July 1 - September 30, 2019 Featured Artist: Danté Fenolio www.anotheca.com Danté Fenolio grew up in the fog-shrouded redwood forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. Pacific Giant Salamanders and Red Legged Frogs were a regular part of his daily childhood experience. He has maintained and bred in captivity a variety of amphibian species, including endangered species like the Darwin's Frog (Rhinoderma darwinii), and the Malagasy Tomato Frog (Dyscophus antongilii), as well as species that previously had been infrequently bred, like the live bearing West African caecilian (Geotrypetes seraphini) and Leaf Frogs such as the Yellow-eyed Leaf Frog (Agalychnis annae) and the Amazonian Leaf Frog (Cruziohyla craspedopus). With a combined undergraduate degree in Biology and Environmental Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz, Fenolio earned a Masters degree in Zoology from the University of Oklahoma, where he examined the population ecology of Ozark Blind Cave Salamanders, (Eurycea spelaea). Danté then earned a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Miami, Florida, involving amphibian conservation and taxonomy. After graduate school, Fenolio worked for the Atlanta Botanical Garden, helping to coordinate both local and international amphibian conservation efforts and to develop captive breeding methods for endangered species. Perhaps the most significant project while with the Garden was the development of the Chilean Amphibian Conservation Center, in Santiago, Chile. The collaboration with the National Zoo of Chile works to develop captive assurance colonies of endangered Chilean amphibians and to monitor wild populations for emergent infectious disease (to learn more, visit www.savedarwinsfrogs.org). Danté now heads the Department of Conservation and Research for the San Antonio Zoo. Fenolio's research interests involve the ecology of animals living in challenging environments, like subterranean ecosystems or forest canopies. He also works with Brazilian colleagues in Central Brazil, performing bioinventories of areas involved with hydroelectric power plant projects. Non-Profit Support: San Antonio Zoo, Dept of Conservation and Research www.sazoo.org/conservation San Antonio Zoo’s Department of Conservation and Research seeks to fulfill the San Antonio Zoo’s Mission Statement through a variety of approaches, including fieldwork and captive husbandry of rare and threatened species. Much of our work is collaborative, involving partners from state and federal agencies, academia, and the private sector. The scope of our efforts includes projects on three continents, transnational research, as well as projects throughout the United States – with particular emphasis on Texas. Current projects focus on fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and crustaceans as well as imperiled ecosystems and cultures. The results of this work include recommendations for conservation and management of threatened species and ecosystems, boots-on-the-ground conservation, and contributions to our understanding of the ecology, life history, and evolutionary history of a diversity of organisms in the form of technical reports, popular articles, books, and peer-reviewed papers. October 1 - December 31, 2019 Featured Artist: John Bramblitt ** Returning Artist by Demand! bramblitt.myshopify.com John Bramblitt is an artist living in Denton Texas, his art has been sold in over one hundred and twenty countries and he has appeared internationally in print, TV and radio. He has appeared on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, ABC, NBC, FOX, Discovery Channel and BBC Radio and TV to name a few outlets, and he's been featured in The New York Times and Psychology Today as well as designed the artwork for numerous magazine covers and even the artwork for major film productions. He's the subject of the award winning documentary shorts "Line of Sight' and “Bramblitt.” His work has received much recognition including the ‘Most Inspirational Video of 2008′ from YouTube and three Presidential Service Awards for his innovative art workshops. And John is blind. Mr. Bramblitt is also the author of the award winning book, Shouting in the Dark , and is the current selectee for the Texas Governor’s Disability Employment Awareness poster. He currently works as a consultant for museums in developing programs that are designed to include everyone – no matter their ability or disability. Shouting in the Dark is the story of Bramblitt's life, his journey navigating through this new territory of blindness, and how he ultimately rekindles his joy, passion, and relationships through art. Prior to his blindness, John studied at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where he graduated with honors. When Bramblitt lost the last of his vision in 2001 due to complications with epilepsy and Lyme's disease, his hopes of becoming a creative writing teacher were shattered and he sunk into a deep depression. He felt disconnected from family and friends, alienated and alone. But then something amazing happened-- he discovered painting. He learned to distinguish between different colored paints by feeling their textures with his fingers. He taught himself how to paint using raised lines to help him find his way around the canvas, and through something called haptic visualization, which enables him to "see" his subjects through touch. He now paints amazingly lifelike portraits of people he's never seen--including his wife and son. While art was always a major part of John’s life it was not until he lost his sight in 2001 that he began to paint, and it was then that he says, “Art reshaped my life.” John’s paintings are intensely personal, and are mostly taken from real people and events in his life. John’s workshops are unique in the art world in that they not only span the gap between beginning and professional artists, but also include adaptive techniques for people with disabilities. According to John, “Everyone has an artist somewhere in them; sometimes they just need a little help letting it out.” Non-Profit Support: Guide Dogs of Texas guidedogsoftexas.org They say that a dog is man’s best friend, but at Guide Dogs of Texas our highly-trained, service dogs are more than just that – they’re the “eyes” for countless, visually impaired Texans, as well as their loving and constant companions, providing them with the freedom, mobility and independence to go about their daily lives. From the moment they are born, our puppies are groomed to be future guide dogs that will be paired with their new owners, who without a guide dog might not enjoy the freedom and independence they desire.
