     Monday 3 – Thursday 6 March
Long before the invention of photography, Dutch master Johannes Vermeer was painting
extraordinarily photo-realistic works, and just how he did so remains one of art’s biggest
questions today. In this fascinating, BAFTA nominated documentary, inventor Tim Jenison
seeks answers in a pursuit that takes him from Texas to Holland and even Buckingham Palace.
An absorbing exploration of art’s relationship with technology, the film asks deeper questions
of obsession and the creative process as Jenison tries to replicate the Dutchman’s incredible,
light-filled work using an engineer’s approach.

     The Godfather Part II
     Monday 3 – Thursday 6 March
Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary follow up to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, is at once
prequel and sequel; continuing the story of Michael Corleone, whilst also travelling back in time to
early twentieth-century Sicily where his father, Vito Corleone, flees the local Mafia and escapes to
New York. Paralleling the young Vito Corleone’s rise with his son Michael’s spiritual fall, Coppola
portrays the many pitfalls of the American dream. Nominated for eleven Academy Awards
and winner of six, this crime epic is considered one of the greatest American films ever made.

          Monday 31 March (18.15)
Los Angeles based independent music label Stones Throw Records
has been gaining momentum in the past two decades for steadily
signing some of the most interesting, esoteric and often abrasive acts
in underground music. At first focusing solely on hip-hop, the label has
since branched into a variety of different genres – becoming a haven for
fans of left-field music. Focusing on the man at the centre of it all, Chris
Manak aka DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton charts the
rise of the label, from humble beginnings to modern cult status.

          Tuesday 18 March (20.30)
Ken Loach’s award-winning feature, Family Life, follows the fate of
nineteen-year-old Janice (Sandy Ratcliff), who loses her right to self-
determination after she becomes pregnant. Once her parents force her
to have an abortion, Janice’s troubling behaviour comes under further
scrutiny, culminating in electro-convulsive therapy which eventually
reduces her to little more than a case study for medical students.
Filmed in a quasi documentary style, this socially conscious drama is a
sobering reflection on class, social convention and the generation gap.

Henri-Georges Clouzot’s lost masterpiece Inferno is the subject of
Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea’s documentary, which attempts
to discover why the big budget feature film was halted only three weeks
into its production. Including interviews with members of the cast and
crew and with excerpts from the surviving footage, the documentary
demonstrates how the director’s growing ego and flagging health
jeopardized this tale of sexual jealousy and psychological instability.
Introduced by Ela Orleans. Ela Orleans is a Polish musician and

The cult status of À bout de souffle has been propelled in part by the
memorable coupling of its leading actors, Jean-Paul Belmondo and
Jean Seberg, whose story on screen seemed to portray the troubled
love affair between French cinema and Hollywood.

Federico Fellini is an incomparable guide to the Eternal City in an
autobiographical film that mixes fond memories of his childhood visits
to Rome during the era of Mussolini in the 1930s with vivid fantasies
and striking impressions of the city in the 1970s. Peter Gonzales plays
the teenage Fellini as he moves into a Rome tenement building and
meets a succession of wild characters who populate the neighbourhood.
The digital restoration ensures that this Fellini classic is looking better
than ever.

post-War Rome to internationally admired cinema greats. There are

Sandra Vaghe stelle dell’orsa
     Tuesday 11 March (17.45)
Made immediately after his masterpiece The Leopard, Luchino Visconti’s
rarely seen Sandra has been restored to its sparkling best. Claudia
Cardinale’s steely, neurotic Sandra returns to her home-town of Volterra
in Tuscany, accompanied by her new husband Andrew (Michael Craig).
Confronted upon their arrival by a distraught mother, a former lover and
her dashingly handsome, deeply devoted brother, this is a modern day
interpretation of the Electra myth transformed into a stark, hothouse
melodrama with strong echoes of Tennessee Williams.

     Wednesday 12 March (18.00)
Daniele Luchetti (My Brother is an Only Child) returns to his childhood in
the 1970s for this boisterous, beguiling portrait of a family in crisis. Kim
Rossi Stuart is superb as Guido, a pretentious sculptor who is rather
too fond of his beautiful life models. When his long-suffering wife
Serena leaves for the summer with their sons, her decision to assert her
independence offends Guido’s old-fashioned chauvinism. The tension
in their relationship and wider changes in Italian society make for a
warm and witty autobiographical remembrance of times past.

his unpredictable friend Stefano test his loyalty and leave him questioning
exactly where he belongs in this confusing, complex world.

1959 and was Oscar-nominated for Best Foreign Film. In 1916, Giovanni
from Milan and Oreste from Rome are called up to join the army.
They are united in their desire to stay out of the firing line and live
