11th Labrador Retriever National JUDGES PROFILES DOG CONFORMATION – 3rd August 21 Stephen Meredith New Zealand I grew up in the Valleys of Wales & have had dogs all my life. My family had Lurchers, Whippets, Jack Russell’s & Labradors all of which were working dogs. I emigrated to New Zealand as a young Mechanical Engineer in early 1979 & my wife & I started showing dogs in 1980 when we bought our first two Labradors from Sally Oscar (Missenden Labradors) & Barry & Wendy Waters (Willowstream Labradors). The lovely yellow bitch Willowstream Gretel sired by Aust/NZ CH Ballyduff Marshal (Imp UK) became the foundation bitch for our very successful Mervale Labrador Kennels & she went on to win her NZ CH title & even won a Best in Show at All Breeds – we were chuffed & soon became hooked on showing our lovely dogs. I am proud to have owned & shown the first NZ Grand Champion Labrador. He was a truly stunning Black Dog, NZ GR CH Southerly Shadow (BISS). We named him Thomas & he was bred by Joan Antrobus & Pat Woollaston. Thommy as he was called was not only a Specialty winner but he won the much coveted Labrador of the year title seven times in a row. Gay & I bred and owned many champions during our twenty plus year involvement with the breed, one of which was a specialty winner, a beautiful black bitch NZ Champion Mervale Paper Moon (BISS). Purdie later went to live in Australia where she was campaigned to her Aust title. My passion for Labradors extended further & in 1991 I started my judging career with the Gundog Group & I am now licensed to judge All Breeds. Over the years, I have had the pleasure to judge Labradors in NZ, All States of Australia, Asia including China, South Africa, South America & Ireland. For 18 years my wife Gay & I were heavily involved with the administration of the Labrador Club, holding many positions on the committee & in fact I was President for much of this time. I am an Executive Councillor of Dogs New Zealand holding the position of Senior Vice President. I have also been involved with the NZ judges training scheme & was one of the board of examiners up until 2015 when I retired to become more involved with our Governing Body. Dogs are my passion & a very important part of my life & Labradors were a key part of it for almost 30 years. I am honoured to be invited to judge your dogs. 11th Labrador Retriever National BITCH CONFORMATION – 4th August 21 Lenore McVicker New Zealand I bought my first Labrador in 1976. He didn’t like the Show Ring much but was right at home during duck shooting season. NZ Ch Jaywick Kalki (imp Aust) a son of Aust Ch. Baringa Brigadoon joined the household in the late 1970’s and proved to be a successful show and stud dog. Aust/NZ Ch. Diant Piper of Jaywick (Imp UK) did his quarantine with me in NZ gaining his title here before going on to Norah Gilbert in Australia. These two dogs were followed by Heatherbourne The Ferryman (Imp UK) son of Sh Ch Heatherbourse Fisherman and Heatherbourne Royal Reward (Imp UK) a son of Int Ch. Receiver of Cranspire. Heath is behind several NZ Champions in the late 1990’s. The family has now been taken over by Smooth Fox Terriers. Club administration began to take more of my time and as an Event Manager who else would a Committee turn to when Shows were to be run. I have held all positions in Rotorua Kennel Assn. Was instrumental in the formation of The Bay of Plenty Gundog Show Society and am a Life Member of both Clubs. I was approached to put my name forward to join the NZ Judges Panel and now award CC’s in the Gundog and Hound Groups. I have judged throughout NZ, several states in Australia and the USA. I thank you for inviting me to judge your National Specialty. It is indeed an honour. Lenore McVicker 5|P age
11th Labrador Retriever National GENERAL SPECIALS CONFORMATION 4th August 21 Jean McErlane New Zealand I have been involved with dogs all my life, being a farmers daughter, but it was Labradors which got me involved in breeding and showing. Dalmatians followed and with imports of both breeds from Australia and England many high quality dogs were bred and shown. I first judged in 1975, having been encouraged by the Rotorua Kennel Club Committee of which I was secretary for 15 years. Appointed to the All Breeds panel in 1991 I have now judged in 16 countries, many of them several times. Specialities in Labradors, Dalmatians, Rottweiler and Poodles have been my privilege to judge in several countries. Club involvement has included committee work for Rotorua Kennel Assn, The Labrador Club, NZ Dog Judges Assn. Northland Kennel Assn. and North Harbour Kennel Assn. Appointed to NZKC Judges Panel of Examiners in 1998 and have conducted Practical examinations in New Zealand, Malaysia, Taiwan and China. Life member of N.Z Kennel Club, Rotorua Kennel Assn. and The Labrador Club. Jean McErlane 6|P age

11th Labrador Retriever National RATG – 3rd August 2021 Mrs K Blair New South Wales I have been involved in the dog world since attending my first dog show with our Silky Terrier when I was 9 years old. Since then I have owned, loved, trialled and shown many breeds including English Cocker Spaniels, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Cattle Dogs and Golden Retrievers. I currently share my home with three Flat Coated Retrievers, a Labrador Retriever and a Papillon. I have been actively competing in the sport of retrieving for just over 20 years, starting out with Golden Retrievers. Since 2006 I have actively and successfully competed in retrieving trials and RATG, amongst other disciplines, with my Flat Coated Retrievers and, more recently, our Labrador Retriever. I have a passion for gundogs and have a strong commitment to the preservation of their hunting and working heritage. For me, there is nothing more wonderful than watching a dog transition seamlessly from show ring to field; looking every bit his breed and still working as his ancestors did with drive, natural instinct and biddability. Thank you to the committee for the opportunity to judge at such an historic event. I look forward to watching some beautiful dog work. Kirsty Blair 8|P age
