The municipality is included in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Sila The MAB Programme develops the basis within the natural and social sciences for the rational and sustainable use and conservation of the resources of the biosphere and for the improvement of the overall relationship between people and their environment. It predicts the consequences of today’s actions on tomorrow’s world and thereby increases people’s ability to efficiently manage natural resources for the well-being of both human populations and the environment. By focusing on sites internationally recognized within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, the MAB Programme strives to: • identify and assess the changes in the biosphere resulting from human and natural activities and the effects of these changes on humans and the environment, in particular in the context of climate change; • study and compare the dynamic interrelationships between natural/near-natural ecosystems and socio-economic processes, in particular in the context of accelerated loss of biological and cultural diversity with unexpected consequences that impact the ability of ecosystems to continue to provide services critical for human well-being; • ensure basic human welfare and a liveable environment in the context of rapid urbanization and energy consumption as drivers of environmental change; • promote the exchange and transfer of knowledge on environmental problems and solutions, and to foster environmental education for sustainable development. It all started here by PASQUALE LOPETRONE Gioachimiti Study Center IN the Casali del Manco and on their mountain territories the young Gioacchino di Celico, later Gioacchino da Fiore, lived his childhood, his adolescence and part of his very first youth, until he was introduced by his father to the Royal court of Palermo to operate with the notaries of the king. He also returned as an adult to these places, the first time he returned from his journey in the Peleponnese with the notaries Peregrino and Santoro, to cure himself of a contracted illness, and a second time to meet the Father who gave him up for dead, after he had made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He paid particular attention to these territories even in the last years of his life, when, as Abate of Fiore, he began to buy lands, mills, oaks, vineyards, etc., near the Cardone, Fiumicello and Ispica streams, to establish two new important Florentine foundations, the first in Vico Turzano (today Borgo Partenope), around the church of San Nicola dei Bottuli, and the second in Canale di Pietrafitta, around the church of San Martino di Iove. The religious progress imagined by Gioacchino was addressed to the whole society of Christians, which invited to live as Christians practicing by example, wherever they were and in particular in his institutes active in the oratories and in the Florensian religious houses, which were the fulcrums of the model a congregative proposed by him, where everyone could live as a single body and a single soul, helping each other, and charitably, invoking God's mercy towards the future. Gioacchino da Fiore developed his religious project along the ancient road that led from Fiumefreddo to
Cosenza and from there it went up towards the springs of the river Crati and crossed over into the valley of the Arvo river, reaching Fiore, and from here it descended into the valley of the river Neto up to its mouth. To concretize his project, the Abbot Gioacchino da Fiore purchased and received donations from various inhabitants of the Casali del Manco, which take the form of places from his childhood. The same ones that the Abbot traveled as a Religious, preaching the construction of the kingdom of God on Earth, as a prelude to conquer eternal life, respecting the judgments of the God. Going through the earthly and spiritual paths of Joachim can help you immerse yourself in the light of his theology of history derived from the Gospels, the only lighthouse that leads to the Heavenly Jerusalem, a place where every Christian aspires to live for eternity. eGuide PEOPLE CULTURES ENVIRONMENT Territory and population THE Sila is a strange mountain. Probably the only one in the world. You reach the top after having covered a panoramic highway that from Paola, on the Tyrrhenian Sea, leads to Crotone, on the Ionian Sea, the visitor realizes that the mountain is not at all sharp, inhospitable, difficult to visit. On the contrary, it has soft contours, large expanses of green, forests where large immortal trees live. They have been there since the beginning of time and are determined to stay there until the end of time. Empathy with trees is immediate. They are good giants who watch over their land and welcome visitors with great enthusiasm, often wearing clothes with beautiful colors that change with the changing of the seasons and others that always have the same color indifferent to heat, cold, snow, the scorching sun. Visiting the Sila at any time of the year is an experience of the soul that immerses itself in a magical place. He immerses himself in a living organism that interfaces incredibly with the visitor. He guides him, cuddles him, offers him food, drinks, offers him shelter and gives him peace of mind. Casali del Manco is one of the 26 municipalities that are part of the Park Nazionale della Sila is one of the 71 that 16
eGuide belong to the Mab (the biosphere reserve) Unesco of the Sila. It is in the heart of the Park, in the heart of the most incredible and magical plateau in the world. The landscape (in the photo the colors of autumn) changes gently, often without the visitor realizing it. And so while you are crossing a beech forest, you may see a small forest of white firs before your eyes that could turn into oak or larch pine after a while, which could hide at their feet the delicious "rositi", a mushroom much sought after by Local "fungiari". A wisely protected nature that offers a beautiful landscape. A Nature that makes itself loved because it loves itself the visitor. The map of the municipal area of Casali del Manco 17
eGuide The magic of traveling back in time ▶ THE tourist-man is today studied in all the sauces. There is even a new profession, that of the tourism psychologist, who studies the behavior of those who want to travel, get informed, understand, have fun, taste new flavors in order to inform tour operators, restaurateurs, hoteliers on how to package their services, own tour packages. But there are those who escape all this. It is the tourist who seeks the lost worlds and wants to relive them. In Sila, in Casali del Manco there is one of the (now few) lost worlds of the Earth. It is the train of the Ferrovie della Calabria which reaches the Silvana Mansio station (the highest in Europe) starting from Camigliatello Silano. A brief example of the route you will be able to see it by clicking on the projector symbol at the top left. The train is a magical place, as is Silvana Mansio in winter and summer. The journey through the snow is, frankly, much more suggestive, but even the one that passes through one of the most beautiful, greenest and largest mountains in Europe is no joke. And then, if you have good muscles, you can also try to "reverse" the direction of the train manually. ▶ For the ticket purchase call the number +39 0984 0961 896 111 18
eGuide Life, Culture, Society Rita Pisano, “jeune fille de Calabre” Rita Pisano by Picasso. The design is kept in Turin in the private collection of art critic Carlo Muscetta. In the top left photo, Rita in a 1949 image LA "jeune fille de Calabre", Rita Pisano, in the drawing that Pablo Picasso (his is the definition) made in Rome during a dinner at the Piperno restaurant in Monte Cenci on October 30th 1949, seems the face of hope and rebirth. Especially if the face is compared to one of his most famous paintings, Guernica. The eyes of Rita, Picasso draws them like those of a girl aware of her responsibilities, but also resolved to take it upon herself. In Guernica, Picasso uses black, white and gray paint as an expression of pain and chaos, the shape and posture of bodies express protest, but not resignation. In the portrait of Rita the signs, the eyes, the posture express decision and lightness, the desire to fight, to live to the full a life that is worth it. As in Guernica there is only one thing: no form of resignation. In a few strokes the great genius "understands" perfectly how Rita was made. 19
eGuide The girl from Calabria who at the age of 23 takes charge of the tribulations of the Calabrian peasants, of the poor people of her region. For this reason the great artist draws its features as a symbol of rebirth. Rita Pisano was not given the honor due to her. The Calabrians should have reflected in it. They should Guernica have considered it an example. A symbol, as it had appeared to Picasso. Rita Pisano was mayor of Pedace uninterruptedly from 1966 to 1984, the year in which, at the age of 58, he died. Romano Pitaro, in the book “L’Ape furibonda" tells that Giuseppe De Santis, the director of "Riso Amaro", after having met her in Paris where he intervened at the Congress for Peace, «wanted her in the film and perhaps in the part of mondina would be she was more spontaneous than Silvana Mangano, but she refused as a "professional revolutionary". The love for party work "over the phantasmagoric flatteries of the film world" prevailed. When he returned to Cosenza - Pitaro writes - his companions used to tease her, telling of one of his entry to the world congress for the Peace with bare feet to be passed from peasant. She was joking, but although she had never been a peasant (she had worked in a shoemaker shop in Cosenza before joining the party), her curriculum of enfant prodige of southern politics already included the participation in the strike of the Malito chestnut gatherers who it was worth the first arrest. From a third of the harvest that was due to women, after the strike the new contract foresaw the division in half ». As mayor he was respected by his fellow citizens and his opponents. He never lowered his head, even in the face of the explosion by his beloved Italian communist party. The "guilt" they could not forgive was the diversity of his ideas compared to those of the Roman communist leaders. That of Rita Pisano is a story of a woman who did not give up her battles in favor of those who needed and who did not give up being a mother and wife. A story that deserves to be told to new generations. 20

eGuide Life, Culture, Society A brigand's life Papal troops intercept the brigands in a painting by Horace Vernet. Below, the home of Pietro Monaco in Serra Pedace AT Casali del Manco a brigand lived, Pietro Monaco, who was certainly a wicked criminal. He killed, he kidnapped, he blackmailed. Yet it was not always so. As a young man he participated with honor and courage in the battles of Garibaldi which he joined when the general crossed Calabria, fascinated by his promises of social justice. It was on his return home, to Serra Pedace, that he realized that those promises could not be kept. He was involved in a bad story of revenge, of betrayal offenses. He killed a fellow villager and took to the bush. First he joined with the brigand Palma, then he formed his own band of brigands. They made raids, robberies, they were feared. The situation worsened when his wife Maria killed his lover Teresa. Pietro was an irrepressible fury. He devoted himself to the to kidnappings. What caused the most excitement was consumed in Acre. He kidnapped 9 people including priests, nobles and a Sapri hero. A massive manhunt broke out. He was killed in an ambush, perhaps thanks to a "tip-off", on Christmas Eve of 1863. His wife Maria Oliverio also went into hiding. He became the first Calabrian brigantessa. He died in prison in Turin. 22
eGuide Life, Culture, Society The churches of Casali del Manco SURPRISINGLY Casali del Manco has a very high number of Catholic churches. We have decided to describe only a few of them by choosing from those that best represent the identity of a people. As is known, churches often guard the most intimate nature of the populations. Their impulses, their fears, their hopes are in the paintings, in the statues and even in the furnishings and in the hangings of a church. They also preserve artistic treasures of masters of painting, of sculptors, of great artisans almost always unknown to the official culture only because they have had the good fortune of not being born and lived where the Popes or kings lived. In the works jealously guarded by the churches of Casali del Manco there are many lives lived, so many lives generously spent, so many works donated without any profit and so many works made freely without conditionings by artists children of a people proud of themselves and proud of living their life to the fullest in an environment that is at the same time harsh and welcoming, but capable of expressing an intense humanity. Santi Pietro e Paolo IT is located in piazza Municipio in Pedace. It was built in the 16th century and was never completed. The interior has 3 naves and is rich in stuccos with a beautiful baroque chapel. In the church there are 2 splendid paintings attributed to the painter rendese Cristoforo Santanna. Chiesa dell’Assunta IT is in the central via Duomo in Spezzano Piccolo and is the mother church. Inside there are beautiful paintings and decorations by Cristoforo Santanna and oil paintings on wood by southern artists. Beautiful "la Cena", "La Circoncisione", "la Madonna del Rosario" and "S. Francesco di Paola ”. 25
eGuide Madonna delle Grazie IT is a small church located in Macchia di Spezzano Piccolo. The painting of the Virgin on the altar is worth the visit. San Donato Vescovo IT is the mother church of Serra Pedace located at number 1 of Via delle Veneri. It dates back to 1300 and in Romanesque style. Do not miss a wooden choir made at the end of the 1800s by the local artist Giuseppe Leonetti. Cappella Botte Donato IT is located on Monte Botte Donato at an altitude of 1900 meters. Fragile appearance, but strong temper. 26

At the same time two splendid paintings would also date, one (the Veronica) by an unknown author, the other (The Presentation at the temple) attributed to the painter Domenico Provieri. 27
eGuide Santa Marina Vergine THE splendid church of Santa Marina Vergine is located in Casole Bruzio. Its facade is the testimony of numerous restorations carried out in different styles that make it a unique work. In fact, it contains traces of Romanesque, Baroque and Neoclassical style. Its construction dates back to the fourteenth century, while the renovations were carried out in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in the fascist period. The interior is very interesting with paintings from the 14 stations of the Via Crucis, with a wooden choir and a pipe organ built in the late 1600s by the Neapolitan Giuseppe De Donato. 28
eGuide Walking The path of the Abbot Gioacchino da Fiore Barack Obama THE mountains of Casali del Manco are the same ones that inspired the thought of Gioacchino da Fiore when, after his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he wanted to retreat to the Sila woods to seek confirmation of his theories on the Ages of History. The life of the abbot is shrouded in mystery and, even today, an attempt is made to understand if his prophecy will come true. But if this were the case then the place of the Choice, the Celestial Jerusalem, would be precisely the soft esplanades and the soft silane peaks. The path that the Abbot made towards Jure Vetere, a flat area at the foot of Mount Botte Donato, crossed the entire Casali del Manco mountain. Among the secular trees, the springs of fresh and pure silan water, the sun hiding among the branches, the Abbot understood what he had imagined since the time of his pilgrimage to Jerusalem: the Third Age was about to begin. He called it the Holy Spirit after that of God and that of Jesus. According to Joachim, what the Holy Scriptures had predicted would finally come true. Soon the seventh seal of the Apocalypse would have been removed and would have brought social justice and peace to Earth. In the new world imagined by Joachim there was no place for war, but only for the Contemplation that would bring all people to Salvation. Today Joachim's writings are the subject of in-depth studies by 29
eGuide scientists all over the world, but to realize that something magical and mysterious pervades the abbot's places, it is enough to walk, without being scholars or scientists, in the woods of Casali del Manco. The same ones that the Abbot went through. You will be enveloped by emotions simply looking at the trees that Joachim looked at, following the same paths, hearing the same voices of the wood that the Abbot heard on his journey to Jure Vetere. No one can say exactly which path the abbot took. Surely he went up those mountains, he crossed those woods and the spell of that journey would be repeated for all those who, even for a short distance, should, responsibly, go into those mysterious and fascinating places that "open" the mind and make this clear which before was not. Joachim there understood that in the sacred scriptures there was a message of love on the part of God towards his People. A message that if it were listened to and applied by those who today decide the destinies of the world, the life of each human being would change radically. Joachim prophesied a united, compassionate, loving, just and free people. At the time of the fascist persecutions, in the spring of 1943, Pietro Ingrao, anti-fascist and leading exponent of the Italian Communist Party and future President of the Chamber of Deputies at the time of the Moro abduction, found hospitality. A short walk from Pratopiano, in Canale, he lived the last years of his existence, between prayer and meditation, in March 1202, the abbot Gioacchino da Fiore. The great Abbot was buried in the church of San Martino di Giove in the locality of Canale and here he remained for about 25 years, in this period he was a destination for The church of San Martino di Gioia in Canale is located in the Municipality of Pietrafitta pilgrimages and meetings between the followers of the abbot, then the body was transferred to San Giovanni in Fiore. According to the historian Domenico Martire the sacred building was founded in 700 by Greek monks. It then passed into the hands of the Benedictines and, perhaps, even of the Cistercians. In the year 1000 the church of San Martino was run by the archimandrite Sant’Ilarione who, together with 29 other monks, to escape the Saracen invasions, left for Chieti where he founded new farmhouses. In 1198 the Gioachimiti took possession of it. The body of the Abbot rests in the abbey of San Giovanni in Fiore dedicated to him. Finally, Pratopiano was among the places that in 1810 the King of Naples, Gioacchino Murat, with the aim of trying to stem poverty in that area, confiscated from the Church by giving civic uses to the most disadvantaged families. 34

It must be profaned with responsibility because in Sila it is Nature that dominates, not man. Sometimes it lets it go, lets it change, just don't overdo it. It is a magical place where only the brave with good heart have unlimited access. For them the silane forests give harmony and enchantment for the whole life of the ancient forests. The UNESCO Biosphere La Sila has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve (Man and biosphere - Mab). A vast area of the so- called "Core" falls within the Municipality of Casali del Manco. High mountains allow themselves to be reached through almost flat paths, water gushes from all sides, the soil offers mushrooms of all kinds and the forest fruits of various qualities. A splendid fauna populates the woods. The wolf, the porcupine, the black woodpecker, the fallow deer, the gecko, the tawny owl, the dormouse. And the beauty is that all this does not create disorder, but everything is harmonious. Here the law of Nature is fully respected. 35
