We have all experienced so much hardship over the past year and a half and are excited to socialize. Our committees are actively preparing for some great events and we can’t wait to see everyone. SYC Summer Sailing Programs 2021 By Rear Commodore, Dr. Robert Superko Stillwater Yacht Club has strengthened and expanded our Youth Sailing Program with progressive classes designed to teach our students from entry level Water Sports to Learn-To-Sail classes. Their next steps will take them through Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Racing classes. These classes will teach our kids how to safely and comfortably operate their boats and learn to love the sport of sailing. In addition, the program will be led by carefully hand-picked Coaches and Instructors…an unbeatable combination! SYC is planning to partner with Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club to run the Racing Classes. This new and exciting racing addition to our program will split the class locations and give students the advantage of learning to sail both in Carmel & Monterey Bay, two different racing/ sailing situations. Here are the four exciting programs that are planned. Sign up for one or more! Registration opens April 15. Visit SYCPB.org for more information. Boat Launch to Beach Broach I certainly couldn't have done this alone, and hadn't thought this out, but the large and willing group put Teg By William Broenkow in the water without a scratch. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories Professor of Physical Oceanography (Retired) Retirement requires a project. In 2003, I decided to build a boat. Not from scratch, but a stitch-and-glue kit made in Wales. It arrived from Liverpool via the Great Lakes and Fed Ex the month after I retired. The kit was fun to build, but disappointingly easy. I finished it well before Christmas. This was a bit of a let-down: it didn't take much of my retirement to build Teg (Welsh for “beautiful”). But I had grand plans for the little 16-foot rowboat with a sail. My goal was to revisit Lake Nitinat, a fjord on Vancouver Island, where I had done my graduate work in oceanography. I would take my wife and my dog along. The launch went fairly easily. We walked the boat into the negligible surf. Somehow, two of us clambered aboard and rowed away. We made several launches with various crews. Not everyone wanted the thrill. After each sojourn the boat was brought ashore, turned around, and headed seaward again. With different crews, over the course of an hour or so, we more or less learned to handle the boat during four or five 10- minute “expeditions”. By the time of the last run, the still-small surf had grown a bit. Now, everyone has seen in pirate movies when longboats come ashore and a crewman jumps out of the stern holding it seaward to First, though, we needed a proper launch party. What avoid broaching. Obviously, I didn't understand the better place than the calm waters of Stillwater Cove? I principle. No one was injured when the stern swung invited a small group of friends for the grand affair. No around, the boat careened, and filled with water. Leland champagne bottle christened the fragile 75-pound, 3/16- and I were thoroughly soaked. Now it was apparent why inch plywood hull. Among the group were Alan and Sheila Ed wore waders. Ed held the bow as we broached. I'm Baldridge (librarians at Hopkins and Moss Landing Marine sure he prevented a sorrier mess. To this day I still Labs). Sheila made a cake to cap the celebration. Marlene apologize to him for not getting a ride. Greg Martin brought the wine. Importantly, Leland Lewis, a documented the disaster to preserve the event for master mariner with years of experience on Victory posterity. Every boat house should post such a picture. I Ships during WWII, an author of several piloting books preached several maxims while teaching computer for the west coast and a highly seasoned yachtsman, was programming: the most important is “know what you there to keep me out of trouble. My friend, fellow golfer are doing.” and oceanographer, Ed Thornton, showed up curiously wearing hip boots. Mick McMahan and wife Nicky, with Not sure I did. vast boating experience, joined us. At this time Mick was building the 'Nicky Clipper', a forty-foot Maine lobster boat. Long-time MLML friends Jim and Bette Nybakken, and Greg Cailliet, were there but declined a ride. No doubt that I had sufficient back-up. With all of this help, what could go wrong? Four of us carried the boat down the concrete steps just behind the Beach and Tennis Club. 6
SYC Boat Roster By Secretary Joan Wood It is customary at most yacht clubs to keep a current roster of member-owned boats. It is also true that most yacht club facilities provide slips or other year-round berthing accommodations. However, SYC is unique in many ways, and one of them is the beauty of our surroundings. We have the luxury of an unobstructed view of the Cove and Carmel Bay beyond. Boat owners keep their boats in other locations but have the availability of moorings in the Cove during the sailing season. We have a beautiful pier and hoist for the owners of smaller boats to launch for a day sail or to participate in regattas. Reading our SYC Boat Roster is the travel experience we are not currently able to enjoy due to the pandemic. The diversified fleet is berthed both locally and abroad and the variety of yachts is a joy to visualize. Thanks to Webmaster Bon Abercrombie and Parker Wood (SC) for their diligence in creating the format and user-friendly sign-up form. Thanks, also, to SYC members who contributed yacht information. If you would like to have your boat added to the roster, there is an online form at the Stillwater website here for your convenience. 7

I believe we need to appreciate the Pebble Beach Company in that they provide us a great club house which helps us maintain a World Class Yacht Club status. A great Commodore once said to me, the Stillwater Yacht Club should be a fun environment, even in the board room. I want to thank each one of you for maintaining the Club’s image and reputation. Andre Agassi once said that image is everything; I agree with that, but there is more. A structure is only as strong as its foundation. We, as Directors, are the Club’s foundation. We need to honor and respect each other, even when we don’t agree on certain topics. We need to carry on the legacy of those board members who were before us that built this great Club. Many generations from now, our Yacht Club Members and Directors will look back and be thankful for all of the hard work you provided to make Stillwater Yacht Club one of the best Clubs in the world. Remember, we entertained the America’s Cup Team here at our club house in the past. I am looking forward to the great memories we will create in the future. May God have his Blessings upon us and give us direction. Thank you. 8
