December 2021 Brambles The Brambles Curry County Master Gardeners PO Box 107, Gold Beach, O R 97444 541-698-0300 or 1-800-356-3986 T’IS THE SEASON TO BE GRATEFUL ~ Julia Bott The Holiday Season is now in full swing. In the midst of decorating, baking, shopping, and enjoying friends and family, some of us also take time to reflect on the good in our lives. We usually hold off reflecting on the bad until the end of the year, when we make resolutions for the New Year. But that is fodder for a different column. As I write this, it is a brilliantly clear and gorgeous day! But, thankfully, we’ve also had a good amount of rain and the weather predictions of La Niña show that southern Oregon should get normal rainfall, unlike our neighbors to the north who are getting drenched and those to the south who will remain drier than normal. I’m grateful that it looks like Curry County Master Gardeners will have a new coordinator starting soon. And looking forward to those resolutions, I’m sure that all of you will join me in adding a resolution to be helpful and supportive as she navigates this new job. I’ve said it before, and I mean it every time – I am inspired by all that you do as Master Gardeners! Working with you all is a pleasure and that’s not always the case with volunteers. I always look forward to working with each of you and I’m constantly amazed by all that is accomplished. However, I hear everybody say that we need more volunteers. Well, the training classes are one way to recruit more people, and YAY! There is a class being offered in 2022. Please spread the word and help us build our ranks. And, not to ask you to do one more thing, but…we will need mentors for those incoming class members. Please let me know if you are interested in being a mentor. People are already getting excited for 2022 and I’m hearing lots of great ideas for events. What are you looking forward to doing in 2022 as a Master Gardener? May this season bring you joy and be full of family and friends.

December 2021 Brambles T h e H i l l , my current yard project by M i c h e l l e A r n o l d I have a dream of a flower covered hill. It will be frequented by bees, butterflies and birds which enjoy the pollen, the nectar and the pure beauty of it. Snow White would be happy on my hill. I envision a low maintenance natural, but not formal, collection of all the annuals and perennials that I love. The reality is I have a 75 degree slope that used to be shaded by three Douglas Firs. Since we had the trees chopped down in 2019, grass, dandelions and thistle moved in. It would make sense to terrace the hill and have several rows of neat garden beds. But my gardening budget won’t stretch for terracing labor and supplies, and my aging energy level is not up to a DIY project of that magnitude. Also, my gardening style is not formal. I love a little more natural and surprising garden. Still clearing, planting, watering and weeding are really hazardous at that angle. I rolled down the hill once the first summer and fortunately landed in the dahlias; I’m not risking that again. So I clear and plant sections while sitting, and I’ve installed drip irrigation. I can clear about 3 square feet in a couple of hours most days. Thank goodness for the Annual Plant Sale, time in the high school greenhouse learning about propagation and friends with seeds and ideas! I planted many healthy and wonderful ornamentals that are thriving on the cleared part of the hill. I have had some success with ice plants, rosemary, viola and cosmos to fill in areas between the larger perennials to choke out weeds. I plan to finish clearing the hill on dry days this winter and will seed the rest of it with hardy and colorful flowers next spring. This is a long-term project that I hope will brighten our backyard for many years to come. After the trees were cleared 6

December 2021 Brambles DECEMBER 2021 GARDEN TIPS Maintenance and cleanup Western Oregon: Do not walk on lawns until frost has melted. Spread wood ashes evenly on your vegetable garden. Use no more than 1.5 pounds per 100 square feet per year. Don't use if the soil pH is greater than 7.0 or if potassium levels are excessive. Protect new landscape plants from wind. Use stakes, guy wires or windbreaks as needed. Yard sanitation: rake leaves, cut and remove withered stalks of perennial flowers, mulch flowerbeds, and hoe or pull winter weeds. Turn the compost pile and protect from heavy rains, if necessary. During heavy rains, watch for drainage problems in the yard. Tilling, ditching, and French drains are possible short-term solutions. Consider rain gardens and bioswales as a longer-term solution. Check stored flower bulbs, fresh vegetables, and fruits for rot and fungus problems. Discard any showing signs of rot. Tie limbs of columnar evergreens to prevent snow or ice breakage. Central/eastern Oregon: Water your plants every six to eight weeks with a deep soaking to keep them from drying out. Western Oregon: Make sure that landscape plants in protected sites receive water regularly during the winter. Planting and propagation Western Oregon: This is a good time to plant trees and landscape shrubs. Pest monitoring and management Use chemical controls only when necessary and only after thoroughly reading the pesticide label. First consider cultural, then physical and biological controls. Choose the least-toxic options, and use them judiciously. Some examples include insecticidal soaps, horticultural oils, botanical insecticides, and organic and synthetic pesticides. Monitor landscape plants for problems. Don't treat unless a problem is identified. Check for rodent damage around bases of trees and large shrubs. Remove weeds to prevent rodents from using them as hiding places. Use traps and approved baits as necessary. Avoid mounding mulching materials around the bases of trees and shrubs. The mulch might provide cover for rodents. Monitor spruce trees for spruce aphids. Treat if present in large numbers. Read and follow pesticide label directions. Indoor gardening Protect poinsettias from cold. Place them in sunlight; don't let the leaves touch cold windows. Fertilize with houseplant fertilizer to maintain leaf color. Monitor houseplants for adequate water and fertilizer. Water and fertilizer requirements generally are less in winter. 8
