THE GOAL Saint John Soccer Club Monthly Newsletter - July 2021 (Issue 2) BOARD OF DIRECTORS President: Guy Verna Vice President: Cuilean Hendra Thank you for being a member of the Saint John Soccer Secretary: vacant Club. The 2021 Summer Season is off to a great start. Treasurer: Cynthia Young We have five Premiership Teams and six Division 1 Sponsorship: Mark Fournier Teams competing this year. The players are having fun learning, developing, and growing together as a team. IT: Heather Morrison All our Grassroots Programs are full, with locations in Mark Coakley Field/Facility Coordinator: Ben Curry Grand Bay, Shamrock, Irving Oil Field House, and SJSC Technical Director Referee Coordinator: Rich Mitchell Rothesay Netherwood School. THE GOAL Welcome Malcolm! Another great ad- dition to the Saint John Soccer Club! Malcolm comes to us from Quispamsis and recently graduated High School from Rothe- say Netherwood School this year. He will be studying General Sciences in the fall at Mount Allison University in Sackville. He enjoys science because it is easy to con- nect with the real world. THE GOAL PROTEIN PANCAKES INGREDIENTS 1 cup oats 1 banana, mashed 1 cup whole wheat flour ¼ cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon each of baking powder and baking soda 1 cup blueberries 1 cup cottage cheese or Greek yogurt ½ cup 1% milk 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon vanilla Makes 12-15 medium-sized pancakes INSTRUCTIONS Combine all dry ingredients and add wet to dry. Blend until relatively smooth and well mixed. Spray pan or griddle with cooking spray and heat to medium heat. Use a 1/4 cup measuring cup and pour batter onto warm pan or griddle. Cook like regular pancakes - about 3 minutes for first side. Flip and cook until batter is no longer runny Top with maple syrup, almond butter, etc. NUTRITION INFORMATION (PER 3 PANCAKES) Calories: 309 Carbohydrates: 43 g Protein: 19 g Fat: 9 g Fiber: 5 g Sport Benefits: A perfect breakfast before training or serve cold between multi-event or as race day fueller (in this case, sub the whole wheat flour with white!) To freeze leftovers: allow to cool on wire rack then place in freezer zip lock bag. Stores well for about a week. Reheat in toaster. THE GOAL Mr. Richard Mitchell • SJSC Referee Development Coordinator • SJSC Goalkeeper Coach • Assistant Coach for U13AAA and U15AAA Girls Teams Mr. Richard Mitchell joins the SJSC Board bringing an interest to provide all interested players, coaches, parents and volunteers the opportunity to receive the proper training, development and encouragement to become a soccer referee. Rich aims to provide proper courses, on- field mentorship and personal assessments to help people succeed as referees. He will also offer younger kids the skills to become a grassroots referee for U10 games, or become a NBSRA Certified Regional Referee. Rich is an experienced referee with 30 years of refereeing various levels including youth, to university, to Senior A and including national tournaments across the country. Rich has also filled the role of Referee assessor and instructor for the New Brunswick Soccer Referee Associ- ation for the last 10 years, providing mentorship and guidance to young referees across the province. Rich has played soccer as a goalkeeper for 38 years from youth to university to Senior A in lo- cal and provincial teams and playing in national tournaments across the country. Rich has been a soccer coach with Saint John Soccer for various teams over the past 8 years. He is the head instructor for the Saint John Soccer Goal Keeper Academy which has seen dedi- cated goalkeepers represent SJSC on Team New Brunswick. 25
THE GOAL Shamrock Park is a prime multi-purpose outdoor sport and recreation venue in Saint John. The park is located at 200 Visart Street in the City’s North End. The Saint John Soccer Club is very lucky to have access to this amazing park which is home to the regulation-size Emera Field, with artificial turf, lights and spectator seating. The park also includes multipur- pose grass fields for youth, multiple ball fields, 8 tennis courts with lights, 11 horseshoe pits, and a community gar- den. The Saint John Soccer Club offers many programs at this location in the Spring, Summer and Fall. In 2014, the City of Saint John and Emera New Brunswick an- nounced an investment in a sports field at Shamrock Park. Emera New Brunswick contributed $500,000 towards the $1.5 million project which included the installation of an arti- ficial turf field and new lighting system. The Emera New Brunswick Field was officially opened on June 20, 2015. 23
