FINAL MOCK UP 25th NEW.qxp_10 - 11 12/6/17 9:36 AM Page 5 INTRODUCTION 3 Whether you come from Madison, New London or outside Connecticut, you most probably are about to have a new experience. You are setting out along some typical everyday streets of one or another old New England town, no less historic than many others, but a little different. There is a decided difference, these historic old streets have taken on the task of exposing you to an up to date cultural adventure, Contemporary Sculpture up close. Close enough to gently touch without fear of intimidating guards or hurried on by guides pushing you along just when you have that crazy urge to stop and think about what in the devil was the artist thinking when spending so much time creating that work of art. The sponsors of these unusual art exhibitions have a mission to acquaint their fellow Americans with a very neglected facet of the nation’s art community, sculpture –the most neglected of all the arts. We hope afficionados, and inexperienced alike, will leave taking away from this long walk past many different styles and ideas, a feeling that their lives have been stimulated and that attention to daily more demanding encounters be put aside by this long more tranquil life-stroll. MADISON JOINS YOU AT THE TOP OF STATE The New London MILE begins at the Library, Courthouse and Garde Arts Center

FINAL MOCK UP 25th NEW.qxp_10 - 11 12/6/17 9:36 AM Page 8 6 READ FIRST ...a new perspective If you began the MILE in New London at the Garde and at William Evans’ “Catastrophy” and on to the Courthouse, near the work by sculp- tor Erwin Hauer titled “E Pluribus Unum”, and you have had the stamina to reach Mr. Hauer’s “Snowman” at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, you’ve walked Hauer to Hauer ––indeed you’ve traversed a very long MILE. You have experienced first-hand a modest new perspective displaying 21st Century Contemporary American sculpture. Here the MILE becomes a unique preface to the Lyman Allyn’s newly reinstalled permanent collection of American art titled “American Perspectives”. We admit that you should not attempt to visit the museum galleries immediately after your long walk. But, now you are ready to experience the three major perspectives of this wondrous museum collection. With paintings, sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts from the 18th through the 20th century, the renovated galleries offer a very fresh approach to both new and more familiar treasures.
