The Irish Examiner
Suicide and Ireland
Winner in the Public Health category, the Irish Examiner’s ‘Suicide and Ireland’ project also won ‘An Duais Mhór’, the overall trophy.

The project involved a 20-page broadsheet supplement, which took three months to compile, detailing the personal stories, pain and hope
behind some of the 527 deaths by suicide registered last year.

On top of this, a 32-page information booklet written by professionals offering advice and support to those feeling suicidal or affected by
suicide was also distributed free with the newspaper. An additional 200,000 copies were then distributed by the national suicide support
group Console and the community support network RAPID, with thousands more supplied to schools, youth groups, the HSE and Amnesty
International.

Commenting on the project, Amnesty’s Justin Moran said he was literally ‘rooted to the spot’ by the front page of the newspaper and by the
content inside. Member of the judging panel Stephen McMahon, CEO of the Irish Patients Association, said the paper’s front page brought
tears to his eyes, and the project overall showed a “deep understanding and commitment by an editorial and journalistic team that has done
our society a great service”. The judges felt the project showed a commitment ‘above and beyond’ the normal call of duty of a commercial
enterprise in tackling such an important area of public health in Ireland — particularly for our youth.

                                                                        Judges
The judging panel this year included: Dr Ellen O’Sullivan, Consultant Anaesthetist, St James’s Hospital; Dr Dermot Power, Consultant Geriatrician, Mater
Misericordiae University Hospital; Mr Seán Davis, President of the Pharmaceutical Managers’ Institute of Ireland and General Manager, Ferring Pharmaceuticals; Mr
Dave Shanahan, Head of Global Life Sciences, IDA Ireland; Industry expert Mr John MacDonald; and Mr Stephen McMahon, CEO, Irish Patients Association.
