Town, on the border with Old Country, all his life.
He knows the rules: no going out after dark; no
drinking; no litter; no fighting. You don't want to
get on the wrong side of the people who run Little
Town. When he meets Pavel Duda, a refugee from

Then the bombs come, and the soldiers from Old
Country, and Little Town changes for ever.
Sometimes, to keep the people you love safe, you
have to do bad things. As Little Town's rules
crumble, Charlie is sucked into a dangerous game.
There's a gun, and a bad man, and his closest
friend, and his dearest enemy.

SURVIVAL

A remarkable portrait of a girl who has hit rock
bottom but begins a climb back to herself at a
wilderness survival camp.
3:47 a.m. That’s when they come for Wren Clemmens.
She’s hustled out of her house and into a waiting car,
then a plane, and then taken on a forced march into the
desert. This is what happens to kids who’ve gone so
far off the rails, their parents don’t know what to do
with them anymore. This is wilderness therapy camp.
Eight weeks of survivalist camping in the desert. Eight
weeks to turn your life around. Yeah, right.
The Wren who arrives in the Utah desert is angry and bitter, and blaming everyone
but herself. But angry can’t put up a tent. And bitter won’t start a fire. Wren’s
going to have to admit she needs help if she’s going to survive.

Burgerville's past is riddled with green cow sightings
and human groundhogs, but the most interesting thing
about the present is the new girl--we'll call her Jane
                            Doe.
Inscrutable, cool, and above all mysterious, Jane seems
as determined to hide her past as Ray is to uncover it.
As fascination turns to friendship and then to
something more, Ray is certain he knows Jane's
darkest, most painful secrets and Jane herself--from past to present. But when the
unthinkable happens, Ray is forced to acknowledge that perhaps history can only tell
us so much.

SPONTANEOUS – AARON STARMER
REALISTIC FICTION – HUMOR – FICTION TO FILM
With all the perfectly lovely young adult novels out there, you decided
to check this one out? It’s got spontaneously combusting teenagers
in it, dude. Not the slow burning type either. We’re talking the
randomly exploding variety. Seniors in high school just walking along,
heading to class, whistling Beyoncé, when—WA-BAM!— they’re
suddenly dripping off the lockers. Is that really something you’re
into?
Confession: I’m actually kinda into that too. So, now that we’ve
established we’re both thoroughly weird and, I assume, thoroughly
open-minded, we can give it shot, right? Let’s at least read the
opening chapters of this bad-boy and see if it features some of the
more intriguing elements such as...
  • Exploding teenagers (obviously). • Self-driving Priuses.
  • Hallucinogenic mushrooms. • Rogue FBI agents.
  • Pyromaniacal boyfriends. • Mad scientists.
  • Triplet toddlers in powder blue suits. • Homecoming.
  • Amur leopards and doomsday preppers. • Spring break.
  • A foul-mouthed female POTUS. • Prom.
  • Ashtanga yoga. • And … Jennifer Lawrence.
  • Youtube sensations.
Notice how I put Jennifer Lawrence last. She’s in the book, so it’s not cheating. And hey, if it takes
America’s most beloved movie star to sell this thing, then that’s what it takes. So, in closing: Jennifer
Lawrence.

I met Melissa in the rubber room, a.k.a. in-school suspension. And
                                    that’s not her real name.
She had secrets, I had enemies.
“People are either useful or dangerous,” she said. “One or the other.”
“Which one am I?” I said.
                                    “You’re both.”
Meili was right. (That’s her real name.)

Jason Wilder is in permanent in-school suspension for fighting. Meili
Wen gets there by breaking a girl’s finger. Jason and Meili don’t just
connect; they collide. Two people who would never cross paths—
outsiders from radically different backgrounds—they form an exhiliarating, unpredictable bond. When
circumstances push, they push back. There’s no plan. And there’s no stopping.
"I am so crap. How can you stand being with me? Don’t answer that or I will crash this thing with both
of us on it, swear to god, are you ready?”
Yes. No. Didn’t matter.
I reached both arms around Meili’s waist as we zoomed down the hill.

Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman.
The drought—or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it—

become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn,
don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers.
Until the taps run dry.
Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation;
neighbors and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when
her parents don’t return and her life—and the life of her brother—is threatened,
Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Saedi uncovered a terrible family secret: she was breaking the law simply by living in

school job, but couldn't because she didn't have a Social Security number.

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the
classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late
father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new
Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An
invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-
and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation
Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her

                           stepsisters get there first.
Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now
they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is
all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another
dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—
until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

And most of all, he wishes he didn’t feel so stuck.
Moss can’t even escape at school—he and his friends are subject to the lack of funds and
crumbling infrastructure at West Oakland High, as well as constant intimidation by the
resource officer stationed in their halls. That was even before the new regulations—it seems
sometimes that the students are treated more like criminals. Something will have to
change—but who will listen to a group of teens?
When tensions hit a fever pitch and tragedy strikes again, Moss must face a difficult choice:
give in to fear and hate or realize that anger can actually be a gift.

far from suitable for the gentleman he was born to be. But
as Monty embarks on his grand tour of Europe, his quests for pleasure and vice are in danger

his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling

and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns
their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt, it calls into question everything he knows,
including his relationship with the boy he adores.

                                    ADVENTURE
Soon to be movie! Red Queen meets The Hunger Games
A Diabolic is ruthless. A Diabolic is powerful. A Diabolic has a single
task: Kill in order to protect the person you’ve been created for.
Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a
galactic senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by
side, but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for
Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives
as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.
When the power-mad Emperor learns Sidonia’s father is participating
in a rebellion, he summons Sidonia to the Galactic court. She is to serve
as a hostage. Now, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect
Sidonia. She must become her. Nemesis travels to the court disguised
as Sidonia—a killing machine masquerading in a world of corrupt
politicians and two-faced senators’ children. It’s a nest of vipers with threats on every side, but Nemesis
must keep her true abilities a secret or risk everything.
As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns there is something more to
her than just deadly force. She finds a humanity truer than what she encounters from most humans.
Amidst all the danger, action, and intrigue, her humanity just might be the thing that saves her life—
and the empire.

In a world where every word and gesture is copyrighted,
patented or trademarked, one girl elects to remain silent.
Speth Jime is anxious to deliver her Last Day speech and
celebrate her transition into adulthood. The moment she
turns fifteen, Speth must pay for every word she speaks, for
every nod, for every scream and even every gesture of
affection. She’s been raised to know the consequences of
falling into debt, and can’t begin to imagine the pain of having
her eyes shocked for speaking words that she’s unable to

But when Speth’s friend Beecher commits suicide rather
than work off his family’s crippling debt, she can’t express her shock and dismay without
breaking her Last Day contract and sending her family into Collection. Rather than read her
speech—rather than say anything at all—she closes her mouth and vows never to speak
again, sparking a movement that threatens to destroy her, her family and the entire city
around them.

Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the
brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert
Ellingham, an early twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a
wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A
place," he said, "where learning is a game."
Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were
kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of
murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious." It became one of the great unsolved
crimes of American history.
True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an
ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her
demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the
jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits
Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder.

MUN MUN – JESSE ANDREWS
                                 DYSTOPIA – WEALTH – HUMOR
In an alternate reality a lot like our world, every person’s
physical size is directly proportional to their wealth. The
poorest of the poor are the size of rats, and billionaires are
                                 the size of skyscrapers.

Warner and his sister Prayer are destitute—and tiny. Their
size is not just demeaning, but dangerous: day and night they
face mortal dangers that bigger richer people don’t ever
have to think about, from being mauled by cats to their
house getting stepped on. There are no cars or phones built
small enough for them, or schools or hospitals, for that
matter—there’s no point, when no one that little has any
purchasing power, and when salaried doctors and teachers
would never fit in buildings so small. Warner and Prayer know
their only hope is to scale up, but how can two littlepoors survive in a world built against
them?

A brilliant, warm, funny trip, unlike anything else out there, and a social novel for our time in
the tradition of 1984 or Invisible Man. Inequality is made intensely visceral by an adventure
and tragedy both hilarious and heartbreaking.

Who can Lena trust to help her find out the truth?
Life in East Germany in the early 1980s is not easy for most
people, but for Lena, it’s particularly hard. After the death
of her parents in a factory explosion and time spent in a
psychiatric hospital recovering from the trauma, she is sent
to live with her stern aunt, a devoted member of the ruling
Communist Party. Visits with her beloved Uncle Erich, a best-
selling author, are her only respite.
One night, her uncle disappears without a trace. Gone also
are all his belongings, his books, and even his birth records.
Lena is desperate to know what happened to him, but it’s as
if he never existed. The worst thing, however, is that she cannot discuss her uncle or her
attempts to find him with anyone, not even her best friends. There are government spies
everywhere. But Lena is unafraid and refuses to give up her search, regardless of the
consequences.
This searing novel about defiance, courage, and determination takes readers into the chilling
world of a society ruled by autocratic despots, where nothing is what it seems.

self-discovery and find support with each other in this gripping,
                                     emotionally resonant novel.
Steffi doesn’t talk, but she has so much to say.
Rhys can’t hear, but he can listen.
Steffi has been a selective mute for most of her life. The condition’s
name has always felt ironic to her, because she certainly does not
“select” not to speak. In fact, she would give anything to be able to
speak as easily and often as everyone around her can. She suffers
from crippling anxiety, and uncontrollably, in most situations simply
can’t open her mouth to get out the words.
Steffi’s been silent for so long that she feels completely invisible. But Rhys, the new boy at school, sees
her. He’s deaf, and her knowledge of basic sign language means that she’s assigned to help him acclimate.
To Rhys, it doesn’t matter that Steffi doesn’t talk. As they find ways to communicate, Steffi discovers
that she does have a voice, and that she’s falling in love with the one person who makes her feel brave
enough to use it. But as she starts to overcome a lifelong challenge, she’ll soon confront questions about
the nature of her own identity and the very essence of what it is to know another person.
IN OTHER LANDS – SARA REES BRENNAN
FANTASY – COMING OF AGE
For fans of:
   • Maggie Stiefvater – Raven Cycle
   • Terry Pratchett
   • William Goldman – The Princess Bride
   • For Harry Potter graduates, ready to move into the adult world

Despite his aversion to war, work, and most people
(human or otherwise), teenaged Elliott, a human
transported to a fantasy world where he attends a
school for warriors and diplomatic advisers, finds that
two unlikely ideas, friendship and world peace, may
actually be possbile.
The Borderlands aren’t like anywhere else. Don’t try to
smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over
the wall that marks the Border — unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your
backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and — best of all as
far as Elliot is concerned — mermaids.
It’s a novel about surviving four years in the most unusual of schools, about
friendship, falling in love, diplomacy, and finding your own place in the world — even if
it means giving up your phone.
THE APOCALYPSE OF ELENA MENDOZA – SHAUD
DAVID HUTCHINSON
FANTASY – APOCALYPTIC FICTION – HUMOR
Sixteen-year-old Elena Mendoza is the product of a
virgin birth.
This can be scientifically explained (it’s called
parthenogenesis), but what can’t be explained is how
Elena is able to heal Freddie, the girl she’s had a crush
on for years, from a gunshot wound in a Starbucks
parking lot. Or why the boy who shot Freddie, David
Combs, disappeared from the same parking lot minutes
later after getting sucked up into the clouds. Other
things that can’t be explained are the talking girl on
the front of a tampon box, or the reasons that David
Combs shot Freddie in the first place.
As more unbelievable things occur, and Elena continues to perform miracles, the only
remaining explanation is the least logical of all—that the world is actually coming to
an end, and Elena is possibly the only one who can do something about it.

Darius doesn't think he'll ever be enough, in America or in Iran.
Hilarious and heartbreaking, this unforgettable debut introduces a
brilliant new voice in contemporary YA.
Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more
about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He’s a Fractional
Persian—half, his mom’s side—and his first-ever trip to Iran is
                                    about to change his life.
Darius has never really fit in at home, and he’s sure things are going to be the same in Iran. His clinical
depression doesn’t exactly help matters, and trying to explain his medication to his grandparents only
makes things harder. Then Darius meets Sohrab, the boy next door, and everything changes. Soon, they’re
spending their days together, playing soccer, eating faludeh, and talking for hours on a secret rooftop
overlooking the city’s skyline. Sohrab calls him Darioush—the original Persian version of his name—and
Darius has never felt more like himself than he does now that he’s Darioush to Sohrab.

DEAR READER – MARY O’CONNELL
ADVENTURE – CLASSIC REIMAGINED – COMING
OF AGE

Gilmore Girls meets Wuthering Heights, a modern-day
take on Emily Brontë’s classic novel.
For seventeen-year-old Flannery Fields, the only respite
from the plaid-skirted mean girls at Sacred Heart High
School is her beloved teacher Miss Sweeney’s AP
English class. But when Miss Sweeney doesn't show up
to teach Flannery's favorite book, Wuthering Heights,
leaving behind her purse, Flannery knows something is
wrong.
The police are called, and Flannery gives them
everything—except Miss Sweeney's copy of Wuthering Heights. This she holds onto.
And good thing she does, because when she opens it, it has somehow transformed
into Miss Sweeney's real-time diary. It seems Miss Sweeney is in New York City—and
she's in trouble.
So Flannery does something very unFlannery-like: she skips school and sets out for
Manhattan, with the book as her guide.
DENTON LITTLE’S DEATHDATE – LANCE RUBIN
HUMOR – DEATH – MALE PROTAG.
Get ready to die laughing: this is an outrageously funny
ride through the last hours of a teenager’s life as he
searches for love, meaning, answers, and (just maybe) a
                              way to live on.
In a world exactly like our own except that everyone
knows the day on which they will die. For Denton, that’s
in just two days—the day of his senior prom. Despite
his early deathdate, Denton has always wanted to live
a normal life, but his final days are filled with dramatic
firsts. First hangover. First sex. First love triangle—
as the first sex seems to have happened not with his
adoring girlfriend, but with his best friend’s hostile
sister. (Though he’s not totally sure—see, first hangover.) His anxiety builds when
he discovers a strange purple rash making its way up his body. Is this what will kill
him? And then a strange man shows up at his funeral, claiming to have known
Denton’s long-deceased mother, and warning him to beware of suspicious government
characters. . . . Suddenly Denton’s life is filled with mysterious questions and precious
little time to find the answers.
