The William Hill St Leger Stakes (Group 1) The William Hill St Leger holds a special place in history as the world’s oldest Classic. Named after local sportsman Anthony St Leger, who lived at Park Hill near Doncaster, and run over a distance in excess of a mile and three quarters, the great race dates back to 1776 and is considered to be the ultimate test of a three-year-old thoroughbred. Indeed, it has been graced by some of racing’s greatest champions through the centuries. WEST AUSTRALIAN was one of the most celebrated winners of the 19th century. Trained in Malton, North Yorkshire by John Scott, he was the first horse to complete the Triple Crown –victories in the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger –when galloping to glory in 1853. That feat was repeated by the brilliant Ormonde while legendary thoroughbreds Sceptre, Pretty Polly and Hyperion also clinched the Classic. In more modern times, LESTER PIGGOTT won the St Leger eight times during an unparalleled career that brought him a record 30 Classics, but his greatest St Leger winner was undoubtedly the Vincent O'Brien-trained NIJINSKY, who drew a huge crowd to Doncaster in 1970 when overcoming a setback to become the last colt to complete the Triple Crown. Seven years later a filly named DUNFERMLINE etched her name in the record books by securing one of the most popular St Leger victories of all time. Ridden by Willie Carson, she rounded off her owner The Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in style, beating subsequent dual Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Alleged in a nail-biting finish. In 1985, OH SO SHARP completed the fillies’ Triple Crown, adding the St Leger to her triumphs in the 1,000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks. Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, she was ridden by American ace Steve Cauthen in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed. Indeed, it was her victory on Town Moor that truly heralded the arrival of the Maktoum family as a major force in world racing. REFERENCE POINT in 1987 was the most recent Derby winner to follow up in the St Leger, again for Sir Henry and Cauthen. Until 2008, the St Leger was the only Classic to have eluded nine-time champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute who finally set the record straight when CONDUIT claimed the glory under Frankie Dettori. Fellow Newmarket trainer JOHN GOSDEN has enjoyed even greater success in the St Leger since the racecourse underwent its redevelopment in 2007. Lucarno became the first horse to gallop to gloryin front of the brand-new grandstand under Jimmy Fortune, before Arctic Cosmos in 2010 and Masked Marvel in 2011 supplemented Gosden’s 1996 triumph with Sheikh Mohammed’s Shantou. Racing’s powerful rivals Godolphin and Coolmore have dominated the Classic in more recent times. Outsider ENCKE was the sixth horse to triumph for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation when he denied odds-on favourite Camelot’s Triple Crown bid in 2012, while LEADING LIGHT became Aidan O’Brien’s fourth St Leger winner in 2013. History was made 2016, when Laura Mongan became the first woman to train a winner of the St Leger. The Epsom based trainer sent out HARBOUR LAW to win the race at 22/1, ridden by George Baker. Considered an outsider, Harbour Law endeavoured after the heavily backed favourite, Idaho, trained by Aidan O’Brien unseated his rider. Aidan O’Brien was once again victorious in the 2017 renewal, with Coolmoore’s Irish Derby winner CAPRI. The victory was a first St Leger for jockey Ryan Moore, and contributed towards O’Brien’s record-breaking haul of 28 Group 1 victories that year. The race proved to be one of the strongest in recent years with subsequent King George second CRYSTAL OCEAN, Ascot Gold Cup winner STRADIVARIUS and Melbourne Cup winner REKINDLING in behind Capri. 3
The St Leger Stakes Trophy The St Leger Stakes Trophy The permanent St Leger Stakes Trophy was designed by Chris Knight, Sarah Denny and Owen Waterhouse of Sheffield Hallam University to celebrate the redevelopment of Doncaster Racecourse in 2007. The overall concept behind the St. Leger Stakes Trophy was to produce a classic yet modern piece of silverware that had the ability to be re-designed or reinvigorated each year. Hand wrought and weighing in at approximately 10KG, the solid silver trophy is composed of a large rose water dish with a central rose bowl. The large dish is the permanent trophy of the St.Leger Stakes whilst the central, removable, rose bowl is the ‘gift’ to the winner of the race. Each year a new contemporary designer silversmith will be commissioned to design a new centre, thus re-interpreting and invigorating the main trophy through the coming years. 2018 William Hill St Leger Stakes Winners Centre – Designed by Charlotte Tollyfield Charlotte Tollyfield is an award-winning contemporary silversmith and metalworker whose practice has been based in the heart of Sheffield for the last 10 years. She exhibits her work nationally, and has regularly attended the prestigious Goldsmiths’ Fair and Collect exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery. Charlotte’s work is represented in several of Sheffield city’s collections including Sheffield Museums Trust, the Sheffield Assay Office and the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. For this year’s piece, Charlotte took inspiration from Doncaster’s historic links to the aeronautical industry. In particular, the racecourse’s history of hosting one of the largest air shows in the country including the first ever air show to take place in Britain in 1909. With 2018 also marking the 100th anniversary of the RAF, and all the celebrations that has inspired, it seemed a fitting theme. Said Charlotte: “It occurred to me that there are many comparisons between a racing horse and an aeroplane in flight. The consideration of aerodynamics, the apparent fluidity of movement and the thrill of speed, all combined to give each an alluring grace and elegance. This is what I have tried to capture in my design. “It is a huge privilege, and brings a great sense of achievement to be involved with a project like this. Knowing that the trophy is the centre point to the whole William Hill St. Leger festival, and the prize that everyone is racing for, is quite overwhelming. The fact that someone is going to take that part of it which I have made, home, and that to them it will be a lasting reminder of such a big day, is a great honour indeed.” 4

Clipper Logistics Leger Legends Classified Stakes (0-70) The Clipper Logistics Leger Legends Classified Stakes (3.50pm, Wednesday, September 13) is run for the ninth time, having been won by former St Leger winning jockey, Joseph O’Brien on Phosphorescence in 2016 and Brian Harding on Off Art in 2018 It is run under the Rules of Racing, unlike almost all other charity races. The Doncaster Cup Stakes (Group 2) Doncaster Cup Memories The DONCASTER CUP is the oldest continuously run race in Britain and today celebrates its 252nd anniversary. First staged in the town in 1766, some 10 years before the inaugural running of the world’s oldest Classic the St Leger, the Group Two feature today forms part of the Quipco British Champions’ Series and is the final leg of the stayers’ triple crown. Originally called the Doncaster Gold Cup and run over four miles, the race took place at nearby Cantley Common until moving to Town Moor in 1776. Today the best staying thoroughbreds in Britain and Ireland compete for the prestigious crown over a demanding two and a quarter miles. The most successful horse was BEESWING, who won the Doncaster Cup four times in the 1800s, while the winning-most jockey was Joe Mercer who took his tally to eight with back-to-back triumphs on the great Le Moss. Cecil Boyd-Rochfort made the race his own with seven wins between 1934 and 1963, a record equalled only by his stepson, the late SIR HENRY CECIL, who warmed crowds with the likes of Buckskin, Le Moss and Ardross. However, the most celebrated winner in the modern era is Mark Johnston’s popular chestnut DOUBLE TRIGGER, whose victory in 1995 saw him complete the stayers’ triple crown –the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and, of course, the Doncaster Cup. Legends of the 19th Century BEESWING was quite simply one of the greatest race mares of all time, winning the Doncaster Cup a record four times as well as galloping to glory in the Ascot Gold Cup, six Newcastle Cups, three Craven Stakes and two Queen’s Plates. A descendant of the great Eclipse, Beeswing was trained by James Watson and later Bob Johnson, and owned by William Orde. Remarkably, she won 51 of her 57 completed races and never finished worse than second. Following her fourth Doncaster Cup win in 1842, the year of her Ascot Gold Cup triumph, Beeswing was retired to stud and produced four top class horses including 2,000 Guineas winner Nunnykirk. Such was her reputation as a racehorse that a Scottish village was named after her. Bought for the cheap price of 600 guineas by the 1st Marquess of Westminster on the recommendation of his stud groom, TOUCHSTONE won back-to-back Doncaster Gold Cups in the 1830s for trainer John Scott before enjoying a successful second career as a stallion. Records suggest he was a “peculiar” horse, yet he still won 15 races, defeating the wonder mare Beeswing in the 1835 Town Moor spectacle. He was also successful in a St Leger, an Ascot Gold Cup and a Dee Stakes. VOLTIGEUR’S victory in the 1850 Doncaster Cup is legendary. He was the only colt to take on Derby and St Leger winner The Flying Dutchman, who was unbeaten in 13 starts, and sprung a surprise by beating the four-year-oldchampion by half a length in the hands of regular rider Job Marson. 21
Only two days earlier, the John Scott-trained Voltigeur had dead-heated in the St Leger with Russborough but following heated disputes, the race was re-run later in the afternoon. Voltigeur had to show great courage but won cleverly by half a length. Voltigeur also won the Epsom Derby in 1850 and enjoyed success as a stallion. On his death in 1874, the Sheffield Telegraph described him as “the pride of the Yorkshire sportsman” and when York introduced a new St Leger trial in 1950 they duly named it the Great Voltigeur Stakes in his honour. Heroes of the Modern Era Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil and owned by Italian lawyer Carlo d’Alessio, LE MOSS had the distinction of winning the stayers’ triple crown –the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup –two years in succession. Partnered to both Doncaster victories by the great Joe Mercer, Le Moss clashed three times with his classy, younger rival Ardross in the three Cup races in 1980, scoring by a neck on Town Moor. As a three-year-old he finished second to Julio Mariner in the 1978 St Leger after a slow start, despite being strongly fancied to land the world’s oldest Classic. DOUBLE TRIGGER is without doubt the most celebrated Doncaster Cup winner of the modern era, taking the race three times. He won 12 Group races in a distinguished career, the highlight being his stayers’ triple crown in 1995 –victory in the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and, of course, the Doncaster Cup. Trained in Middleham, North Yorkshire, by Mark Johnston, and owned by Ron Huggins, ‘Trigger’ finished third in the St Leger before winning the Doncaster Cup for Jason Weaver in 1995 and Frankie Dettori in 1996. The flashy chestnut’s third Doncaster Cup success in 1998 prompted emotional scenes on Town Moor. A true warrior, the imposing chestnut gelding PERSIAN PUNCH won the hearts of racing fans for his exploits in the top staying races in the new millennium, adding the 2003 DoncasterCup to his two victories in the Goodwood Cup and three in the Jockey Club Cup. He twice won the prestigious Cartier Award for Top Stayer. Winner of 20 races, he shared the record for 13 European Pattern successes with the likes of Ardross and Brigadier Gerard, and had taken his career earnings over the £1 million mark when he collapsed and died after the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in 2004. A life size bronze statue stands in his honour at Newmarket Racecourse. There could never have been a more timely winner of the Doncaster Cup than TIMES UP in 2012, when the appropriately named gelding brought the curtain down on trainer John Dunlop’s illustrious career. But emotions ran high again 12 months later when he followed up for John’s son Ed Dunlop. Carrying the green and black colours of Mrs Jane Stewart-Brown and Mrs Michael Meacock, Times Up proved just too good for James Fanshawe’s High Jinx in both renewals –a horse he also got the better of in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York in 2012. The Doncaster Cup continued to enthral in 2014, as Her Majesty The Queen’s ESTIMATE, ridden by Ryan Moore, justified favouritism to add the race to his Ascot Gold Cup won the season before. The race celebrated it’s 250th anniversary in 2016, when David Simcock’s SHEIKHZAYEDROAD was victorious, ridden by Martin Harley. 22
