                              A powerful feminist voice

"Blow by blow, Rebekka Endler provides examples, which she underpins with current
studies, interviews and often witty glimpses into history. In all this, she skilfully bal-
ances appropriate sarcasm, journalistic curiosity and a desire to enlighten, and deliv-
ers nice drawings to boot." Anette Schneider, NDR KULTUR

""It's a man's world": whether it's seat belts, the dosage of medication or room tem-
perature - much of our environment has been standardised by men for men. Women
therefore freeze at work and are more likely to die of a heart attack. Rebekka Endler
shows the injustices of our material world." - DIE ZEIT Sachbuch Bestenliste

Man is the measure of all things. Literally.

Our environment was designed by men for men. In Das Patriarchat der Dinge, Re-
bekka Endler opens our eyes to the androcentric designs that are all around us and
demonstrates the potentially life-threatening consequences they can have for wom-
en. All of conventional medicine, for example (apart from gynaecology) is calibrated
around the male body – from diagnostic processes to medical devices to the dosages
of medications. Crash test dummies in cars are also based on the male physique,
and so, by extension, is the whole car, including the airbags and seatbelts. The pub-
lic space is designed for men too: architecture, infrastructure, transport, even the
number of public toilets. But whether or not a street is lit at night can have a huge
impact on how safe women feel outside their own four walls.
Who survives a heart attack? Or a car crash? Who feels cold at work? Who finds
technical devices easiest to operate? Who is the internet for?
The patriarchy is the author and designer of our environment. Once we become
aware of that, we suddenly see these questions in a very different light.

Rebekka Endler works as a freelance author, journalist and podcaster.
Das Patriarchat der Dinge is her first book.

gales us with a tale about the love of wine and
his own failed attempt at becoming a winemaker.

Those who truly understand wine also under-

                                    cheek.

The Vineyard of Life

Carsten Sebastian Henn is a wine journalist, author of numerous non-fiction works
and crime thrillers all about wine, has studied viticulture, and tasted the best wines in
the world – and yet his own attempts to become a winemaker were a resounding fail-
ure. At a vineyard on the Moselle, he tries his hand at Riesling, the holy grail of Ger-
man winemaking. Yet it soon turns out that his wine just doesn’t taste good. It’s all
wrong. And so the wine expert poses the question: how do we get Riesling right?
And what about life? Henn examines his failure by way of observations and conver-
sations about wine as a product of nature. Along the way, he meets winemakers with
differing philosophies, from proponents of the ‘do nothing’ maxim to out-and-out spir-
itualists.
Is the philosophy of wine not also the philosophy of life? Carsten Sebastian Henn
gradually comes to understand wine as an instrument of choice on the road to mind-
fulness. Together with his partner and children, he returns for the first time to his
vineyard on the Moselle to help with the harvest and to make his peace with his wine
- and with himself.
On the way, he learns how to make a good Riesling, but he also learns a lot about
humility, tolerance, patience, dedication, pleasure, and joie de vivre – the ingredients
for a good wine, and a good life.

Carsten Sebastian Henn is a culinarian through and through. He owns a vineyard
on the Moselle, keeps chickens and bees, studied viticulture, is a trained barista and
one of Germany's most renowned restaurant critics. His novels and non-fiction books
have a total print run of almost half a million copies.

Benjamin, Martha and Lonesome George share the same fate: they were so-called
"endlings", the last of their kind. Benjamin the Tasmanian wolf died in a zoo on Tas-
mania in 1936. With Martha, the line of passenger pigeons came to an end. And the
lonely George, symbolic figure of the Galapagos Islands, sealed the history of the
Pinta giant tortoises. Since the death of these last representatives, their species has
been lost forever and irretrievably.

Using historical illustrations by outstanding painters such as John James Audubon
and John Gould, this book recalls the beauty of fifty extinct species and relates re-
markable facts about their biology and natural history, as well as anecdotes and curi-
osities, especially about their relationship with humans. In this way, it impressively
shows us the losses that the animal world has already suffered due to our destructive
treatment of nature, saves nowadays unknown species such as the giant auk or the
quagga from oblivion, and at the same time is an incentive to prevent further species
extinction.

How animals and plants are reacting to climate change – and what we need to
learn from it

For decades, rising temperatures have been an irrefutable fact. Climate change is
not on its way: it’s already here. But how will it affect global flora and fauna?
In this book, Bernhard Kegel looks at how our environment will change in the coming
years. What migrations of flora and fauna will we see – and what will this mean for
human life? What will happen when natural cycles collapse: when fish hatch because
the water is warmer, for example, but there is no food available because phytoplank-
ton do not start multiplying until the days get longer? Two dry years have been
enough to cause serious damage to German forests. What if there are more on the
way? In order to mitigate the consequences of climate change, which are already life-
threatening for large swaths of the world’s population, and to prepare ourselves for
the new realities ahead, we need to know how animals and plants are reacting to
climatic changes. Because nature will endure – but it will be a different kind of nature.
In Die Natur der Zukunft, Bernhard Kegel explores what it will look like.

Bernhard Kegel was born in Berlin in 1953 and studied chemistry and biology at the Freie Universität

                                  A courageous and self-critical father presents a

The myth of the new father

New fathers and old inequalities

In Bad Good Dads, one father stops making excuses. ‘Us new dads have been shirk-
ing our duties as far as day-to-day care work goes,’ he says, ‘and there’s a reason for
that.’ With honesty and a dose of self-criticism, Moorstedt explains what has been
keeping him and other fathers from taking on more family duties. His conclusion?
Men are rejecting the revolution because it’s made easy for them to do so. Moorstedt
examines which strategies men employ to resist caring work. Using studies and sta-
tistics, he observes the current division of domestic duties in Germany. He also
speaks to couples from different demographic backgrounds on the subject of the
‘mental load’ and expectations of modern mothers.

This book is long overdue; women have addressed the topic time and again, now at
last a man has entered the debate and demonstrates the patriarchal structures that
lie behind the classic excuses, and the effects that the gulf between the expectations
women have of their men, and men’s attitudes to family duties, have on marriage,
sexuality and not least on our society.

Tobias Moorstedt, 43, is a journalist and author. He co-founded the editorial agency
Nansen & Piccard and now heads up its Hamburg office. Moorstedt attended the
German School of Journalism in Munich and studied politics, sociology and literature
at Ludwig Maximilian University and Columbia University in New York. Since 2000,
he has reported on new developments in technology and culture for Süddeutsche
Zeitung, ARD, the Austrian, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Spiegel (Online). He was
chief editor at Wired, Neon and National Geographic and has written a number of
books. He lives with his family in Hamburg and Kronberg, Taunus.

                                 tween man and dog

“My dog has made me a freer person, perhaps even a better one.”
Ilka Piepgras

Ilka Piepgras never wanted a pet. Animals never really spoke to her – in fact they still
don’t - and she considered nature little more than a backdrop for relaxation. But then
her children convinced her to buy a puppy. What she hadn’t reckoned on, at 55 years
of age, was the young Bernese Mountain dog, Teddy, changing her life in a flash and
making her a different person. She was suddenly gripped by a longing for nature.
Alongside tales of dog training and early morning walkies, the author shares her self-
doubt, as Teddy is wild and boisterous. How do you make a dog fit for society, with-
out denying its nature and instincts?

The Animal of My Life is an intelligent, wonderfully written, emotional book about
dogs, puppy training, and the relationship between man and dog from the perspec-
tive and experience of Ilka Piepgras, who also consults the latest scientific studies on
dogs and their behaviour and tells us what it really means to own a dog.

Ilka Piepgras, born 1964, studied political sciences in Munich and began working as
a reporter at Berliner Zeitung in 1991. After a year of study at Harvard, she moved to
Financial Times Deutschland, where she worked on the book pages for the weekend
edition. These days, she is an author and editor at ZEITmagazin.

“Flöthmann’s fabulous comics employ his
very own sign language to create a wry take
on tales of old” SÜDWEST PRESSE (on
Grimm’s Fairy Tales – without Words)

It’s not words that make a hero...

The myths and legends of history’s greatest he-
roes have been with us for centuries, if not long-
er. Many epic tales have been told about them,
but to be quite honest, who’s got time for that
these days? Frank Flöthmann presents five de-
lightful retellings of the stories of heroes of myth,
all without words. Odysseus, Robin Hood, the
Pied Piper of Hamlin, Tarzan and Ali Baba and
his forty thieves take us on a journey through
cultural history, and we get to glimpse behind
the curtain at last: did the Trojan horse ultimately have the effect Odysseus intend-
ed? What role did Jane really play in Tarzan’s life, and the lives of the apes? And
would Robin Hood have gained any renown (or gold) without Lady Marian?

In peerless fashion, Frank Flöthmann translates the heroic tales of times past into his
own world of pictures: sharp, original and incredibly funny.

Frank Flöthmann, born in 1967, wanted to become a comic daughtsman already at the age
of eleven. After studying graphic design he began working als illustrator for magazines and
advertising. He works has already been shwon in several exhibitions. With DuMont he has
published so far “Grimms Märchen ohne Worte” (2013), “Männer ohne Worte” (2014),

An illustrated gardening book offering clear,
step-by-step, entertaining instructions in all are-
                                    as of sustainable gardening

For anyone with an interest in sustainable eco-
systems and their practical implementation – whether you’re new to gardening
or a professional, for any garden big or small

“Permaculture is a creative approach to design and a response to a world of
dwindling energy and resources”
David Holmgren, co-founder of the permaculture concept

“Permaculture is a dance where nature takes the lead”
Bill Mollison, ‘godfather of permaculture’

How could my garden look in five years’ time? What is my soil like and what does it
need? What kinds of beds should I make and how? What’s the point of crop rotation?
How do I attract helpful visitors to my garden? And how do I get rid of bothersome,
slimy slugs and snails?
More and more people are escaping to the country, tending to allotments, cultivating
their gardens at home or little fields by the side of the road. This book provides an
easy introduction to the key principles of permaculture for everyone with a garden,
and even those who are still dreaming of one, as well as numerous suggestions and
practical tips on topics such as sustainable planting, growing fruit and vegetables,
preparing the soil, and organic manures.
With her easy-to-grasp and entertaining illustrations, Angela Gerlach provides a step-
by-step explanation of how easy (and often how much cheaper) it is to use the re-
sources you have on hand to create functioning cycles, and achieve healthy soil with
very good yields – which, among other positives, make a valuable contribution to-
wards combatting global heating.

Angela Gerlach studied at the HAW Hamburg Faculty of Design and completed her diploma
in 2006. Since then, she has worked as illustrator, working with Greenpeace, Die Zeit, Der
Spiegel, the City of Hamburg, and Deutsche Bahn, among others. She also offers graphic
recording and is experienced in simplifying complex issues.
She has been cultivating a permaculture vegetable garden at a hotel on the North Sea for a
decade now, and in 2019 she completed her training as a permaculture designer.

A different kind of museum visit - an unusual
tour of the world's most important museums

Encounters of a special kind: wordless dialogue
                                     with Rembrandt, Titian and Co

The Perfect Match - when art and viewer are unexpectedly well matched

In the right place at the right time

Unnoticed, Filip Haag makes grand rounds through the museum, on the lookout for
unique moments in which artwork and viewer - without intending it - form a perfect
symbiosis. At the decisive moment, he presses the shutter release and captures
special, surprising and, above all, funny situations that most of us would have
missed:
A drawing student in the Metropolitan Museum in front of the portrait of a painter who
seems to be portraying him; visitors passing by in exact step with Giacometti's "Strid-
ing Man" in the Fondation Beyeler; a young woman flirting with her smartphone next
to a classicist marble statue in an identical selfie pose in the Louvre ...
While the viewers take in the works, the works simultaneously take in the viewers -
and so, quite by chance, a new, independent motif emerges in which the two worlds,
art (history) and the present, merge.

“I like to notice and capture movements of people that make artworks visible in
a new and different way. I have a quick eye for that - and the hidden camera
always at the ready." FILIP HAAG

Filip Haag, born in Bern in 1961, studied art and literary history in Zurich and Berlin and has
been a painter, draughtsman and photographer since 1986. With a New York scholarship, he
initiated the present project in 2016, initially photographing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
and since then also in many important European museums. His works have been exhibited
in Switzerland and New York and have won several awards.

One of the world's greatest sporting events from a completely new perspective

A unique testimony of time and at the same time a special journey through
France

"A carnivalesque spectacle that transforms landscapes, villages, towns, moun-
tains into 'Bruegelian pictures'." Herman Seidl

The Tour de France: A Country in a State of Emergency

Whether in the lowlands or in the high mountains, in small villages or shortly before
the finishing straight in the middle of Paris - every year in July, millions of enthusiastic
fans from all over the world form up along the route of the Tour de France and eager-
ly await the great, albeit brief, moment when the peloton rushes past them. They ea-
gerly await the arrival of the top athletes, always ready to cheer them on fervently -
and sometimes with fancy props - at the decisive moment.
For thirty years, Tour photographer Herman Seidl has focused his camera on these
scenes that exist for only a few hours, often only minutes or seconds, capturing the
special atmosphere and passion among the spectators that contribute significantly to
the appeal of the race.
Waiting for Godeau*' is an incomparable selection of images full of dynamism, thrills,
dedication and wit, and at the same time a fascinating testimony to the times as well
as a special journey through France with its wonderful landscapes, architecture,
towns and people.

* Roger Godeau (1920-2000) was a French cyclist who is considered the presumed model for the title
character of Samuel Beckett's play 'Waiting for Godot'.

Herman Seidl (*1960) is a Salzburg based freelance photographer and short-filmmaker.
Since 2001 he is a permanent assistant professor at the Multi Media Department of Salzburg
University of Applied Arts. Herman received cultural grants to Rome/Italy, Arizona/USA and
Paris/France and his photographs and handmade books are in public and private collections.

Perfect doesn’t need to be perfect

Get that Eureka feeling by reducing cooking to what really matters

Cook! Do not recook

Uncompromisingly easy

Mercedes Lauenstein and Juri Gottschall have lived in Munich and Northern Italy for years.
With their online magazine, Splendido, they’ve developed a reputation as authentic
ambassadors of real Italian cooking. They present a modern, attractive take on the principles
of good cooking and explain why the best quality ingredients matter. It’s no wonder their
community of fans continues to grow.
Now they’ve decided to search their bank of recipes for the ones that have really earned their
place, distilling the very essence of pleasure, and have compiled them in a book.
The book features well-known dishes rarely listed in recipe books, including Italian classics
like Penne all’arrabbiata, much-loved dishes like bucatini with raisins and sardines, tortelli
with artichokes and mint oil or a potato salad that comes alive with olive oil – the Splendido
recipes expand on their repertoire in a way which is both intuitive and uncomplicated.
And like an Italian nonna responding to the question of how much of a certain ingredient to
add with the words ‘quanto basta’, the Splendido dishes are also often listed without precise
quantities. This might sound unusual, but it’s an important step away from the dictates of
recipes, and towards self-determined cooking and inner peace.

Mercedes Lauenstein, born in Kappeln in 1988, writes novels, essays, columns and literary
reportage for newspapers and magazines. Together with Juri Gotschall, she writes regular
recipes and thoughts on eating and consumer culture for Splendido. She lives in Munich and
Northern Italy. Find out more about Mercedes Lauenstein at mercedeslauenstein.de

Juri Gottschall, born in Hamburg in 1979, works as an author and photographer in Munich
and Italy. He has won several renowned photography competitions and, together with
Mercedes Lauenstein, he co-founded Splendido magazine, which covers Italy, cooking and
food culture. Find out more about Juri Gottschall at jurigottschall.com

Fruit Varieties With a Past

A pear called ‘Madame Verté’ or a plum called ‘Graf Althanns’, an apple whose name trans-
lates as ‘English Hospital Reinette’ or the ‘Forelle (trout) pear’ – the monikers of these heir-
loom fruits are as unusual and unique as their appearance and taste, just as poetic as the
many stories that entwine themselves around them: from the pear that travelled twice by ship
to America. From the cherry, for which Frederick the Great paid half a month's wages. From
the apple that inspired Newton's theory of gravity.

This book presents fifty heirloom varieties of fruit, accompanied by historical illustrations and
entertaining explanations:
Apples and pears, cherries and plums, apricots and peaches - including classics such as
'Gravensteiner' or 'Morello Cherry', rarities such as 'White Winter Calvill' and unusual varie-
ties such as mulberry, quince or medlar. Tips on cultivation and variety selection as well as
recipes for regional specialities complete the portraits of the varieties. A short introduction
portrays the capricious history of heirloom fruit varieties, the rediscovery of their unique aro-
mas and the immense ecological relevance they have today.

Author, translator and gardener Sofia Blind, born 1964, lives in the Lahn valley. In her one-
hectare garden she cultivates over thirty fruit-bearing trees – some rare old varieties such as
the ‘Champagne Reinette’, the ‘Beauty of Bath’ or the ‘Great Greengage’ as well as curiosi-
ties such as mulberries, persimmons and Chinese dates. Her book ‘Words that don’t exist in
High German’ was published by DuMont in 2019, and she translates the works of
John Lewis-Stempel and Nigel Slater.

How you can turn your life upside down without yoga
The fear of growing old bothers us more than the aging process itself. Our horizons close in with the
years not because the world around us is growing smaller, but because our gaze increasingly sinks
down to the ground, until we reach the point of seeing only the tips of our toes. Gregor Eisenhauer
does not focus on the unavoidable decline of our bodies nor on illnesses, but on the gradual petrifica-
tion of our thought process, which causes us to grow older much faster than it is actually happening.

                              Zeit

In 1935, with a doctorate and no job, the 25 year-old Gombrich was invited by Walter
Neurath (later founder of Thames & Hudson) to attempt a history of the world for
younger readers. Written in an intense six weeks, Eine Kurze Weltgeschichte für
junge Leser was first published in Vienna the same year. An immediate success, it
has since been translated into seventeen languages, tailored for the different
markets. The original German edition was reissued in 1985 with an Epilogue bringing
the story to the present, and Gombrich further revised it shortly before his death,
aged 92, in 2001.
In forty chapters, Gombrich tells the story of man from the stone age to the atomic
bomb. There emerges a colourful picture of wars and conquests, grand works of art,
the spread and limitations of science, tribes evolving towards society.

This is not a text dominated by dates and facts, but by the sweep of mankind's
experience across the centuries, a guide to man's achievements and an acute
witness to his frailties. What has made the Little History an international success?
The key is its tone - completely clear, straightforward, relaxed, unpompous, humane -
Gombrich makes immediate contact with the curious of all ages. It is the product of a
pan-European sensibility, and is wholly free of nationalistic preoccupations. The
broad sweep of mankind's history seems freshly intelligible when told in this
profoundly generous spirit.

Ernst Gombrich was the author of the international classic The Story of Art. Winner of the Erasmus
Prize, the Hegel Prize, the Wittgenstein Prize, and the Goethe Prize, he was admitted to Britain's
highest honour, the Order of Merit, in 1988.

Nobody has written funnier or more poetically about the love of books
A woman, a family and dream come true

Petra Hartlieb tells her own story in this book. It is the story of a coincidence and the decision
to leave one’s old life behind in order to fulfil one’s dream, namely become the owner of a
literary bookstore. A bookstore that turned into the living room for her family and the meeting
place for the whole neighbourhood. With regular customers that become friends and friends
that become regular customers.

Petra Hartlieb tells this story in a snappy and humorous frame of mind, making every line a
pleasure to read and every chapter a declaration of love to the world of books.

Petra Hartlieb lives together with her family in and above a book store. Her own. Originally a
crackpot idea while on vacation. She and her husband turned their attention to a recently
closed Vienna bookstore with a long tradition. From one day to the next she quit her job and
started a new life in a new city without knowing what she was getting herself into. Petra
Hartlieb is still a hippie at heart; officially however she has been a businesswoman for ten
years.

You cannot live alone...
Do you like bacteria? Probably not. Although without microbes there would be no life on our planet.
Yet it is only in the last few years that scientists are realising how staggeringly high their numbers and
their significance, how close and manifold the connection really is between plants and animals and the
microbial midgets. Using advanced methods scientists are in the process of raising the curtain on a
performance that is not so much about sickness, but more about health, cooperation and the division
of labour.

With helpful bacteria to a healthy body
The human body is one of the most densely populated places on earth. Only
recently scientists discovered that helping digestion is one of the easiest duties for bacteria to fulfil. But
in our growingly hygienic world variety and quantity of bacteria, our invisible helpers, are dwindling.
The result: overweight, depression, allergies and other autoimmune diseases. Bernhard Kegels
describes knowledgeably and visibly how living together of human being and microbe is working,
which other bacterial hot spots there are in our body and how we can use the new knowledge for our
                    health.

book presents a good introduction to the subject of epigenetics.” Deutschlandfunk

Inheritance is human …
It has been heatedly and emotionally debated in universities and on bar stools: does the environment
and experiences affect a person, or solely his genes. The still young science of epigenetics now
shows that both are true.

plants and animals. Obstacles used to exist that obstructed the urge to travel.
Mountains, oceans, continents and deserts formed insurmountable barriers.

99 Days, 99 Double Pages - And in the End: A Healing Heart

What does romantic heartbreak have in common with drug withdrawal? Why do men behave
differently from women after a separation? And what does all this have to do with feminism?

A daily companion, a partner in an ongoing conversation (often with yourself) who will help
you to bring some order to your own thoughts and emotions. With daily prompts to develop
new ways of thinking, questions and lists to check off, fill in and check out.

Your heart is broken, your ego is in tatters. Romantic heartbreak hurts, terribly, at any age.
And regardless of whether the relationship lasted two months or eight years, heartbreak
recovery always follows the same pattern.
The first three months after a separation are the most important, because that’s when you
find your way back to yourself. The simplest method of developing a sense of your own self
during this difficult time is to ask yourself a lot of questions. That will re-structure your head
and your heart. Why was this love relationship not working? What was good about it, was
wasn’t so good about it? Why can’t I stop thinking about him? And in what way does a lot of
what occupies women’s minds after a failed relationship have nothing directly to do with them
but everything to do with societal expectations?
This book is thought-provoking. It has enough space for your own notes and answers to the
question of why our psyche doesn’t work as it should when it comes to matters of love and
romantic heartbreak. 99 days. Levelling with the reader. Written with humour and many
references to current research. You can only let go when you understand.

“In the end, only your life is left.”

It was planned as a trip along the Silk Road. It ended in the hands of the Pakistan Taliban.
For eight and a half months, the Swiss couple feared for their lives. Now they tell their
remarkable story. They take you to a region that is always present in the media, but which
almost nobody knows, to Waziristan in Pakistan, near the border to Afghanistan, the home
turf of the Taliban.
The nightmare began on 1 July 2011. Daniela Widmer and David Och are dragged from their
bus in Balochistan (Pakistan) by an armed commando and taken 500 kilometres to the north.
They soon realise that they are involved with Taliban warriors who want to obtain the release
of jihadists and keep the ransom money.
Their situation becomes even more hopeless over the next few months. The hostages ask
themselves if the Swiss government is negotiating with the Taliban for their release. And if
so, why are things not proceeding faster? The region is being systematically bombed every
day and the different prisons they are taken too are increasingly precarious. The prisoners try
to maintain discipline and a daily routine by doing jogging exercises, gymnastics and writing
diaries, even though their resistance is at an ebb and they are permanently suffering from
intestinal infections and malaria.
Their last hopes for successful negotiations are gone by winter, the cold is becoming
increasingly unbearable and their guards are becoming negligent. So David and Daniela
make a courageous decision.
On 15 March 2012 they manage to escape. Back to Switzerland. Back to their old lives. They
