The Shepherd’s Lyre September 29, 2021 Murder Mystery Luncheon Theme Announced! Hello SHCC Family! Because of the amazing feedback we received about this event we’ve decided our official theme for our Luncheon will be Midnight at the Masquerade! (Sunday, October 24th 12:00 PM - 2:30 PMish). We’re excited to host you because it will be free (donations optional), no volunteers necessary, and all family and friends you wish to invite are welcome! Here’s what you need to know: Instead of a traditional Fall Festival this year, we heard that many of you would be interested in partici- pating in a live Murder Mystery Luncheon Party! The event will play out like a live action version of the board game Clue while being a bit melodramatic. There will be plenty of guidance from the hired actors and costumes are encouraged. You can participate as much or as little as you wish to help us make this an experience to remem- ber! Nursery care will be provided and we will have lots of activities in the Education Building and outside for school-aged kids and youth as well. If your pre-teen or teen would like to stay with the adults to try and help solve the mystery they are welcome to do so. Food will be provided, and more details will be given at a later date. If you plan on attending, please continue to email Christina your RSVPs to let us know you’re coming. Thank you to everyone who has done so, so far. Hands on Housing Update We now have the address of the home we will be painting during the Hands on Housing work day, October 23rd, 2021. The address is 5218 Marymount Dr. It is off of East 51st Street. I can also confirm that lunch will be served to the volunteers around noon. A few other Disciples of Christ church groups will be joining together that day. If you have a conflict on October 23rd you may work on October 16th instead. As always, it is not necessary to be a skilled painter. We will be painting outside, with plenty of drop cloths to catch drips, and we need all skill levels. And no one will be asked to get on a ladder unless you are very comfortable with it. It is always a great pleasure to serve our neighbors who need a helping hand. I look forward to it every year. If anyone would like to join in, please let me know, so I can email you the volunteer liability waiver form and answer any questions. ~Mark Hellums mhellums@sacheminc.com (For Mark’s number, please message the church office shccaustin@gmail.com.)

Moment for Mission Years ago, while walking to my predominately white middle school, I witnessed something that has been preserved in my memory for decades. Several yards ahead of me was Josette; a girl I barely knew. Although her skin color was the same as the majority of the students, her appearance was drastically different from other female classmates. She wore long dark skirts, sweaters, heavy black brogans, and often kept a scarf tied around her head (not a burka or hijab). As we approached the schoolyard, I could hear a few boys yelling at her. As I got closer, I heard these words: “Go back to where you came from you nasty Jew!”, “You’re ugly!”, “Nobody wants you here!” There were other unkind statements. Even though I didn’t know what a Jew was, I knew that their actions were wrong. I looked ahead, pretending to not hear or see anything, and went straight to my class. The prophet Isaiah admonishes God’s beloved in Isaiah 56:1 to, “Maintain justice and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.” Frequently, Rev. Dr. Mar- tin Luther King, Jr. reminds us that “The time is always ripe to do what is right”. The message is clear: We are to do what is right with the time God has given us. It is a precious gift like the gift of reconcili- ation through Christ Jesus. How I wish I had the courage to take time to do what was right on Jo- sette’s behalf. The Ministry of Reconciliation offers each of us the opportunity to “do what is right”. Your giving supports diversity & inclusion through leadership development in our colleges, provides grants to ministry partners to further the work of anti-racism. It creates opportunities to heal our brokenness by promoting relationship-building through our One Bag of Tea program, and by equipping congrega- tions to be advocates for racial justice in their communities. Yes! The time is always ripe to reveal God’s justice. Thank you in advance for your generosity to Reconciliation Ministry!
