I feel a deep warm fire within the heart of me. Gentle autumn mists cool the red gold Sun. Berries ripe and crimson tell me Summer's done. Autumn leaves are falling gently to the ground, but still that steady flame bright within me is found. Sue Watson. To Nicky and family, Dear School Community, Last night the Annual General Meeting was held for the Mansfield Rudolf Steiner School and Kindergarten Incorporated. The meeting was well attended by 31 association members. At the meeting, the Annual Report for 2021(access the report here MRSSK annual report 2021 or at menu in the footer of the school website) was tabled, and four vacant Governance Committee positions were filled by Tim Ross (re-elected), Scott Ersvaer (re-elected), Nicole Nye and Janette White. Together with current serving members Sarah Lieber and John Bowen, the Governance Committee will select the President, Deputy President, Secretary and Treasurer. We would like to thank former members, Catherine Yencken, Ingrid Ueno and Rosemary Brennan for their service on the Governance Committee during the last 12 months. Governance Committee Sarah Lieber John Bowen Tim Ross Scott Ersvaer Nicole Nye Janette White
I would like to thank the previous and incoming Governance Committee for their dedicated and professional approach. These volunteer positions carry significant responsibility and are vital to the success of our school. It is fantastic to have students back in the classroom, but we continue to manage student and staff absences in the wake of COVID-19 infections and increasing cases of influenza. In the case of staff, we are required to be flexible in covering absences. This requires changes to class timetables and activities from time to time. We ask that you continue to be conservative in the management of illness in your children and keep them home if they are unwell to lessen the impact on the wider community. Despite a backdrop of illness, there are still myriad wonderful things happening on and off-campus. The Year 10’s had a wonderful time sailing the Whitsundays, there was the joy of NAPLAN, solo concert rehearsals, performances by students at the AGM and Information Day, numerous school tours and interest for prospective students, a trip to the Melbourne Symphony, IB Information Night and of course all the engaging and inspiring lessons and activities that the students have as part of their regular day at Mansfield Steiner School. I hope this message finds you well. I look forward to seeing you at one of our solo concerts this week. MORNING STAR KINDERGARTEN We have been talking about our friend Crooked Gnome who likes to visit the Kinder whilst the warm rays from Father sun are still about. Crooked Gnome brings colours from the earth for us to dye our winter singlets ready to wear each day in the cooler months. Will the basket be waiting for the children to discover this coming week? Nimble fingers will practice fine motor skills as we begin our next handwork project with the Echidnas, sewing little stitches as diver dolphin dives in through the waves and out through the waves. The Honeybees will begin work on their Pom poms using the colours we see in nature as the seasons change. Sandi Valerio Morning Star Kindergarten ROSA MUNDI Look out, look out, Jack Frost is about! The Rosa Mundi garden has been full of wonder with our first autumn frost leaving behind frozen mud cupcakes in our outdoor kitchen, and icy lakes in our wheelbarrows! Rosa Mundi children have been delighting in the arrival of mushrooms all over the school, great and small, and singing songs of the fairies and gnomes who live among them. This week we will begin marking Reconciliation Action Week, hearing traditional Taungurung stories and joining the Primary students at a special assembly to acknowledge Mabo Day. Amy Burns Rosa Mundi Prep teacher HEAD LICE ALERT It has come to our attention that there is an outbreak of head lice in Early Childhood. Please examine your child’s hair for any of the signs of head lice and take the necessary steps to treat and eliminate the problem. Your child can return to school a day after treatment has commenced. 1. Check for lice – the whole family! 2. If lice or eggs (nits) are found treat hair with one of the many natural (or medicated) headlice treatments available from your local chemist or health shop. 3. Always apply the treatment on dry hair. 4. Remove lice and eggs by using metal headlice comb 5. Treat again once per week for 2-3 weeks. 6. Wash bed linen and clothes in warm water to prevent re-infestation. 7. You can use a shampoo with a few drops of Eucalyptus, Lavender and Teatree essential oils added as a preventative measure after successfully treating the hair. If all families are pro-active and we all work promptly to check and treat each week reinfestation will be minimal. Thank you. CLASS ONE Class One will begin a new Mathematics Main Lesson this week introducing counting patterns through stories. They will begin to discover ten friends and numbers within numbers such as 2 and 3 make 5 and so do 4 and 1. We welcome Felicia Gomez to our classroom as a student teacher for the next 4 weeks and look forward to working with her.
(Photo of our completed recorder bags hanging gaily in our window). Ariel Stava Class One teacher CLASS TWO Class Two have just finished their epic Celtic Dragon Myth Main Lesson. This week they begin a new Main Lesson hearing the adventures of Tomten, a contented gnome who lives deep in the forest with his friends Gozinta, Setza, Minus and Adi. We are also exploring the value of numbers, looking at the position each digit holds and how much that digit is then worth. Lou Pullar Class Two teacher CLASS THREE Class Three are working through challenging conditions with Suz absence due to COVID-19 isolation, to begin rehearsing their class play, Joseph the Dreamer. We have incorporated songs and dances from our earlier Creation and Hebrew Stories Main Lessons and have added some challenging floor patters to move the class on and off the stage. The two final weeks of rehearsal once Suz returns will be full of the class play and we look forward to performing it on June 2nd at 12pm and 7pm. (Photo from our excursion to Melbourne last week when we visited the Jewish Museum) Our final Main Lesson for Term 2 will move, for the first time towards breaking a whole number into smaller parts. We will begin with the concept of time - not only analog time but the concept of time over human history and earth history. Suz McKay/Clare Bennetts Class Three teacher/s CLASS FOUR Class Four had a great time at the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Museum last week. See some student journal entries below…. This week we start a new Main Lesson – our second on Fractions for the year. We will be looking at adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, probably the most complex Maths they have come across yet. We also have the Solo Concert on Wednesday which students have been busily practicing for. Jacinta Walker Class Four teacher On Thursday Classes 3,4,5 and 6 travelled to Melbourne to see the MSO play Carnival of The Animals. It was amazing. They didn’t just play music, they also used puppets to act out the whole thing. There were turtles, tigers, koalas and lots of other animals. My favourite animal was the koala. Audrey It was an amazing effort because they didn’t just have the MSO playing – they also had puppeteers acting out Australian animals. The orchestra sounded incredible with only approximately thirty people playing instruments. The show went for about 45 minutes and we enjoyed every minute of it. It was amazing to hear the bits where it got loud when it was dangerous, intense or if there were scary bits, or softly for peaceful, and upbeat for happy and exciting. Someone cut out 2500 fish just for the under-water scene. Lara It was so cool, and they didn’t just play violin, viola and cello – they did a puppet play. My favourite animal was either the elephant or the wolf or the koala. After the MSO we went to the Melbourne Museum to look at the bugs and beetles. It smelt awful but it was cool because there were live spiders. Then we went to Victoria Market. We were going to the donut shop, but they were sold out, so we got
some churros instead. Hamish After the MSO Class 3 went to the Jewish temple, Class 5 went to the Hare Krishna temple, Class 6 did city stuff (looked at shops and street art) and Class 4 went to the Museum to see big bugs like a Mexican salmon pink tarantula, dung beetles, ants (and lots of ‘em), and heaps of stick insects. It was awesome!! Class four also went to the Victoria Market and there were stinky durians. There was a doughnut store, but it was closed so we got churros and chocolate sauce. On the way back Class 4 sang ABC twinkle and Baby Shark. Callum CLASS FIVE Class Five has continued to hear the stories of Ancient India from various sources, such as the Bhagavad Gita. Our trip to Melbourne, which included a visit to the Hare Krishna Temple, was a wonderful experience that brought the stories we have heard from our Ancient India Main Lesson to the real world. The students were fortunate to be in the temple while they were worshiping the deities and partook in the chanting of a Hare Krishna mantra. We were provided a healthy and delicious (although slightly spicy) meal and were fortunate enough to have a tour with one of the monks, Sevya. The students will be performing their solo concerts this week and are busily practicing for the concert. Michael Brittain Class Five teacher CLASS SIX We all had a wonderful day in Melbourne last week watching the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performance of the Carnival of Animals. After the performance we wandered over to Fed Square for a tour then walked up Hosier Lane to look at some street art followed by a visit to St Paul’s Cathedral to observe the Gaia planet exhibition by Luke Jerram. The class also learnt about the history of the church including the building, mosaics and the magnificent organ. We then wandered up to the Bourke St Mall, Royal Arcade and then onto Melbourne Central with a visit to Lego Land. A big congratulations to all the Class Six participants in the local Primary schools cross-country run last week. We had 5 place getters out of 11 runners and many others close on their heels. Well done! Linda Sampson Class Six teacher HEALTH AND HYGIENE HEALTH AND HYGIENE The following measures now apply. Implementation of the school Covid-Safe Management Plan • Student drop-off and pick-up is encouraged be out the front of the school and at the waiting tree turning circle. • Visitors - all visitors must check-in at the office (QR Codes no longer required) • Volunteers and those performing work on school sites (both inside and outdoors) must have had at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine or have a valid medical exception (3 doses from 25/3/22). • Social distancing among adults (and students where possible) • Regular hand washing/sanitising • Use of air purifiers • Maximise ventilation of indoor spaces • Minimising indoor group gatherings • Regular Cleaning • Daily Principal briefing via Sentral (as required) RAPID ANTIGEN TESTING Free rapid antigen tests will be made available for all staff and students (2 per week, per student). Rapid antigen testing is voluntary but highly recommended by the school. If you are choosing to monitor your children for COVID-19 through regular testing, we suggest doing this on Monday and Thursday morning. Any person who is symptomatic must test immediately. The school must be informed of any positive results immediately. We do not need to be informed about negative results. Do not attend school. Get tested if you have not done so. If you or your child tests positive log your result and seek advice here https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/rapid-antigen-tests. Inform the Mansfield Steiner School office via phone or email.
SECONDARY WEDNESDAY MORNING RUN As a part of our preparation for the Cross Country this term, and to keep our bodies active and moving as we head into winter, we will be running every Wednesday morning. The aim is to be able to run consistently for up to 20 minutes. It breaks up the week’s main lesson classes and is helpful for both our brains and bodies. The emphasis is not on competition or logging times or distances, simply on being able to run for 20 minutes. The course is on the footpath up to Monkey Gully Rd and then turning around after 10mins to then run back again. Those who make it to the end turnaround point will enjoy a 3.8km run. All students have been reminded to wear activewear on Wednesdays. Kate Hood Head of Secondary- Deputy Principal SECONDARY YEAR 7 Year 7 have been introduced to Rene Decartes and the Cartesian Plane in the beginning of this Main Lesson called Number and Algebra. We have plotted various points on the plane and talked about the many and varied uses of this gridding system used throughout the world, from mapping the earth to playing battleships with our friends. Moving forward we will explore negative numbers, gradient, and discover the rule for a straight line. Kate Hood Head of Secondary- Deputy Principal Main Lesson teacher SECONDARY YEAR 8 Year 8 take the plunge into Shakespeare for an extended Main Lesson, studying the playwright's life and career in depth. This week has begun with looking at The Globe Theatre and how it came to be, taking a virtual tour to appreciate the history behind the playhouse. Students have also begun rehearsing for their own performance of 'The Taming of the Shrew', one of Shakespeare's popular comedies with a storyline relevant to their stage of development. It's a long road ahead but the results will be spectacular! Nicholas Koschitzke Main Lesson teacher
SECONDARY YEAR 9 In this age of high technological advancement, where more of than not things just work, it is easy to take for granted – or forget entirely – how far modern society has progressed over the space of two hundred years. In Year 9, we take the opportunity to step back into the advent of industrial development and the radical changes that occurred during the height of the Industrial Revolution. Students spent last week learning about inventions which shaped the way that manufacturing, transportation, textiles, and farming functioned in 19th century Great Britain. This week, we are delving into the sociopolitical changes that accompanied this, whilst also choosing an element of technology used in everyday 21st century life to complete a “reverse evolution” timeline profile on said item, exploring how far into the industrial past the roots of this invention reach. Ness Hinneberg Main Lesson teacher SECONDARY YEAR 10 CULTURAL EXCHANGE Whitsunday Sunset.... The Year 10’s have been having an awesome time in the Whitsunday’s, snorkeling, hiking, and of course, learning how to sail. Their skipper, Tom, was with the school last year and he is a fantastic, positive man that has given the students significant responsibility and guidance in terms of learning to sail the mighty ‘PRIMA’. They have headed off on a croc tour today and seen some big animals lurking in the dark water. They have four more days on the boat before heading on to their host families and the Cairns Hinterland Steiner School. No doubt they will be ready for some time apart after a long time in very close quarters. Glenn Hood Principal IB Writing This term in IB we are very keenly focusing on our writing. After shorter tasks, as well as a great deal of oral sharing and presenting in Term 1, we are turning more intently toward honing our skills in building extended written pieces. Effective language choices and the fluidity of our thoughts on the page are aspects of written work the Year 11’s are paying particular attention to in their submissions each week. This matches a focus on language and how it functions in Theory of Knowledge, the building of extended analytical essays in Literature and constructing Paper 2 responses to conceptual questions in Anthropology. Through a combination of studying Chloe Hooper’s Tall Man, Fugard Athol’s Sizwe Bansi is Dead in Literature and Sidney Mintz’ Sweetness and Power we are examining the legacies of colonisation and the resulting systems of oppression for different peoples: Australia, South Africa, parts of the Caribbean. These studies require us to closely consider how the position of the individual telling the story affects how the information is told and received. We are comparing the nature of voices coming from positions of from relative privilege, outside a particular lived experience of oppression, versus those targeted by oppressive social, political and economic policies for generations. Leith Pierce IB Teacher MUSIC Our Primary classes Three to Six enjoyed a wonderful trip to Melbourne to see the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra performing The Carnival of the Animals. The students were impressed with seeing a live orchestra playing beautiful music. Solo concerts are this week, Wednesday 25 May for students from Classes 3 & 4 and on Thursday the 26 May for students from Classes 5 & 6. Both concerts begin at 7pm in Melliodora Hall. Celeste Cleason Music Coordinator FROM GARDEN TO PLATE
Lovely cooking class with the Class Two today. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking the little basket out to the kitchen garden to gather the greens for their pizza picture. They collected almost all of the ingredients including edible flowers to create it. Squeals of "This is the most beautiful pizza I've ever seen" and "Can I please have the corner with the window on it!" They all went off to play with full bellies and the cooks for the day felt very proud of themselves. Karen Warring Cooking Coordinator LIBRARY DAYS Tuesday: Class 5, Class 3, Class 1 Wednesday: Class 2, Class 4, Class 6 and Prep.
