Coffin Bay Progress Association PRESIDENTS REPORT Hello Coffin Bay, Thanks again to the Cummins Community Op Shop for the funds to cover a reverse cycle air con in the Library, very warm and cosy in there now. We have just received a Grant from Rowan Ramseys “Stronger Communities Programme” which will go towards the much needed replacement & repairs to the Halls ceilings and roof. This money has been topped up by the Cummins Bendigo Bank allowing us to do all that is required. Thank you to both of you for all of your support and help. Very excited to see the DCLEP fortnightly Newsletter on the 21/5/21 saying that the Morgan Reserve ( Rec Park ) is set to receive an $80000.00 facelift. It says “ there are plans to use the funds to install SA Water infrastructure for the oval watering and to keep a store of top soil to improve the surface and health of the oval. New playground equipment and a soft-fall will also be installed”. Hopefully it won’t be long before it’s looking like our much loved oval again. A few weeks ago I saw on the CB Community FB page that there was a Grant available and someone was wondering if anyone would like to apply for it. Please remember that if you have a project that you think will benefit CB and want to apply for a Grant you can only apply if you are a Not for Profit Organisation or you are in partnership with a NFPO. The CB Community Progress Ass can help in this regard, just come to one of our monthly meetings and have a talk to us and we will see what we can do to help you or your group. Cheers, Carol Fathers Coffin Bay Sun Advertising Pricing 2021 Invoices will be sent from The Coffin Bay Progress Front page 2/3 page $20 per month Association on booking. Library News Thank you, Library Volunteers, for the great work you do in shelving our books and opening on Saturday. You may have noticed a recent Social Media campaign, around Libraries and their importance to the community. The State Government's libraries funding agreement runs out in June, and as yet there is still no confirmation that it will be renewed without cutbacks. SA Libraries are an integral part of each community, offering a safe, friendly and welcoming space for all. We are a hub of literacy from birth to beyond; a support for those increasing digital literacy; a harbour for local history; a service point for IT requirements; a space for community to gather and enjoy. We are books...and we are so much more. We are asking for your support, to ensure that our libraries around this state are not debilitated by Government cutbacks. Please follow and share the social media posts with #librarydollarsmakesense. Contact your State Government member via email or through the QR codes, to express your appreciation for your local library. Templates of letters and QR codes are available at the Library. Sincere thanks
Gardening Tip by Phil Siviour Coffin Bay Gardening Service The easiest way to gather fallen leaves from the lawn is to mow over them. Use a high setting and collect in grass catcher. This can then be added to the compost or spread straight onto your garden beds - the leaves will break down quickly because they are in small pieces. Plant winter-happy herbs like sage, coriander, oregano, thyme and # rosemary. Sowing lettuce seeds every couple of weeks at this time of year will give you leaves to continually pick through late winter and early spring. Keep an eye out for snails in your garden - they will be more active during cool, damp weather. ZERO WASTE / RECYCLING A few lines to inspire people to tread lightly on this beautiful planet by Marianne Tremp METAL - why is it important to recycle metal and not throw it in the bin? Mainly for the preservation of natural resources, I think. "Metals are essential, versatile and can be used in a number of ways. Metals can be used for industrial purposes such as the manufacture of trucks, cars, airplanes, ships, and railways. They can also be used to manufacture domestic items such as cutlery, crockery and even in packaging. The good thing about metal recycling is that metal can be recycled over and over without altering its properties." At our house, we collect all sorts of little bits of metal in a tin can (old nails, beer bottle caps, sparkling wine "wire" etc.). And when the tin is % full, clamp it shut with some pliers and put in the recycling bin. Bigger bits of metal can be dropped off at a scrap metal yard. The one on Mallee Crescent in Port Lincoln lets you drop off 24/7 out the front. I had a chat to one of the workers and he showed me a pretty cool collection of old funky looking stuff they keep. And if we need a bit of metal to fix something, they might even have the right piece for it!

Hello from your local SA Ambulance volunteers Celebrating the achievements and leadership of women in our community. Empowering current and future generations. In honour of International Women’s Day 2021 Coffin Bay’s SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) volunteers ventured out to the middle of our beautiful bay to take this cracker shot. We’re a diverse bunch aged in our 20s to 70s. We fit our SAAS volunteering in around work, parenting, home life, other volunteer roles, sport and hobbies. But the one thing we all have in common is that we are proud to be SAAS volunteers and provide life changing services to our community. Over the last month we’ve made the most of the beautiful weather and trained outdoors honing our skills in haemorrhage control, trauma and extrication from vehicles. In the coming weeks we will have another joint training session with Pt Lincoln SES and have the chance to use these skills and a whole range of others in simulated motor vehicle accidents. The women of Coffin Bay’s SA Ambulance team (left to right): Maz Lovegrove, Ann Trewartha, Kaye Ferguson, Lara Evans, Hannah Dunn, Marianne Tremp, Pauline Britza (absent: Sarah Fealy who had to prioritise parenting on this night). Big thanks to Andrew Pietsch of Coffin Bay Oyster Company for taking us out to this spot. If you’re interested in volunteering with SAAS in Coffin Bay go to http://www.saambulance.com.au/Volunteering.aspx or contact our Regional Team Leader Chris Morgan on 0428 822 031. And yes blokes are welcome too!
