Day 1: Sunday, 01 March 2020 Arrive in Johannesburg: Lion & Safari Park and Welcome Dinner Day Itinerary On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport you will be met by an African Angel Tours representative who will take time to explain the itinerary to you and answer any questions which you might have about your holiday. You will be transferred to your hotel to check-in and later a tour to the Lion and Safari Park. Though Joburg is not officially one of South Africa’s three capital cities, it is home to the Constitutional Court, the country's highest court. Because of its location on mineral-rich land, the city is known for its gold and diamond trade. Lion and Safari Park The park is a 600-hectare wilderness reserve where employees and volunteers care for some of Africa’s most iconic animals. It is home to white lion, South African cheetah, Cape wild dog, hyena, black-backed jackal, antelope, giraffes, and ostrich. Your activity includes a guided lion and wild dog tour and lion cub interaction. The guided tour is approximately a 45-minute tour on a game viewing truck led by an experienced Lion Park guide. After, you have the opportunity to interact with lion cubs. You have the option of eating lunch (at your own cost) at their onsite restaurant that overlooks the reserve, where giraffes and ostrich wander freely. Welcome Dinner: The Orbit Jazz Club End your day off with welcome dinner at Orbit Jazz Club in Braamfontein. The Orbit concept finds its roots and spirit in a small Jazz Social Club established in Troyeville, Johannesburg, in the early 2000's by Aymeric Péguillan and 3 other partners. Peg's Cosy Corner, as the venue was called, presented an intimate environment where musicians and jazz aficionados would hang around to listen to occasional live music and recordings till late at night around a drink. Over a 2|Page
decade later, a venue is reborn in Braamfontein, a booming and dynamic part of town, where Péguillan and his 2 partners, Dan Sermand & Kevindren Naidoo, developed a concept that would lead the way in offering the best possible creative expression platform for jazz musicians in Johannesburg. After months of intense brainstorming, consultations with musicians and negotiations with stakeholders around the nature of the new venture, The Orbit, a Live Music venue and Bistro, finally came to life. Orbit Jazz Club brings the best of both worlds together – food and music. The vibe is relaxed, in keeping with its location in this trendy part of town. Day 2: Monday, 02 March 2020 Johannesburg: Apartheid Museum, Soweto Tour & Othandweni Orphanage Day Itinerary You will have an early start on this day as you will embark on a historic journey of South Africa. After breakfast, your tour guide will pick you up for your Apartheid Museum and Soweto Tours. Activities • Apartheid Museum • Soweto Tour • Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum • Kliptown Walk • Sakhumzi Restaurant • Othandweni Orphanage 3|Page
Apartheid Museum The museum displays the rise and fall of apartheid. You walk from one room to another, each illustrating another element of the oppressive regime. You will gain a greater understanding of what individuals endured by reading and watching first-hand accounts. While the museum brings to light the atrocities committed during apartheid, it also emphasizes how South Africa is coming to terms with its past and working towards a better future through truth and reconciliation. Soweto Tour During apartheid, the government separated Soweto from the rest of Johannesburg to make it a completely Black area. The name “Soweto” comes from the first two letters of each word in South Western Townships. Today, Soweto remains a group of settlements on the outskirts of Johannesburg and is the biggest township in the city. While many parts of the township are still impoverished, Soweto is also a bustling cultural hub known for music, dancing, art, and sport. Famous residents include Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Trevor Noah. On tour, you will walk around various parts of Soweto. In addition to viewing various famous landmarks, you will have the opportunity to walk inside the home that former President Nelson Mandela resided in from 1946-1962. Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum On 16 June 1976, thousands of students gathered in Soweto to begin a protest march against the implementation of Afrikaans being one of two main languages of instruction in school. The protest quickly turned deadly when police opened fire on the students. Hector Pieterson, 12 years old, was one of the first casualties of the Soweto Uprising- there were over 500 killed that day. The museum honours the role of school children of South Africa and how they contributed towards ending apartheid. Kliptown Walk Kliptown, a poor neighbourhood with an astonishingly rich history, taking visitors into the heart of the community and connecting them with locals, stopping in at local businesses and places of interest, while sensitively introducing visitors to the local customs and traditions that are specific to the township. Kliptown is the oldest area of Soweto and is a place of striking contrasts. At its centre is the Walter Sisulu Square, famous as the place where in 1955 the Congress of the People met to present the Freedom Charter, a statement of principles calling for a non-racial, free and democratic South Africa, which forms the basis of South Africa's constitution today. The streets surrounding the square are busy with fruit and vegetable markets, traditional healers and wholesalers Sakhumzi Restaurant Nestled on Vilakazi Street, Sakhumzi’s features traditional South African dishes like umngqusho, umleqwa, pap, and mogodu. We go during their buffet hours, so you can sample each of the dozens of dishes they offer. The outdoor seating overlooks a street that is often busy with street performers and small goods vendors. 4|Page
Othandweni Orphanage Othandweni, which means "Place of Love", is situated in Mofolo South, Soweto is a non-profit organization (NPO) and offers residential care for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. The Centre was established in 1984 and caters for 90 children from the ages of birth to 18 years. Othandweni acts as a place of safety where children are placed until suitable families have been found, either by our Adoptions or Foster Care Departments. Those children who cannot be immediately placed stay at Othandweni for as long as is necessary. There is a great need for facilities such as Othandweni as incidences of child abandonment, abuse and neglect are increasing. In addition, we are now faced with a growing number of AIDS orphans and HIV+ babies in need of shelter and special care. The Centre also has limited space available for destitute mothers or pregnant women who are contemplating the futures of their unborn children.
