THE HONG KONG INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED SECRETARIES 香港特許秘書公會 e-Update issue 223 | 1 March 2019 INSTITUTE NEWS Mark your diary for ACRU 2019 The HKICS 20th Annual Corporate and Regulatory Update (ACRU 2019) which brings together prominent speakers from the regulatory bodies in Hong Kong: the Companies Registry, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission will be held at The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, 5 June 2019. Details will be announced soon on the HKICS’s website: www.hkics.org.hk. Invitation to participate in the HKICS survey on the state of governance HKICS believes that it is critical to the long-term success of Hong Kong that Hong Kong is seen as a well-governed market with increasing integration with Mainland China, including under the Hong Kong- Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Connects. It is in this context that HKICS is seeking to find out the State of Governance on a variety of governance related topics - to gauge where we are, and where we need to go - in terms of the overall governance practices in Hong Kong. The survey will be closed on Monday, 18 March 2019 by noon. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey HERE and share it to your peers, colleagues and friends. All responses will be kept confidential and on anonymous basis. HKICS interviewed by JobsDB Institute Past President and Company Secretary of Lippo Limited Dr Davy Lee FCIS FCS(PE), and his daughter Crystal Lee ACIS ACS, also a member of the Institute, were interviewed by JobsDB. Dr Lee talked about the important roles and key success factors of being a company secretary in a listed company. Having been inspired by Dr Lee, Crystal Lee has also started her career in the company secretarial filed. At the end of the interview, JobsDB also interviewed Institute Chief Executive Samantha Suen FCIS FCS(PE) who pointed out the important personality traits of a company secretary. HKICS interviewed by CTgoodjobs Institute Past President Richard Leung FCIS FCS and his son, Institute student Arthur Leung as well as Institute Chief Executive Samantha Suen FCIS FCS(PE) were interviewed by CTgoodjobs. During the interview, Mr Leung, who is a Barrister with Des Voeux Chambers, shared his road to success from being a company secretary to a successful accountant and a practising barrister. Mr Leung was supportive to his son to become a Chartered Secretary and Chartered Governance Professional. Accordingly, Mr Arthur Leung is currently studying a Master in Corporate Governance course which is
accredited by the Institute. Ms Suen explained the entry requirements and employers’ expectation of a qualified Chartered Secretary and Chartered Governance Professional. HKICS 11th biennial Corporate Governance Conference 2018 television broadcast The Institute’s 11th biennial Corporate Governance Conference 2018 titled ‘The New Horizon: New Challenges, Opportunities and Thinking’ held on 14 September 2018 (CGC 2018) was video-recorded by The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). The recording forms part of OUHK’s ‘Knowledge for All’ TV programmes. The keynote speeches at CGC by two distinguished speakers, The Honourable Mr James Lau JP and Professor Mervyn King were broardcast on 24 Febuary 2019 on TVB Pearl channel. The rest of videos recorded at CGC will be aired on Sunday mornings from March to April 2019. Practical Corporate Governance Conferenece 2019 in Taipei, Taiwan The Institute jointly organises a Practical Corporate Governance Conference 2019 with Governance Professional Institutes of Taiwan and KPMG Taiwan. The Conference will be held at International Conference Hall of GIS MOTC Convention Center in Taiwan on Friday, 29 March 2019 aiming to bring together expertise from Hong Kong, Taiwan and internationally to address some of the new horizons for corporate governance in Taiwan and elsewhere. As part of this, the Conference will be giving particular attention to the challenges of related party transactions, as well as broader issues of stakeholder engagement, risk and new technology. On each topic, the focus will be on the practical contribution that company secretaries and other governance professionals can make to the effective management of these issues. For details and registration (in Chinese only), please click here. Earth Hour 2019 The Earth Hour 2019 of the World Wildlife Fund will take place at 8.30pm on Saturday, 30 March 2019. The Institute will continue to support this initiative in environmental protection and caring for our planet. As pledged, the Institute Secretariat offices in Hong Kong and Beijing will switch off all lights in the offices for the designated hour.
