      “THE MESSENGER” May 2022
We extend a Warm Welcome to ALL - to visitors or anyone
worshipping with us for the first time. Please make yourselves
known to us. If you are with us on a Sunday morning, do join us
after the service in the Meeting Room for a cup of tea/coffee.

                           MAY
          Sweet celandines beam sunshine smiles
              From grassy verges to the sky;
             Above, half-hidden in the hedge,
A sparrow casts a knowing eye
Where lamb’s wool flutters on the fence,
A trophy for its twiggy nest
To cushion eggs of mottled blue,
Which lie beneath a downy breast.
Bright, thrusting buds have russet tips,
              Excited birds chirp frenzied song,
A feast awaits their probing beaks
For now the days grow warm and long.
Plump clouds drift high on wafting air
To shade, then clear the greening hill,
             While everywhere new life abounds;
God’s rainbow promise greets us still.
                          Andrea Davies

News and Updates
1. Special Birthdays this month! Many Congratulations to
Leah Smith who will be 100 years old on Thursday 12th May.
(Celebrate with Leah after the morning service on 8th, when
she will enjoy a chat with all her well-wishers, and cut her
Birthday Cake.) Happy Birthday, too, to Rozel Kneale who will
be 92 on 12th, and to Mildred Brown who will be 94 on 15th. To
all with birthdays this month, we extend our good wishes.
(Please make sure you let me know about any “special” birthdays –
those ending in ‘0’ or 90+ - as one or two have been missed
recently. Sorry! JR)

2. Concerns for Prayer – we continue to remember those of
our church family who are unwell, at home or in hospital, and
those no longer able to worship with us. Derek is able to
share our morning services via Zoom. Contact him (556117)
for the link if you would like to worship with us in this way.
3. Christian Aid Week – envelopes for your donations will be
available in church. The Churches Together Christian Aid
Week Service is at Chelsea Lane Baptist at 6pm on 15th May.
4. General Church Meeting – at this year’s annual meeting,
which takes place after the service on 22nd, we need to elect
our Church Treasurer, Stewards and Reps. to Church Council
for 2022-23. Please submit nominations (must be church
members), in writing, to Janice prior to the meeting. At least
two new Church Stewards and two new Reps are required.
5. May’s Mid-week Movie: “Julie and Julia” is based on the
real and contrasting lives of Julie Powell (Amy Adams) and
Julia Child (Meryl Streep). In the 1950s, Julia moved to Paris
and attended Le Cordon Bleu to learn French cooking. She was
inspired to work on a cookbook for American housewives,
which, despite many obstacles, was eventually published.
Julie Powell had an unpleasant job in a Lower Manhattan Call
Centre, and wanting to find a hobby she enjoyed, she decided
to cook every recipe in Julia’s book in one year while blogging
about it – but the going was far from plain sailing....
All welcome. Free admission and interval drinks.
6.Calling all Singers! Jubilate invite you to join them to sing
Roger Jones’ “Saints Alive!” on Sunday 10th July at 6pm. We
begin evening rehearsals on Tuesday 17th at 7.15pm (and we
continue to meet every Monday except Bank Holiday at 10am.)
7. Afghan Refugee Support Group – a meeting with refugee
families recently arrived in the area takes place at Church
House, 2-4pm on 8th May. We are invited to attend. (Books,
toys, good clothes and household items are also required.)
