While we can’t change an animals past, our mission is to rewrite their future. November, 2019 The Hallie Hill Howler By: Jennifer Middleton Dear Friends, November is ‘Adopt a Senior Pet Month’! So naturally, we are celebrating the many fabulous senior dogs and cats here at Hallie Hill! Most of you al- ready know the benefits of having a senior pet. They are often less destruc- tive, less active, more relaxed, and more predictable than puppies or kittens. Many people suffer great emotional pain when they must say “goodbye” to a beloved pet of many years, so they hesitate to adopt another dog or cat that is already advanced in age. They understand- ably feel they cannot endure the heartbreak of los- ing another pet anytime soon. During my years here at the sanctuary, I have been amazed to meet many wonderful people who adopt senior pets be- cause they know how much the animals need them! Maybe they like this quote by Sidney Jeanne Seward as much as I do: “Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog.” We have many opportunities for you to be ‘blessed’ at Hallie Hill! Go to www.Halliehill.com to meet your next best friend. You need our seniors just as much as they need you! Maybe even more! 1
Happy Thanksgiving from our Hallie Hill Family, to yours! We at Hallie Hill wish you a blessed Thanksgiving season with an abundance of human and animal friends and family around your table! We are always thankful for our adopters and supporters, but now is a good time to tell you—thank you for all you do for Hallie Hill that allows us to continue our mission!! We cannot do it without you! Blessing of the Animals Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church November, 2019 10.6.19 3
Ray stars in Subaru’s ‘Make A Dog’s Day’ Campaign! This was a really exciting month for us at Hallie Hill as one of our very own starred in the commercials for Subaru’s Make a Dog’s Day Cam- paign! Ray, and 6 other ’Underdogs’ from Charleston area rescues, were featured in national print and video commercials! The spots, which aired on television, streaming services and in social media, en- couraged adoption of challenged shelter animals. Ray was wonderful in the photo and video recording sessions held at Hed Hi Media, and it shows in the resulting commercials! Dog Handling Workshop with Jeff Horan! On 10/14 we spent a very educational morning with Jeff Horan! Jeff volunteered his time to help volunteers learn to establish a consistent approach to our dogs, and to help teach the dogs the skills they need to be successfully adopted! He dis- cussed and modeled: 1) body language and why it is important, 2) claiming your space, 3) positive reinforcement and how to use it, 4) establishing dominance, 5) the importance of a leash, and how it can change the way you see a dog, and, 6) routine and consistency! Jeff’s introductory dog handling session is required for all new volunteers, and highly encouraged for all volunteers. It is in the best in- terest of the dogs if we all interact with them in a consistent way! Look for the dates of Jeff’s November sessions below! Sunday, November 10th! Choose to attend at one of the following times: 9 AM OR 1 PM in the cabin! November, 2019 9
Sinker Represents Hallie Hill in the Community! This month, Sinker and Jen- nifer spent time with the kinder- garten students at LLCS and the students of Porter-Gaud School! They shared Sinker’s story with the students as an example of how Hallie Hill fulfills its im- portant mission of providing a compassionate safe haven with quality food and medical care for dogs and cats in need; a tempo- rary home for those able to be adopted and a forever home for those in need. She talked with the students about the value of pets as family members and how to treat them with gentleness and respect. Sinker was the recipient of lots of love on those visits! Daddy’s Girl!
