MARCH 2021 | VOL. ONE ISH. NINE The League Letter A Monthly Letter From Amber Hubbs Golegos President Of The Junior League of Evanston- North Shore A NOTE FROM THE WHAT'S INSIDE PRESIDENT THIS ISSUE: Dear JLE-NS Members, A Note From The President February Highlights Welcome to March! As the sun is shining, temperatures warm up, snow melts and Member In The Spotlight spring flowers start to appear there is renewed hope in the air. As a training Important Dates organization, we offer our members a wide variety of training opportunities including those offered by the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). I was so pleased by the enthusiasm of our leadership team to attend the annual Winter Leadership conference which was held virtually this year on February 27, 2021. AJLI reported that they had 1,900 participants at Winter Leadership, which was a record number of attendees. March is Women's History Month. Founded in 1901 by Mary Harriman, The Junior League has had a profound effect on what it means to live in modern society. The League experience cultivates women into thoughtful and seasoned leaders and teaches them how to take on the toughest problems of the day and work collaboratively with all involved to arrive at pragmatic and sustainable solutions that have enhanced the quality of life in our culture. The Junior League of Evanston - North Shore also has a rich history. Founded in 1924, JLE-NS has been an influential organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. After their acceptance into AJLI, the first President of JLE-NS was Dorothy Mason. Leading 29 members, the JLE-NS worked hard and soon made a niche for themselves in the welfare work of the community. They used their own cars and gathered up mother’s milk for the The Cradle. Over the years membership grew as well as the JLE-NS's influence on the community. Though considered a small League of 213 members today, we have a big impact! At our virtual March 17, 2021 GMM, we will share more details about our rich League history. I encourage members to check out the historical archives provided by AJLI which can be found on the website (https://www.ajli.org -> Who We Are -> Legacy). I also invite you to look at our Members only Facebook page and pass on "League Legacy" by sharing stories of the women (Moms, sisters, friends) who impacted you through the Junior League. Best, Amber Hubbs Golegos President, Junior League of Evanston - North Shore Feedback or ideas? I would love to hear from you, please don't hesitate to reach out to me anytime Page 1 (amber.hubbs@hotmail.com). Thank you for your time and dedication to our league.
FEBRUARY HIGHLIGHTS Thrift House Member Shopping Day Thank you to our members that joined us at Thrift House Junior League of Evanston-North Shore for our Member Shopping Day on Saturday, February 6, 2021. We appreciated the opportunity to see each other in person while getting some great deals, including our new reusable shopping bags! Stay tuned to our page for updates on when our Thrift House will reopen to the public. February GMM On Wednesday, February 17, 2021 we held our February GMM. We celebrated Black History Month and hosted guest speaker, Tiffany Blackman from the Council of Junior Leagues regarding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). She is the founder and first acting President of the AJLI Women of Color Affinity group which was established in 2017. Thank you to all who were able to join. Virtual Cook Along with Gale Gand Thank you to everyone that attended the virtual Cook Along with Chef Gale Gand on Saturday, February 20, 2021. It was a fun-filled evening where members could test their culinary skills. We had the pleasure of making a few of Gale's favorite recipes including Kris’ Cosmo, Asparagus and Capocollo Puff Pastry Bundles, and a Green Pea and Garlic Hummus. Between courses we auctioned off gourmet cooking items which included a Barilla gift basket, Cole & Mason Duo Oil & Vinegar Pourer and Derwent Stainless Steel Salt and Pepper Mills gift set, and a Sur La Table 7-Piece Bakeware Set. Thank you to those who made generous donations, solicited auction items, and volunteered their time to help make the evening a huge success. We raised over $500 and the Trivia Night committee Chairwomen, Patty Lea and Beth Weissmueller are truly grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm you all showed toward our fundraiser and the League at large. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT JENNIFER LUCZKOWIAK New Member Chair - Active " I just love inviting friends to learn about the work we are doing!” What's your "why" for being in the Junior League? I joined the League because I had been living in California for 7 years and had just moved back. I wanted to meet other women who like to have fun and give back to the community. How many years have you been in the JLE-NS? I joined the League in 2011, so I've been here for 10 years! What has been one of your favorite placements? My favorite placement in the League has probably been New Member Recruiting. I've had the opportunity to serve in that capacity twice and I just love inviting friends to learn about the work we are doing and talk to them about how they can benefit from the League. What is one of your favorite JLE-NS memories? One of my favorite JLE-NS memories is when I was a new member and had our entire new member class (about 20 women) over to my house to package gifts for our Baby Steps program. I was only about 3 weeks postpartum (thanks to my son being 9 days late!) and all of the women were so amazing and kind. I wonder if they spent more time taking care of me or actually packaging gifts. Tell us about yourself: I am a civil legal aid attorney and Director of Development at Prairie State Legal Services. Additionally, I am a mom of three, with two sons (11yo and 8yo) and a daughter (5yo). We've lived in Highland Park for almost 10 years. Besides the League, I serve as Vice President of the Association of Women Attorneys of Lake County and I am a member of the Illinois State Bar Association's Women & the Law Committee. I also serve on Kappa Delta's House Corporation Board at Northwestern University and I serve on the board of directors for HP Community Early Learning Center. I went to Northwestern University for my undergraduate studies and UC Hastings College of Law for law school. If you would like to be the next Member In The Spotlight, please attend our next GMM meeting on 3/17 and your name could be randomly selected as the next member featured! Page 3
