hermann used her pace to create lots of forward attacks setting up an early lead. Strong tackles and constant pressure from Romy Frey and Ora Cohen allowed the girls to get on top of their opponents. Dahlia Cohen showed her experience by gaining lots of possessions all over the ground and Georgia Zuchowski’s hard running helped setup numerous goals. Co-captain Sophie Efron worked hard all game and highlighted the team’s great teamwork in her post game address. With half the girls playing their First Ever games of Football, it looks like a very exciting season ahead for the U14 girls. Phil & Tony U14 Jets AJAX 8.11 (59) def South Melbourne 4.4 (28) Goals: Lifszyc 2, Matthews 2, Degen, Felbel, Reichenberg, Simmons Best: Kagan, Lifszyc, Matthews, Naphtali, Rubinstein, Smolarski The Ajax U14 Jets began their season with a strong team win against South Melbourne at Albert Park. After a surprise pre-game speech from special-guest Wayne Carey, the attack on the ball was strong from the outset. Led by skipper Hanna Goldberg, the midfield set the tone early. The pressure was immense with Smolarski, Naphtali and Kagan all prolific, as Coby Hoppe gave us great contests in the ruck. The Jackas defence held up magnificently in the first, led by Lifszyc and Rubenstein, but probably didn’t get the scoreboard reward for their dominance at QT. The team continued their manic pressure after the first change, now starting to get some scoreboard reward. Swart was important on the inside with great assistance from Simmons across the ground, while first-gamer swingman Lifszyc provided two clever majors to give the Jackas a comfortable half-time lead. The Jets didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half, as the Jackas showed more composure attacking after half-time. Mushin was creative, while debutant Matthews lifted and was fantastic with two majors. After a late fightback from South Melbourne, Ajax ran out to a comfortable win 59-28. Coaches - Cobi Chrapot and Corey Schwartz
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U15 Comets AJAX 12.10 (82) def Ormond 8.8 (56) Goals: Fell 3, Rozenes 3, Baring 2, Chrapot 2, Navon, Nussbaum Best: Baring, Casper, Chrapot, Ni Gomo, Rozenes, Wrobel After not playing footy since 2019 the boys were really keen on starting the season strongly. The backline was under threat in the first quarter but led by Casper and Gomo stood up incredibly well conceding only one goal after multiple inside 50 entries from Ormond. The second term saw our midfield roll up their sleeves and get to work. With Mohr’s and Baring's hard running some scoreboard reward started to eventuate just before half time. After halftime Rozenes moved in to the middle and lit up the third quarter with some electric running and 3 brilliant goals. Great support from his fellow midfielders and a smart hard- working group of forwards led by Fell, Chrapot and Navon a 51-point lead was just reward for some really strong footy. Some key players were rested in the last quarter and opportunities given to others in different positions but overall a really solid and positive start to the season. Special mention to Jesse Wrobel, who missed all of the Under 13 season with injury so effectively having played very little football for 3 years but produced a dominant display as the ruckman for the entire day. U15 Jets AJAX 7.6 (48) def Prahran 6.10 (46) Goals: Lewin 2, Segal 2, Kirsh, Kranz, Weiss Best: Cohen, Gelbart, Kranz, Lewin, Schwartzshtein, Strunin Jets 4 quarter performance gets them home in a close one! The boys went out today for their first game of 2021 and did not disappoint - putting on a strong 4 quarter team performance. From the start it was evident there were no passengers with boys like Datt, Adelist, Cohen and many more going above and beyond. The focus today was based around playing hard footy and entering the second half 2 goals down the boys showed how tough they were willing to work. Strong efforts from Segal, Weiss and Lewin down forward really helped keep the scoreboard ticking over and made our efforts worth it. The silky work of our defenders to link up with our midfielders and move the ball up the ground was impressive and showed what we are capable of. Special mentions to Kranz and Strunin who took the game on all day, running through the opposition whenever they got the ball in their hands. The last 7 minutes of the game showed the team's ability to dig their heels in and deny any scoring. Overall, today was a really impressive performance by the boys and sets the bar nicely to now continue working from.
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U16 Comets East Sandringham 18.25 (133) def AJAX 3.3 (21) Goals: Becker, Faigen, Feder Best: Feder, Graham, Kister, Mitsel, Nathan, Pike Tough day in the office against quality opposition. Early on it was obvious that we had to come to play with intent, but scoreboard pressure eventually caught up with us and we dropped our heads. The 3rd quarter was especially disappointing, but after a 3rd quarter rev up we came home with renewed focus. To find our feet in this division we must focus on composing ourselves under pressure and hitting a target. U16 Jets AJAX 22.13 (145) def Beaumaris 2.3 (15) Goals: Goldfarb 11, Hershan 4, Gaspar 2, Lindell 2, Grinberg, Harrison, Miltz Best: Appel, Goldfarb, Green, Harris, Meyerowitz U16 Jets solid first game where the boys executed what we have trained for over past weeks. The climb up the mountain to a flag begins, with all players contributing and playing to their strengths. U16 Jets brand - physical and head over the ball at all times, our ball movement was key today and generated speed that the opposition couldn’t cope with. We don’t expect perfect but expect honest performances by all. That what we achieved in Round 1. Many first gamers and first goal kickers, 4 points in the bank and the Jackers song was sang loud. U17 Comets PMSMD 13.13 (91) def AJAX 7.8 (50) Goals: Light 2, Mond 2, Edwards, Jotkowitz, Rosenbaum Best: Bierenkrant, Chrapot, Light, Mond, Spicer, Nissen Good to be back after a long lay off . Disappointing result plenty of things to work on. Can’t fault the effort from all the boys keen to get back into work at Thursday night training.
AJAX Junior Football Club Weekly Wrap – Round 1, 2021 THE WRAP Match reports U18 Girls Mordialloc Braeside 9.18 (72) def AJAX 0.0 (0) Best: Alford, Amira, Belfer, Gunn, Pincus, Rozen After a long break, the U18 Girls faced up to Mordi-Braeside in a very tough Round 1 encounter at Parkdale. Our opponents scored a goal after 12 seconds, and we knew it was going to be a tough day at the office. The girls AJAX tackled their opponents really hard, improving each quarter. Our excellent skills and fitness was a factor, and the girls restricted the opponents to just 7 points in a dogged final quarter. AJAX was led superbly by captain Romi Amira who worked incredibly hard all day. Pincus took some great marks around the ground, and Alford battled hard showing her trademark aggression. Belfer and Rozen stood firm against very tough opposition, while Klooger racked up clean possessions around the ground. Gunn had to handle the biggest opposition player and did incredibly well. In all, the girls stood tall against quality opposition, and the coaches were very pleased with the endeavour.
