Dear Siblings in Christ, The verdict is now in. Derek Chauvin was found guilty of three counts in the murder of George Floyd. That a conviction of a police officer in the wrongful death of a black man has finally come to pass and perhaps even set precedent brings relief and sense of justice for many. But for others, there is no joy. A verdict such as this is long overdue. An innocent man is still dead. Families and loved ones still grieve. Many still live in fear of the police. Yes, the man who killed him is being held responsible for this particular death, but what about all the others? What about all the other young black men and women who have been needlessly killed at the hands of police? I must say, when I heard the news, I felt conflicted. On the one hand, I was glad Mr. Chauvin will be held accountable for what he did. But on the other hand, this conviction is only one among so many that have not happened, and likely never will. Where is justice for all those families? For Trayvon Martin and Breonna Taylor? For Daunte Wright and Sandra Bland? And what about all the others, the now hundreds of names that are read and remembered at BLM protests? Where is the justice for them? Where is reconciliation for these communities? How do they put their lives back together now that their loved ones are dead and never coming home? Such thoughts make my heart ache. But I am conflicted in other ways, too. We live in a culture that loves violence. We are entertained by it in video games and movies. We glorify it by having violence as the leading story in the news simply because stories like that lead to higher ratings. Perhaps even more troubling, we still buy into the Old Testament theology of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” We forget that Jesus has told us this way of thinking is not the Way of the Cross. In Matthew 5:38-42, Jesus says quite plainly: You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. We have forgotten that the “eye for an eye” theology of the Hebrew Scriptures was never meant to be “prescriptive” (this is what you should do) but rather it was intended to be “descriptive” (let the punishment be proportionate to the crime). If we truly lived by this law, most of the world would be blind and toothless! We forget that Jesus came among us to show us there is a better way. First of all, he wants us to learn to see the humanity in one another. To see each other for what we are: children of God! He wants us to learn and remember that whether black, brown, Asian, white, or purple with pink polka dots, we are all human, living beings that are worthy of love, life, respect, and liberty. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done, these things always apply. They are all part of human dignity. And perhaps even more importantly, a person is always and forever a child of God. Even someone like Derek Chauvin is a child of God. Even someone who has committed terrible sins is not beyond the reach of God’s grace. If we say otherwise, then we are also saying that there is something more powerful than the love of God, and THAT is simply false. God is God. God is love. God is all powerful and all mighty. There is nothing that is more powerful than God. Period. Full stop. 2
Now that is not to say there are not consequences to our choices. Derek Chauvin killed a man and he must be held accountable. We will find out what that will look like in about 8 weeks. But perhaps in time, he will come to see why what he did was wrong and have a change of heart. God is good at that. God is good at changing human hearts, and God is very good at miracles – it is what God does best! If God can raise Jesus from the dead, God can also change a hateful heart. Second, we see how powerful a word of forgiveness can be. When Jesus is hanging on the cross, he could have done any number of things to change that outcome. He could have called upon the angels to come set him free. He could have rained down fire from heaven upon those who had tortured him. But he didn’t do any of that. Instead, he asked God to forgive those men, because they honestly did not realize they were crucifying the Son of the Living God. Jesus came among us to show us how to forgive. Forgiveness is one of the hardest things we will ever give away to anyone, especially to someone who is not sorry for what they have done, or to someone whom we feel does not deserve to be forgiven. There are 3 issues with that way of thinking: 1) it again implies some- thing is more powerful than the love of God, 2) it sets us up as “judge and jury” over the sins of another, and 3) if we fail to forgive, we are the ones who end up being shackled to the issue, not the person who committed the sin. We live in very challenging times, times that are sadly a lot of our own making. As I said before, there are consequences to our choices, and some of our troubles today are the results of decades of historically bad choices. Eventually, as it is said, “all chickens come home to roost.” But we can have hope in our faith that violence does not get the last word on our lives. Jesus does, the One who was and is The Word (logos) who became flesh and lived among us. He lived, he loved, he taught, he died, and he rose again to help us better understand who God is and what God is all about: love. Pure, unde- served, all-encompassing love. May we learn to live this love, just as Jesus did. Walking with you along The Way, Pastor Kim PSALM STUDY Join us on Wednesday nights as we study the Psalms. Crisis in the Middle East The situation: Instability in several Middle Eastern countries has caused humanitarian crises throughout the region: In Syria, the ongoing civil war has pushed millions of people into poverty and caused rampant inflation. Over 11 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance, and many have fled to neighboring countries. In Iraq, the conflict with ISIL has internally displaced more than 1.4 million Iraqis, many of whom live in refugee camps. In addition, 253,000 Syrian refugees have settled in Iraq. Jordan hosts refugees from many countries, the largest group being over 660,000 Syrian refugees. Eighty-six percent of these refugees live below the poverty line. Lebanon is three years into an economic crisis, its recession only worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, an influx of Syrian refugees, the Beirut port explosion and political turmoil. Needs throughout these countries include food and nonfood items, water facilities, livelihood opportunities, and health and psychosocial support. In addition to the existing crises in these countries, COVID-19 has exacerbated the humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable populations. Our response: Lutheran Disaster Response is supporting ACT Alliance appeals for Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Implementing partners — such as the Lutheran World Federation, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, and the Middle East Council of Churches with its Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees — will provide humanitarian support for people affected by the ongoing conflicts. The responses will develop the resilience of refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, and host communities through the improvement of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, vocational training, cash assistance and education opportunities. What you can do: Pray Please pray for people who have been affected by Middle East crises. May God's healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need. Give Your gifts designated for “Middle East Crisis” will be used entirely (100%) to provide long-lasting support for those whose lives have been impacted by crises in the Middle East. IGHL COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS APRIL 2021 1. Council discussed allowing groups to serve food. Council recommended Charlotte Burke consult with the Food Team at the Health Department and establish some guidelines for us. These guidelines will be made available to the congregation as soon as they are ready. 2. Bathrooms in the hallway (next to the coffee bar) are now available for congregational use on Sundays. Please continue to wear your mask when in the building and sanitize your hands when finished. 3. 1st Quarter Food Pantry Stats: 376 families were served, or 1116 boxes of food were sent out. 2109 pounds of food were donated, including from St. Andrew’s. 13 people volunteer each week to box and sort the food, or 156 volunteers over 3 months. This does not count Tom & Lynn Ochsner’s volunteer hours, nor does it include the food runners from area churches. 4. Due to an uptick of traffic in the parking lot, as well as shenanigans and vandalism by local youth, Council is exploring installing security cameras in the west parking lot. Signs for camera surveillance will be installed in the meantime. 5. We have received a bid for $2100.00 to fix the leaks in the flat part of the roof. 6. Pastor Kim has been elected Dean of the Lincoln Area Mission Cluster. 7 Regular giving in March was $7,411.07 over the budget estimate. Year to date regular giving is over the budget estimate by $8,202.05. Special giving for March was $3,209.04. 8. Checking Balance Starting $11,582.86 and Ending $11,535.16. Savings balance starting $45,406.59 and ending $45,406.98. Greg transferred $6,000.00 from checking to savings on March 31st, and it did not make it on the statement for March. This completes what was used to meet our cash flow needs last summer. Payments made in March and so far in April that are not part of our regular expenses but not out of norm include: — Action Plumbing for kitchen sink faucet in the amount of $211.76 — Krauter-Bosn for pressure valves in the amount of $1072.00 — Peoples City Mission $465.00 (Thanksgiving giving) — Matt Talbot $802.50 (Christmas giving) 9

New Business • Holy Week Offering Designation (added to the original agenda). Jody moved and Charlotte seconded to designate the Holy Week offering to the UNL Lutheran Student Health Center “Cross at the Heart” campaign. Motion passed with a unanimous voice vote. Old Business ● Outstanding Property Needs Pastor mentioned she had to mop up a very small amount of water in the craft room following the recent heavy rains. Charlotte Pasco has been in touch with a roofer. Pastor mentioned she received information about a handicapped “Accessibility Grant.” The grant information suggests churches west of Grand Island will be given preference. Discussions have been held in the past about motorizing building entrance doors for improved handicapped accessibility. Jonathan indicated we may have difficulty securing bids prior to the application deadline. There was no further discussion. ● Staffing Needs Our accompanist Mandy West has expressed interest in the worship leader vacancy. Pastor stated most members of the Council-approved search and interview committee have been unavailable recently because of spring break schedules. A time will be found for the committee to meet with Mandy as soon as possible. ● Congregational Check Calls Council discussed how to help Pastor recruit additional call volunteers and inspire others to assist. Jody suggested that perhaps more spontaneous organic connections are happening that people may not be aware of. Jim suggested check in calls may become less important as we slowly begin to reopen. 10
● COVID and Returning to Worship Easter Sunday Pastor stated Easter Sunday worship will be held outside in the parking lot pending weather. The service will be “broadcast” on both FM radio and Zoom. Pastor plans to have Communion and she also stated the worship band will be inside. More volunteers than usual will be needed. As of now Pastor plans to conduct worship in the parking lot at least through the end of May. We may return to in-person worship in June or July. Pastor is planning a vacation day on Sunday April 11 so worship that day will be Zoom only – no parking lot. Annette thanked Pastor and the tech experts for their assistance and expertise. Also, Pastor stated there will be no palms for the congregation for Palm Sunday. Future Technology Jonathan has secured webcams for Easter Sunday use. Small Groups Jonathan stated building use requests from Troop 159, Pack 59, the Daylily Society, two Bible Study Groups (Circles), and the Men’s Bible Study group have been approved. The Girl Scouts have also requested to use the building and the request will be considered by the Exec Team. Reports ● Minutes of Last Council Meeting Pastor requested three edits to the February minutes. Jody moved and Annette seconded to approve the amended February minutes. Motion passed with a unanimous voice vote. ● Pastor’s Report Please see Pastor’s report. The beginning February savings account balance was $45,406.24 and the ending balance was $45,406.59. Utility expenses have increased, and the Synod appropriation was submitted. Our savings account still needs to be refunded a $6,000.00 transfer. Greg has not received any notice about our Paycheck Protection Program application. Upcoming Events April 1st - Maundy Thursday April 2nd - Good Friday April 4th - Easter Sunday April 11th - Pastor on Vacation Adjournment Jody moved and Ron seconded to adjourn. Motion passed with a unanimous voice vote. The meeting adjourned at 8:37 PM. Closing Prayer Jody offered the closing prayer. Recorded and submitted by Jim Yankech 11
PASTOR’S REPORT APRIL 2021 1. Wanda Grothen requested a membership transfer to United Lutheran Church. 2. Dave Hahn continues to improve at Bryan West. He is off the ventilator, and the trach was removed April 14. 3. Worship in the parking lot on Easter Sunday was a huge success! We had 85 in the parking lot and 35 online, for a total of 120. I am looking forward to more Sundays together outside, especially as the weather warms up. 4. Wednesday nights at 6pm I am teaching a Bible Study on the Psalms. This should last through mid-June, and then we will move on to something else for the rest of the summer. The group has voted to continue to meet on Zoom for now. 5. Confirmation continues to be held on Wednesday nights at 7:30pm. This will conclude May 19. Parents have asked to continue on Zoom for the remainder of the semester. 6. Thursday nights at 7pm, we are having a discussion of “The Chosen,” which is a 100% privately donated TV show on the life of Jesus. (It is best to view this on The Chosen app, but it is also available on YouTube, if you’re interested. It is worth your time to watch it.) This group also meets on Zoom. 7. The Girl Scouts have decided to donate their unsold cookies to The Lutheran Food Pantry. I met with them on Friday, April 16. Tom and Lynn Ochsner were also there and gave them a tour and a short presentation on the Pantry, how many families we serve, etc. 12
