MESSAGE FROM THE CEO It is unbelievable to think we are halfway through 2020 already, and what a year it’s been for us all. We have witnessed the horrific bushfires, suffered a global pandemic, and collectively overcome many challenges faced throughout the year so far. I’m proud to share many of the incredible achievements we’ve made as a team in spite of these challenges. We kept in touch, whilst staying apart. Our ALHD team found inventive ways to continue to provide services to the deaf and hard of hearing community. Our support and admin teams were able to work from home whilst our trainers spread their working spaces across our centre to maintain social distancing and work within COVID-19 requirements. Eleven Hearing Assistance Dogs placed so far in 2020. Despite these setbacks, we have delivered 11 dogs to people across Australia who are deaf or hard of hearing. The borders are still off-limits for most, so interstate placements are especially difficult at this time. We have managed to practice social distancing and follow health protocols during interactions to ensure all staff and recipients’ health is paramount. Expanding our services - Medical Alert Dogs. Diabetes is one of the five core Lions Pillars and was identified as a need in Australia that we have the capacity and expertise to support with our provision of Assistance Dogs. There will be more exciting news on this program to come. To manage a team that can make achievements like this during a global pandemic makes me delighted to be CEO of this wonderful organisation. But of course, without support from Lions Clubs and their Members, none of this would be possible, and for that, I must sincerely thank you for your service, especially throughout this tough year. Your sense of community and togetherness has certainly supported the wider community through an especially difficult time. Yours in Lionism, Lion David Horne Chief Executive Officer 2
MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIRMAN There have been many exciting, strategic advancements here at ALHD over the last six months, all leading us into a period of vast growth. As a Board, we regularly meet with the Management team to oversee the organisation’s strategy and new business. CEO David’s leadership through a gruelling 2020 has been impressive and you can see this in the achievements that David has outlined in his message on page two. I’ve spent some of my time going through our new website, something we have needed for some time now. Seeing ALHD represented in such a fresh, bright manner was energising, and I congratulate the team for their hard work putting this together. I am sorry to tell you of the retirement of our long-term Board Member and Treasurer, PDG Graham Smithers, after almost 30 years involved with ALHD. During this time, Graham has even acted as interim CEO to support the organisation through crucial transitional periods. To honour Graham’s incredible contributions to ALHD upon retirement, we named one of our new puppies in the training program, Smithers (you can meet him on page four). Thank you Graham for your outstanding work for ALHD. I’m pleased to welcome our new Member of the Board and Treasurer, PDG Megan Butler, to the team. Megan is a Member of the Lions Club of Elizabeth Playford and is no stranger to ALHD. Megan has supported ALHD with the sponsorship of Hearing Assistance Dogs Indi, and Jakeb, our 600th dog. Welcome, Megan. As we move on to the remainder of the year, I want to thank two groups of people. The first is the ALHD staff who have and continue to face unique and uncertain circumstances. Their response has been full of initiative, drive and determination which has been first-class. I also wish to highlight and thank our fellow Lions from Broome to Sydney and Darwin to Hobart for their ongoing support and commitment that allows ALHD to continue its great work. Yours in Service, PDG Rhys Roberts OAM Board Chairman 3

LIONS CLUB SUPPORT H AN Each year, we receive incredible financial T Y K support from Lions Clubs across Australia O U without which we could absolutely not continue our services. As a not-for-profit organisation and Lions initiative, we rely just so heavily on donations from Lions Clubs. We understand 2020 has been a difficult year for many Clubs, with many well-deserved fundraising activities for bushfires early in the year, and limits on fundraising efforts due to COVID-19 restrictions. This has resulted in a great impact for ALHD as well, seeing our overall revenue decrease by approximately 80% compared to this time last year. Thank you for the much-needed contributions Lions Clubs have still managed to make to ALHD throughout this difficult time. We appreciate and acknowledge your efforts and support towards ALHD during such a tumultuous period. Thank you. LEAVING A LEGACY Leaving a gift in your Will is a simple and sustainable way to support ALHD beyond your lifetime. For many, it can be challenging to think of life after you have gone, but a Will is crucial to ensure your wishes will be met. If you don’t have a valid Will already, we urge you to consider the importance of completing one. We also encourage you to consider your circumstances, your friends, and your family, and discuss your intentions with them and/or your solicitor. A charitable gift left in your Will to ALHD is an incredible honour for ALHD, and no matter how large or small, it enables us to continue our life- changing work in the Australian community. Your gift can leave a footprint for years to come. We encourage you to let us know your intentions and become involved in the ALHD community before this time comes. To discuss how to leave a gift in your Will, including the rewarding benefits during your lifetime, please feel free to contact Alix Katala for a confidential conversation, on 08 8388 7836. Your love for people and dogs will carry on into the future. 6
