September, 2020 We can’t change their past, But we can rewrite their future. The Hallie Hill Howler February, 2021 Meet our Board of Directors: Dorothy and Frank Farfone Thank you for this opportunity! Frank and I met in our freshman year of college and have been together ever since! We have been married for more than half a century and have been blessed with three wonderful children and three amazing (of course) grandchildren - all of whom live in our same zip code! (By the way, they followed us to Charleston, we did not follow them!) My family had dogs even before I came along! Frank and I honestly think that you can have a house, but not a home, without a dog. I saw an article about Hallie Hill in a magazine about two weeks after we lost our hound, who had been a rescue. We were so impressed with the article that we drove up to visit the Sanctuary in person. We were looking for another Coonhound. They, unbelievably, had none, but we were so lucky to meet Jennifer and Hel- en on that day. They showed us a little black cocker span- iel and asked if we were interested in her? No, we were not. When we left that day we talked about volunteering, as we were so impressed with Hallie Hill. The next morning, my husband left for a day trip and some- thing made me get in the car and drive back to Hallie Hill. I adopted “the little black cocker” and took her home, put her in our tub and gave her a bath. She was such a sweet baby we gave her the new name of “Baby” and fell in love with her immediate- ly. We did follow through with volunteering at Hallie Hill and now we are both on the Board of Directors. Baby was with us for many years before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We now have a new rescue, a Red Tick Coon Hound named Sienna, who has again filled our hearts with love. 1

Jamie Connolly Born and raised in Massachusetts, I grew up in a three-dog house- hold - meaning we always had three dogs at a time! My parents normally adopted older dogs be- cause they thought no one else would, which resulted in me own- ing 11 dogs in my lifetime. I adopted my current dog, Lady, in 2012 and I constantly remind my husband that she is the real love of my life! She is a rescue mutt from Tennessee, and she has lived with me in two states and even moved with me to Spain for a year! Lady and I moved to Charleston in 2017 and I was lucky enough to meet my hus- band, Brian, here five months lat- er. We adopted a second dog from the ASPCA, Chauncy, and he is the fattest, most sensitive pittie mix, ever! Brian and I were mar- ried in October 2020 and cur- rently reside in West Ashley. Hal- lie Hill has been a blessing for me, I love coming there and spending time with the dogs - the cats are growing on me too! Its such a A T T E N T I O N V O L U N T E E R S! peaceful atmosphere for dogs that Hours to visit Hallie Hill: might not do well in a traditional shelter and it is wonderful to be a 12:00 PM—3:30PM part of an organization that pro- vides a second chance to dogs that Sunday, Monday, need one. My family and friends Wednesday and Friday get daily and unsolicited updates about the pups and their progress. Hallie Hill Welcomes our new Assistant Director and Adoptions Coordinator: Michele Griffin “I’m thrilled to be joining the HH family! Coming from a background of working at open-admission shelters, where my passion was working with the animals who needed a little (or a lot) “extra”, I’m excited for this transition. At HH I’ll be able to work with the animals without worry of them deterio- rating in a kennel or time and resources running out before they can be placed in the homes they deserve. I live in Summerville with my husband Shawn, daughter Caeley, son Hayden and my three rescue dogs Folly, Lydia and George! I’m from Saugerties, NY. Lived in Charleston while active duty Air Force ‘95-2000, returned for good in 2013.” Michele comes to us with experience as a Volunteer Coordinator, Dog Behav- ior/Enrichment Manager, and lifelong animal lover. She is skilled, profes- sional, and a great communicator with people and animals alike. She is a wonderful addition to our Hallie Hill team, and we are so happy to have her! Be sure to stop in and introduce yourself on your next visit to the Sanctuary! February, 2021 5

One of our goals for our animals at Hallie Hill is to help them to be as adoptable as possible! Chad visited with some of the staff and volunteers on January 19th to provide some training on how to approach dogs to keep them calm, how to reinforce to increase good behavior and how to approach teaching good ‘walking on a leash’ behavior! We appreciate his time and expertise, and look forward to working with him in the future to address behaviors that may prohibit a dog from being a well be- February, haved family member! Thank you Chad! 2021 7
We all know that we’re supposed to 10 Dog walk our dogs at least once a day, and yet studies have shown Walking that 20% of us don’t walk our dogs everyday. Tips If you want to start walking your Everyone dog every day it comes down to getting motivated and making it Should a habit. Remember that walking is- n’t just good exercise for you and Know! your dog, it’s important to your dogs overall well being. Here’s a list of 10 dog walking tips that will make your walks more enjoyable for both you and your dog. 1. Use a Front Clip Harness if Your Dog Pulls on Leash Does your dog constantly pull on leash? Try using a front clip harness. Dog collars and harnesses that clip on the back actually promote more pulling. Figuring that out was a ma- jor Aha! moment, and I’m still not sure why it took me so many years to figure out. These harnesses actually help train your dog to ignore you and pull you because when you pull on the leash to try to gain some control, they direct the dog’s attention away from you. – Dr. Sophia Yin Chrissie Getting a front clip harness is the best investment I’ve made when it comes to making walks easier, even better than my favorite pair of sneakers. Just be sure to check for a clip on the front when shopping for a harness. My local pet store had about 10 harnesses, but they were all single back clip ones. I ended up going with the Easy Walk harness from Amazon and it’s been working great. If you want a har- ness that will help keep your dog from pulling just be sure to search for “front clip” op- tions. Keep in mind that the right harness won’t solve everything. You still need to devote time to training your dog to walk nicely, so here’s an awesome loose leash walking guide that will help get you started. 2. Let Your Dog Sniff Around for Mental Stimulation Did you know dog walks are about more than just physical exercise? Your dogs walk is (usually) the only time they get to go out and explore each day. Give them a little extra time to sniff around. If you don’t want to stop every 5 seconds or have you dog sniffing around in your neigh- bors yard that’s fine. You decide which areas are appropriate (and safe) for them to ex- plore. When you want to give your dog a little sniff break just loosen your dogs leash for a few minutes and give them a chance to take in all those smells. I use a “go smell” cue for Laika, and a “let’s walk” cue for when it’s time to move on. All those smells provide your dog with stimulation and information, it’s their way of keep- ing track of what’s going on in the neighborhood. And you’d be surprised at how exhaust- ing a nice ‘sniffer’ walk can be for your dog compared to a brisk 15 minute one around the neighborhood with no sniff breaks. Major Biden: the FRDOTUS! (First Rescue Dog of the United States!!) "The First Family wanted to get settled before bringing the dogs down to Washington from Delaware," Jill Biden's office said, noting that the pair are adjusting to their new life quickly. "Champ is enjoying his new dog bed by the fireplace and Major loved running around on the South Lawn." her office said. The Bidens got now-elder statesman Champ as a puppy in 2008, shortly before they moved into the vice president's official residence at the Naval Observato- ry. Biden drew inspiration for his name from his father, who would tell him, "Any time you get knocked down, champ — get up!" The Bidens adopted him from the Delaware Humane Association in 2018 after he and five other puppies were exposed to a toxic substance. Biden hasn't spo- ken publicly about Major's name, but the president-elect's late son Beau Biden was a major in the Delaware National Guard. The playful pair may have some more company soon - the Bidens have said they plan on getting a cat as well. Asked for an update on a possible first fe- line, Jill Biden's spokesman Michael LaRosa told NBC News, "stay tuned!" Past presidents haven't confined themselves to having dogs and cats — Calvin Coolidge had a donkey and a bobcat, Teddy Roosevelt had a badger, a flying squirrel and a one-legged rooster, and John Quincy Adams had an alligator, a gift from the Marquis du Lafayette, the pet museum said.
