How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 1. Poker Through the Years More than ten centuries ago, various card games involving the basic principals of a ranked card, domino combinations, or the use of “bluffing”, evolved into one of the most popular card games played today. This game, played in various forms, has come to be called “Poker”. As with many games, the exact origins of poker are still uncertain. However, many agree that it appears to have originated from a 16th century Persian card game, As Nas. As Nas was played with 25 cards, and 5 different suits. It was played in a similar fashion to modern 5-card stud Poker, with similar hands rankings, such as three-of-a-kind. When the game reached Europeans, they called it poque or pochen. However, while poker's origins may lie in Europe and Persia, it wasn’t truly developed until it arrived in the United States. More specifically, when it arrived in New Orleans! If you’ve read our other Casino game eBooks, you may have noticed a trend with where they seem to originate. Apparently, the Big Easy loves to gamble! Poker was first widely played in New Orleans in the early 1800's. Prior to the American Civil War, poker spread quickly from New Orleans to towns throughout the Western frontier. It wasn’t only specific to Poker, as there was a general spread of gambling during this era. Most likely, because the West was largely comprised of speculators and travelers. During the Wild West period of the United States, nearly every town had a saloon with a Poker table. It was The Poker Game by Charles M Russell - 1894 also extremely popular in the Civil war, when soldiers of both armies played. Since its beginnings, Poker has taken off and never looked back! It is one of the most widely played card games, and has evolved into a number of variations, played anywhere from kitchen tables and private parties, to bars and casinos. It has also become increasingly popular as an online game. However, it is illegal to bet money on any online casino games. By the end of this eBook, you’ll not only know when to hold ‘em, fold ‘em, walk away, or run...you’ll know how to have FUN! How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 2. The Basics of 3 Card Poker The version of Poker known as 3 Card Poker is quickly becoming one of the most popular table games. Not only is it easy to learn and play...but, it’s a ton of fun!! Three Card Poker is played with a single deck of 52 cards, and is usually 2 games in 1: 1. Play/Ante game You’re playing against the dealer to see who has the highest hand. 2. Pair Plus game You are wagering on whether or not you will be dealt a pair or better. Most casinos, including the Big “M” Casino, allow you to bet on either of the games. But some casinos require you to make an Ante bet in order to bet the Pair Plus portion of the game. When you sit down to play 3 Card Poker, you will see there are three betting areas in front of each seat. The top betting circle is labeled Pair Plus where the player puts a wager on the pair plus game. Beneath that are two diamonds labeled Ante and Play for the base game. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know The game starts with the player making a wager in the Pair Plus circle and/or Ante diamond equal to the table minimum. Betting goes clockwise until each player has made their bet. Never bet out of turn. After all the players have made their bets the dealer will give each player a three card hand that is dealt by the Shuffle Master machine. The play begins with the first player to the dealer’s left and continues clockwise around the table. If you’ve placed the Ante wager, you have a choice to either fold or continue in the game by placing a Play wager, equal to the Ante. After all the players have made their decisions, the dealer turns over his or her three-card hand. The dealer’s hand needs to contain a queen or higher to “qualify”. If it does not, then all players who are still active will be paid even money for their Ante wager and their bet on Play will be returned to them. However, if the dealer does have a queen or higher, then each player compares their hand to the dealer’s. If your hand beats the dealer, you will be paid even money for your Ante AND Play bets. If the dealer’s hand beats yours, then you will lose both bets. If there is a tie, then the player wins the hand. The Hand Rankings of Three Card Poker are as follows: Straight Flush - Three cards of the same suit in sequence (i.e. 6-7-8 of clubs). Three of a Kind - Three cards of equal rank. Straight - Three cards in sequence of mixed suits. Flush - Three cards of the same suit. Pair - Two cards of equal rank. High Card - The highest card in your hand. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 3. Poker Chips Many Poker games involve using chips as currency. When you’re asked to ante up, it’s important to know how much you’re putting in. Below are the standard amounts that are assigned to each chip color. The five most common colors and their values are: White, $1 Red, $5 Blue, $10 Green, $25 Black, $100 Chips are used in place of money in casinos for several reasons: They are more convenient to use than currency. They make theft and counterfeiting more difficult. They are easier to count in stacks compared to paper currency when used on a table because of the uniform size, regularity, and coloring patterns of stacks of chips versus currency The “Pit Boss” or security can quickly verify the amount being paid, reducing the chance that a dealer might incorrectly pay a customer. The uniform weight of the casino's official tokens allows them to weigh large stacks or piles of chips rather than counting them. However, most casinos use counting aids such as chip trays for this purpose. It is also observed that consumers tend to gamble or spend more freely with replacement currencies than with cash. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 4. Poker Variations Three-card Poker is played on the Big “M” Casino, and is one of the more popular versions of Poker played in many casinos today. Here are some other popular versions of the game, in case you get invited over to a friend’s house for Poker Night. Texas Hold ‘Em : 1. Players will place out blinds and antes (this is called posting). 2. Each player is dealt two private cards face down. 3. There is a round of betting, starting with the player to the left of the blinds. Players can call, raise, or fold. 4. The betting round ends & dealer discards the top card of the deck (a “burn card”). 5. Dealer flips next three cards face up on table (“the flop”). These are communal cards that anyone can use in combination with their two pocket cards to form a poker hand. 6. Another round of betting, after which dealer burns a card and places a final card face up on table (called “the river”). Players can now use any of the five cards on table or two cards in their pocket to form a five card poker hand. 7. One final round of betting, then you have “the showdown”. 8. This begins with the player to the left of the last player to call. Players use a combination of their pocket cards and the community cards to form a 5-Card hand. Player who shows the best hand wins! 3 or 5 Card Draw: 1. Each player places ante into the pot 2. Deal each player three or five cards. Player to the dealer's left bets or passes 3. Gather the cards if every player passes. Ante again, and have the player to the dealer's left deal a fresh hand. 4. Subsequent players either call, raise or fold after a player opens a hand by betting. 5. Once everyone has either bet or folded, each remaining player has the option to exchange some cards for an equal number from the top of the deck. 6. Start another round of betting after every player in the hand has either exchanged his cards or stayed. 7. The players who have not folded show their hands following the betting round. 8. The player with the highest hand takes all the poker chips that are in the pot. 7-card Stud or 5-Card Stud (Played with 3 to 5 players) 1. Initial deal is two cards down and one card up to each player. 2. First betting round starts with the highest hand showing or the high card. 3. Another card is dealt up and another betting round. This is repeated until there are four cards face up. 4. A final card is dealt down and a final betting round held. 5. The ranking of the hands are the same as regular poker except to take the five best cards out of the ones you are dealt. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 5. Poker Face The term Poker Face is defined as A face lacking any interpretable expression, as that of an expert Poker player. Maintaining your Poker face is one of the most important keys to success in a Poker game. Not only must you avoid giving anything away to your opponents, but a good Poker player is also a skilled bluffer, and able to mislead opponents into making false assumptions. Here are tips for maintaining a Poker face: It’s a full body effort. In order to maintain an effective Poker face, you must be aware of your whole body. Having a serious face shows that you know what you’re doing. But, if you have a nervous habit of tapping your foot, turning in your chair, adjusting your jewelry, tapping your Poker chips, biting your nails, or any other number of fidgety actions, this can also be an indicator to other players that you are nervous. Watch your face in the mirror. People don’t realize how their facial expressions may appear to others, so this can make it rather challenging to keep a Poker face. So, stand in front of a mirror and think about different scenarios that cause various emotions, then watch your expression. Better yet, use a video camera to record yourself playing a practice game of Poker with friends and observe your expressions carefully. This will help you control your facial muscles when they naturally want to react to various emotions during the game. Your eyes are windows into your soul. Have you ever noticed that a person’s eyes “light up” when they’re happy? Their eyes also darken when they are angry, widen when they are frightened, and tear up when they’re sad. Even if your facial expressions are stoic, your eyes will naturally dilate when you are happy or excited. This is very hard, if not impossible, to control. If you have light eyes, this can be detected by your opponents. That’s why so many Poker players wear dark sunglasses. You should too. Keep your hands on your cards. Don’t put your hands anywhere near your face during the game. Hand signals are often very subtle, but they can give away your Poker face without you realizing a thing. Hands on or near your face can send a thousand messages to experienced Poker players, so try to keep them firmly on your cards. Remain calm. Control your body movements, and try to act the same for every hand... unless of course you are intentionally trying to look nervous to fool your opponents. Stick with your Poker face. Sometimes lack of expression or emotion can be very difficult. One way to develop an effective control of your facial expressions, without surrendering all expression, is to pick an emotion or expression at the beginning of the game and stick with it. For example, you may choose to be happy all evening, so you’re all smiles...regardless of your hand. Just keep thinking happy thoughts all night to help you stick with it. Or, you may decide to be sullen and glum for the evening. Think about sad songs or other things that will keep up this emotion, even if you have the winning hand. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 6. Poker Etiquette You may be new to Poker, but no one else has to know that. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can sit at the table with all the confidence of the card sharks. However, as with most casino games, there are some basic, unspoken rules called table etiquette, that you should abide by. Most of these rules are concerned with the fairness of the game, player safety, and just maintaining a friendly atmosphere. To play poker properly (try saying that 10 times fast!), make sure you know the House Rules. Each casino may have its own set of house rules. It’s best to check them upon arrival so that you can ensure you’re playing by the rules. Some of these may include: Betting always goes clockwise. Never bet out of turn. Nothing is allowed on the poker table except the cards, your drink, and chips. Do not bend, dent, or mark the cards in any way. Do not touch another players cards. Play only one table at a time (“One player, one hand”). Be kind & respectful to the dealer and other players. Obviously, one of the biggest sins in Poker etiquette is cheating. This is something every Poker player and Casino takes very seriously. There may be many forms of cheating, but they usually fall into 4 basic categories: Collusion - This requires two or more players scheming together to beat the other players. This may be difficult to catch. Mechanics - This often involves the dealer and is done through a sleight of hand. For example, false shuffling or dealing from the bottom of the deck. Casino dealers are well monitored so you typically do not have to worry about this at most Casinos. Imported Chips - This is easily avoided as most casinos have custom made chips. However, if you’re playing at home, it could be an issue. Marked Cards - This is executed by marking cards prior to their use in a game, which can include a tear or a bend in a card. Casinos use a new deck each time to avoid this. Some cheaters may use cards marked by invisible ink that is only visible through special glasses. Of course, one of the most common forms of cheating is trying to steal a quick peek at another players cards. Clearly, ANY form of cheating goes against Poker etiquette and can cause you to be blacklisted or face serious penalties. Also, make sure you are aware of others potentially trying to cheat and always keep your guard up! Want to try another table game besides Poker? How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 7. Poker Tournaments Once you’ve become a card shark, you may want to consider entering a Poker tournament. A Poker tournament, as the name suggests, is a tournament in which players compete for a prize by playing Poker. It can consist of as little as 2 people playing on a single table (called “Heads up” tournament), to tens of thousands of people playing on thousands of tables. The winner of a Poker tournament is the person who has won every poker chip in the game. The other players are given awards based on their order of elimination. In a tournament, the players chips cannot be cashed out for money, they only determine the player’s placing. Here’s how it works: You enter a poker tournament by paying a fixed buy in and are given a pre-determined amount of poker chips. Again, these chips have no cash value. Some tournaments may offer the option of purchasing more chips, called re-buy or buy-back. For most tournaments, they will keep an even number of players at each table by moving players, either by switching one player or (as the field shrinks) taking an entire table out of play and distributing its players amongst the remaining tables. In a shoot out tournament, they let the tables dwindle down as players are eliminated and the last player at a table will then move on to the next round. The prizes for a Poker tournament will vary depending on the tournament. However, the prize is usually awarded in one of two ways: Fixed Each place corresponds to a certain payoff. For example, a ten-person, $20 buy-in tournament might award $100 for 1st place, $60 for 2nd place, and $40 for 3rd. Proportional Payouts are determined on a percentage-based scale, based on the number of participants. These scales will usually see the top three players winning more than the rest of the paid players combined. Learn more by visiting www.BigMCasino.com/fort-myers-beach or by calling (888) 373-3521. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 8. Poker Odds The odds of your Poker game depend on the type you are playing. Since we offer 3-Card Poker at The Big “M”, we’re going to focus on those odds today. So, before you dive into the Poker odds, you may want to refresh yourself with the rules, and re-read Tip 2: The Basics of 3 Card Poker. Now that you’re comfortable with the basics, let’s talk about your odds for each hand, based on your bet. 3- Card poker is a fairly simple game, knowing the odds is not essential. However, it can be good to know. Since 3-Card Poker consists of two games in one, (you can bet on either game or both), the odds really vary based on the type of bet that you make. For a Pair Plus bet, you will be paid entirely based on the poker value of your hand. The probabilities are as follows: Hand Combinations Probability Straight Flush 48 0.002172 3 of a Kind 52 0.002353 Straight 720 0.032579 Flush 1096 0.049593 Pair 3744 0.169412 Ace High or Less 16440 0.743891 Learn more by visiting www.BigMCasino.com/fort-myers-beach or by calling (888) 373-3521. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 9. Poker Dealer So, what’s the deal with the Dealer? A Poker Dealer has an important role, aside from the obvious “dealing” of the cards. He or she must also keep track of the bets and help to control the tempo of the game. A good dealer keeps things moving and diplomatically encourages action from slower players. A Poker Dealer must be very proficient in shuffling & dealing. However, it’s not as simple as it looks! Here are the correct methods: Shuffling To shuffle the cards, the dealer follows a specific sequence that’s typically defined by the casino: 1. Spread all cards out on the table and push them around randomly. (This is called scrambling or washing the cards.) 2. Collect the cards and square them into a deck. At this point a typical shuffling sequence might be: “riffle, riffle, box, riffle”. Professional dealers always keep both halves of the deck very low to the table while shuffling. 3. Place one of the cut cards on the table then cut the deck onto the card. 4. The cut card is held on the bottom of the deck for the entire hand, to keep the bottom card from being exposed. Dealing In American-style dealing, the deck is held in one hand. The Dealer pinches the front- right corner of the top card between the other thumb and index finger. The card is then thrown, or pitched to the player. To keep your moves smooth and seamless as a Dealer, you must throw the card using a wrist extending motion. This positioning of the throwing wrist is critical, since the cards must be kept low and level with the table surface. This is done so that players at the table can’t see the undersides of the cards. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 10. Poker Strategy When it comes to Three Card Poker, as we mentioned, there are 2 games being played. The Pair Plus game is purely a game of chance. You simply compare your hand to the winning combination on the payout table and pray for luck. There is no strategy of drawing additional cards or raising your bet involved. However, with the Ante and Play game, you are playing against the dealer. This allows you to work a little strategy into your game, potentially increasing your odds! Here are some easy strategies to remember: If you have a winning poker hand, such as a pair or three of a kind, a flush, or a straight, you should definitely play because your odds of winning Ante and Play are very high. If you do not have a winning poker hand, you should play anyway if you have a hand of Queen-6-4 or better. So, what constitutes a a Queen-6-4 or better? Poker hands are ranked according to the highest card. So, in 3 Card Poker, the second card, and then the third, are examined only to break a tie. For example, a King-5-3 would beat a Queen-6-4 based on the high card; there is no need to look further. If both high cards are the same, such as a Queen-7-2 and Queen-6-4, the Queen-7-2 would win. Here, the high cards tie, and the second card breaks the tie, so there is no need to look at the third card. Opting to play with a Queen-6-4 or better has been mathematically proven to be the optimal three-card poker strategy, which will give you the best chance to win 3-card poker consistently. How to Play Three Card Poker - Everything You Need to Know 11. Glossary of Poker Terms Ante This is indicated by a diamond on the 3 Card Poker table. It is the bet you must place to receive your cards and start the game. Bluff In 3 Card Poker this means you choose to stay in on a hand when you should fold. In other forms of poker, where you are playing against other players, this term refers to making other players think that you have a better hand than you actually hold. Even Money The house pays the player the same amount of money that they bet. In 3 Card Poker, all bets are even money bets. Fold To drop out of play. Pair Plus This bet is indicated by a circle on the card table, but is completely independent of the Ante/ Play bet. A Pair Plus bet is placed on a bet of whether the 3 cards dealt to the player contain a pair. Play Indicated by a diamond on the poker table, the Play bet must be equal to the Ante bet and is played against the dealer's hand. It is placed after the player has received his cards, but before he has seen the dealer’s cards. Push A tie between the player and the dealer. Nothing is paid out.
