LEADERSHIP LENT Fr. Tollefson Prepares for Sabbatical In the Bible, mention is made of “the Sabbath”: on the seventh day God rested from all of his work in creating the universe. The Sabbath is a time to worship God, to rest in Him, and to contemplate. It is a time to take time to look back and see where one has been, to give thanks for those blessings and challenges, and thereby to gather strength for the journey that is ahead. Many, many changes have happened in our parish and in my personal life here at St. Hubert in the past 10 years: both of my parents died, I sold my family home and pos- sessions, and have suffered in various ways, just as we all do. I am so very grateful for your love and care during these difficult times. It is the custom of Christian clergy to go on a “Sabbath” of their own, called a “Sab- batical,” ideally, as laid out in the Bible and in Church practice, every seven years. Of Fr. Rolf Tollefson, Pastor course, this rarely happens. I have not had a sabbatical in twenty years of priesthood. It is time for one. Notably, this is not a “leave of absence,” but a sabbatical. Recently, I applied for and was approved for a sabbatical by Archbishop Hebda. The dates of my sabbatical are April 18, 2022 through August 18, 2022. I will remain pas- tor of St. Hubert, but I will not be here, nor will I be checking or responding to emails. So, what will I do during that time? Slot machine ministry in Vegas? Endless Star Trek conventions? What? The Church sees a sabbatical as a time of study, rest, human connection, and prayer. Accordingly, I put my own program together of personal refreshment, a program that I believe will help me be refreshed and have renewed zeal for my work here at St. Hubert. Intellectually, I desire to study best practices for men’s ministry and fatherhood, a criti- cal issue in our Church and in our world today as fatherlessness is killing civilization as we know it. I will be studying at the University of Cambridge in England at Ridley Hall, an Anglican seminary in the evangelical tradition. I chose to study in England because 4 halo –October 2021
LEADERSHIP music and choral music help me greatly to be refreshed and renewed, and Cambridge is an international center of outstanding choral music. (Think Christmas Eve Lessons and Carols from King’s College, Cambridge.) But I also chose to go to Europe for my sabbatical in order to do genealogical research in England and Germany. Though my ridiculously Norwegian name may sound like “I will go to see I just got off the boat from Oslo, in addition to being Norwegian, I am actually also the tulips blossom German (with a “slice” of Swiss), Scottish, English, and Irish. My family research on ancestry.com has been fascinating and I will journey to some of the hometowns of my in the Netherlands ancestors as part of my sabbatical. and journey to the As I am a big fan of art museums and nature, I will go to see the tulips blossom in the Netherlands and journey to the town of Saint-Hubert in Belgium, where the body of town of St. Hubert once lay. Stay tuned for a short video to be posted on our website when I make it there—God willing. Thank God for Google Translate!) I will also reconnect with a friend from seminary who is a priest serving in Paris at Sacre Coeur. I also hope to make connections in Milan in Italy with fellow adherents to the ecclesial movement within the Catholic Church called “Communion and Liberation” and pray at the tomb of the founder of this Movement, Fr. Luigi Giussani. I hope to pray at my patron saint/confirmation saint, St. Augustine’s tomb in Pavia, just to the south of Milan. If all goes according to plan, I will also study in the Holy Land. My sabbatical will conclude in August with some time at a cabin in northern Minnesota where I will be doing some work and some writing, reflecting, and praying. A temporary parochial administrator, Fr. Doug Ebert, a now-retired priest, former pas- tor of Guardian Angels in Chaska and of St. John Neumann in Eagan, will be “pastor” in my absence, as I will be unable to communicate with you when I am gone. He is a former pilot of Northwest Airlines and a fine man and priest. Of course, all of this is contingent on the latest COVID trends…please pray that Europe is open for business come spring. halo –October 2021 5
FEATURE St. Hubert Staff Updates Introducing Nathan Lunsford, Director of Discipleship We are excited to welcome Nathan Lunsford to St. Hubert as our new Director of Discipleship! Na- than, who lives with his wife in St. Paul, comes to St. Hubert with a wealth of experience in ministry and theological education. As an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas, he studied Theolo- gy with an emphasis on lay ministry. Both during and after his time at St. Thomas, Nathan served as a youth formation minister for several years, before deciding to continue his theological training at Marquette University, where he earned an MA in Theology and completed additional, doctorate-lev- el coursework. During his time at Marquette, Nathan also served as a residence hall minister for Marquette’s campus ministry department and taught in the Theology department as adjunct fac- ulty. Feeling called to share his gifts in a ministry setting, Nathan is excited to serve as St. Hubert’s Director of Discipleship and is looking forward to getting to know the people of this parish. Introducing Cathie Baier, Associate Director of Discipleship for Elementary Catechesis We are excited to introduce our new Associate Director of Discipleship for Elementary Catechesis, Cathie Baier! Cathie comes to St. Hubert from Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in Bloomington. She lives in Bloomington with her husband Kevin, and five of her six children. She’s been working in various areas of discipleship since 2013 when she ran VBS, K-8 Religious Education, and Sacrament Preparation at Holy Family Catholic Church in St. Louis Park. She started working at Nativity of Mary in 2015 doing VBS, PreK-8 Faith Formation, and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She is excited to meet all the volunteers and families as we kick off this year of discipleship. Diane Potts, Pastoral Minister, Announces Retirement It is with much happiness (and sadness) that I share that I am retiring on October 15. I will be mov- ing on to the next phase of my life to spend more time with family in North Dakota. I have had a wonderful experience working with all of you over the past 22 years. When I first started my career at St. Hubert in 1999, I was responsible for the Sunday School program. This quickly ex- panded to Elementary Faith Formation (grades one through five) after the departure of the director of the program. In 2007, the position of Pastoral Minister became available and I accepted the chal- lenge. I have been working with the seniors of the community along with prayer shawl, card ministry, homebound ministry and other pastoral care activities ever since. It has truly been a blessing to get to know everyone and share in your many gifts along the way. St. Hubert parish been my second family and I really appreciate each and every one of you for being a part of my life. God has blessed me with so many wonderful St. Hubert friends and I will miss all of you. 6 halo –October 2021
FEATURE Introducing The Learning Commons By Shannon Riegert, Learning Commons Specialist designed especially with their needs and wants in mind. Adding some fun new things for the entire school community to look forward to brings a joy to the school that is much deserved. A few of the things we are happily working to incorporate in the space are: Changing the name of the space and program from the library to the Learning Commons This reflects how we are not just providing a collection of books for our readers, but we are incorporating scheduled class times for each homeroom class Pre-K through eighth grade. Our time will be used to enhance the amazing learning that happens in We are excited to announce some changes to our library pro- each and every class. gram here at St. Hubert Catholic School. Focusing on supporting the needs of our 21st century learners We were hard at work this summer changing the layout of the with enhanced research skills and varied presentation styles library. We removed a wall that previously divided the space. and any project that needs just a little extra support With that came patching the floor and a fresh coat of paint. The ultimate purpose of these changes is to incorporate even deeper the main tenets of the mission of our school: to teach as Jesus did within the con- text of the teachings of the Catholic Church, educate the whole child and build a spiritual foundation that will last a lifetime. The way we can do this is by providing a hub of learning for our students. Our library program is unique to school settings because we supplement our religion curriculum with books on our Catholic faith. There is also a clearly marked section of our space with faith-centered books for student check out. After the last few years of feeling separated from each other due to Covid, it feels great to be able to start the school year back together, in person and having a designated space in the building for students and teachers to connect and collaborate. This year feels like a perfect time to offer the students an area 8 halo –October 2021
Committing to fostering a love of reading for all our students regardless of their reading levels and providing students with access to books and stories to support their academic, spiritual, and emotional growth Seemingly with a cell phone in every pocket, we aim to redirect our students’ understanding of reading from something to check off a list or as a task to complete to instead a gift we give ourselves. Studies have shown that reading for pleasure helps reduce anxiety in students and we are working to promote healthy, lifelong habits. Curating a book collection to support all readers and curriculum needs As the book collection was reorganized in the redesigned space, we developed a plan of purchasing and accumulating new books for the future of the Learning Commons. Having nonfiction books in print to supplement a unit of study in the classroom is helpful to teachers and students. When learning can be expanded beyond a lesson into literature or an area of interest, knowledge can be self- directed, and that is exciting to see as an educator and a parent. We can now offer new and anticipated books that they are excited to read. Including the students in the process In the spring, a survey was sent out to the upcoming seventh and eighth grade students asking them what they wanted to see in the space and book recom- mendations they had for the collection. Including their opinions and feelings in the decisions was helpful because ultimately the space is for them and we wanted to empower them to use their voice for changes they want to see in their world. The hope is that they feel heard and empowered. When overwhelmingly they wrote they wanted a couch to sit and read on, they got it! We are excited to see how they use the space and how it changes with what they let us know they want and need. At a time when so much feels that it has been taken from our students, the Learning Commons is something we could give them and we are so hopeful that the space grows with the students and adapts with their needs. halo –October 2021 9
NEW STAFF Welcome New SHS Staff Kathleen Ausman, Seventh & Eighth Grade Language Arts I am very thankful to have the opportunity to return to St. Hubert Catholic School this year as the seventh through eighth grade Language Arts teacher. I previously taught at St. Hubert during the 2016-2018 school years until my youngest child was born. Then I stayed home for a couple years to care for my young children who were four years old, three years old, and a newborn at the time. Prior to joining the faculty at St. Hubert in 2016, I was the sixth through eighth grade Language Arts teacher at St. Helena Catholic School in Minneapolis. Last school year, I covered a year-long, long-term substitute position in seventh and eighth grade Language Arts at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Savage. This year will be my ninth year of teaching Language Arts in a middle school setting. I especially love studying Shakespeare, discussing full-class novels, and teaching writing at this level. Growing up in Wisconsin in a family of six, I am the oldest of four girls. I attended Catholic schools throughout my education and was blessed to have had many incredible, faith-filled teachers who inspired me to pursue the same path. I came to the Twin Cities to complete my undergraduate degree and earn my teaching license at the University of Saint Thomas. Following graduation, I earned my secondary teaching license in 2011 and have lived in Minnesota ever since. My husband and I have been married for nine years and have been blessed with three children who will also be St. Hubert students this year: a daughter in second grade, a son in first grade, and a son in preschool. I am grateful that my children will be able to accompany me at St. Hubert this year, and I am excited for all the opportunities that await them, both academically and in their continuing faith formation. In my free time I love to read books for myself and with my children, try to bake new recipes, sing at my parish, spend time outdoors (preferably near a lake), and spend quality time with my family. Julie Katz, Sixth Grade Teacher My name is Julie Katz and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work at St. Hubert Catholic School. I am the new sixth grade teacher surrounded by an amazing group of educators. As an alumna of St. Hubert Catholic School, I wanted my children to experience the beautifully supportive community that we have. My husband, Lou and I have four children at SHCS: Liam, Lydia, and Lillian in seventh grade and Luke in third grade. It is truly amazing how God shows us where he wants us to be. I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 13 years, and did not know that I would be teaching this year. However, I thought if they need- ed help somewhere I would offer. St. Hubert took me up on my offer! With a background in education, I taught kindergarten in Florida for four years before having children. I have a BA in Spanish from the University of Minnesota and a Masters in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my family and my dog, Lucy. I am an avid tennis player and I enjoy traveling every- where. There is so much to see, and we have only one life to live! 10 h a l o – O c t o b e r 2 0 2 1
NEW STAFF Welcome New SHS Staff Susie Hiemenz, Second Grade Teacher My name is Susie Hiemenz and I am delighted to be a part of St. Hubert Catholic School this year teaching second grade! I have two brothers, two sisters, and two black cats! I named them Fran- cis and Clare after St. Francis and St. Clare who were friends in real life…unlike my two kitties!! I go to Lake Superior every summer with dear friends. It is my favorite spot on earth! I attended St. Ben’s for my undergraduate degree and St. Thomas for my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Theology. My master’s thesis was on differentiation in the mixed ability classroom. I am a certified Orton Gillingham tutor for primary and intermediate grades. The Orton Gillingham approach is specifically designed to support struggling readers, including dyslexic students. For 19 years I worked at Our Lady of Grace in Edina where I taught fifth, third, and second grade. I taught second grade for six years at Holy Spirit in St. Paul and second grade for one year at Sha- kopee Area Catholic Schools. Now I am thrilled to be joining this wonderful St. Hubert community. I love teaching, and second grade is my favorite because I get to teach the sacraments to the students. Being able to experience the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion with my students is one of my greatest joys as a teacher! I consider it an honor. I am especially excited this year because it marks the first time in my career when I will teach the child of a former student I had while working at Our Lady of Grace! Peter Benson, Fifth Grade Teacher Minnesota for me has always been home for me! I attended Holy Name of Jesus in Wayzata for elementary school and went onto Wayzata public schools for middle and high school. After high school, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Saint John’s Univer- sity. For the past four years I have been teaching third grade and second grade at Glen Lake Elementary in Minnetonka, MN. Additionally, I coach Junior Varsity Girls Hockey in Eden Prairie, MN. During my free time I play townball in nearby Carver, MN for the Carver Black Sox. Our team has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years and we even made it to the Minnesota Amatuer Baseball State tournament hosted in Waconia, Chaska, and Hamburg. I also enjoy spending time with my family, including my four sisters, my nephew Henry (five) and my nieces Rose (three) and Rachel (one). Furthermore, I love to camp in the summer months up along the North Shore, especially in the little town of Finland, MN. My family and I make at least one trip up there each year and I wouldn’t miss it for anything! Everyone at St. Hubert has been incredibly welcoming to me so far and I am very excited to join the St. Hubert Catholic Communi- ty! I look forward to making lasting connections with students and staff alike. halo –October 2021 11
STAFF UPDATES St. Hubert has a New Resource Teacher! By Jen Laaksonen I am really looking forward to joining St. Hubert Catholic School this year as a resource teacher! As a resource teacher, I will provide elementary, small group literacy instruction to support aca- demic success. I’ll be working with small groups in literacy intervention and literacy enrichment. I grew up just outside Dallas, Texas and attended the University of Denver, double majoring in International Studies and Geography. While at the University of Denver, I played volleyball for the Pioneers and met my husband, Antti. We got married in Denver and moved to Boston, Prov- idence, Raleigh, Denver, Minnesota, Finland, and Switzerland before finally settling in Minnesota in 2010. After being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, I decided to pursue my passion for teach- ing and added an Elementary Education degree with a minor in Pre-Primary to my resume. For the past seven years, I have been a second-grade teacher at Cologne Academy in Cologne, MN. We live in Victoria and have three children: Annika, who just graduated from the University of Minnesota this spring, Thomas, (St. Hubert alumnus) a sophomore at Holy Family, and Sonja, (St. Hubert alumna) a freshman at Holy Family. We have two dogs, Max and Opie, who keep us on our toes. In my free time I enjoy spending time with family and friends, watching my children play sports, and reading, traveling, and being outdoors in God’s beautiful creation. Meet our New Spanish Teacher! By Maria A. Echeverria Hi, my name is Maria A. Echeverria. I was born in Quito, Ecuador where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Theology and an Associate in Bilingual Secretarial Science. I have worked in the field of education from Ecuador and have traveled around South Amer- ica giving conferences, and teaching workshops. However, my adventure as a Spanish teacher began when I moved to the United States in 2010. I am married to a wonderful American man named Matthew who brought me to my new home. Since then, I started my beautiful and challenging career teaching my first language, which I enjoy very much and is one of my passions. I have experience teaching Spanish from infants to adults. I love teaching about my culture, and it is very special when I meet people who like to learn about it. I currently live in Chanhassen with my husband Matthew and my two dogs Nicolas and Bianca. I enjoy walking with my dogs, exploring new places with my husband, watching movies, dancing Zumba, listening to music, and hanging out with my friends in my free time. I am very excited to be a part of the St. Hubert community this year as the middle school Spanish teacher. 12 h a l o – O c t o b e r 2 0 2 1
