THE ADVOCATE ADVANCING INCLUSION | EMPOWERING LIVES | CREATING COMMUNITY A Note from the Executive Director As we start to slowly regain a new normalcy from the COVID- 19 pandemic, I would like to thank our Mentors and families for their willingness to remain vigilant in practicing safe supports in meaningful ways. There is no doubt that the pandemic has Mission Statement dramatically changed the way we live, but we were able to successfully redirect our energies towards effectively dealing Advocates is a person-centered with the pandemic. ADVOCATES' COMPANION CARE Help You Need Right at Home Everyone can use a helping hand, however finding the perfect person to care for your child or parent can be challenging. If you are exploring options, look no further. Advocates now offers a Companion Care program that is flexible and customizable to fit your needs. Advocates' Companion Care program is a private pay option for those who wish to hire a companion (1:1). This service is available to seniors, children, or adults of any age in need of companion care, with or without OPWDD or Medicaid eligibility in Onondaga, Oswego Madison, and Cayuga counties. Advocates provides employer or record functions such as staff screening/completing background checks, administration of employee benefits, and employee payroll processing. Our companions work with the person receiving services and their family to develop a care plan and provide support with interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising 1:1 staff. Companions serve as an ongoing resource to the family to ensure that staffing needs are met. ADVOCATES 16TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT Join the fun, while supporting a great cause! Advocates’ 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at the Turning Stone Resort Casino. Advocates’ 16th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, presented by TOMRA and Schupan Beverage Recycling, will raise funds to support children and their families awaiting services with information, training, respite, recreation, in-home care, and community-based supports. Golfers will enjoy playing on the Shenendoah Golf Course and the Kaluhyat Golf Course, which offers PGA-level golf in a spectacular natural setting. Golf packages include morning refreshments at registration, 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch on the turn, social hour, meal, online auction, participation gift, and program acknowledgement. Agency News AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE HOSTED BY ADVOCATES Volunteering and giving back have been an integral part of life for Jin Sook Swizdor. Her efforts to host blood drives for the American Red Cross is making a big difference in the lives of others in our community. In May, Jin Sook organized a blood drive at Advocates. Thanks to her efforts, the 15 employees who rolled up their sleeves to donate blood will ensure lifesaving blood products for 45 patients of all ages in urgent need of blood. Advocates would like to thank Jin Sook, and those that volunteered at the blood drive, for making a difference in the lives of so many people in need. We are so proud of you and all your hard work. Housing Navigation Services There are many resources available for supportive housing for people with disabilities. Advocates' residential team is ready to assist families in organizing together and developing supportive housing. Our residential team includes certified Housing Navigators and a Residential Budget Specialist. Our Housing Navigator Team is available to work you and with your Planning Team/Circle of Support to develop a detailed plan that summarizes the supports needed for your loved one to successfully live as independently as possible. Our Residential Budget Specialist can help compare available plans to what is currently available through Self-Direction and Community Habilitation for services, as a part of the individual's residential support plan. Advocates' Coffee Hub Advocates is pleased to announce a brand new initiative, offering an occupational and leadership skills training program for people with disabilities. The initiative will offer opportunities for community inclusion, meaningful career exploration, occupational and leadership skills training, and employment opportunities. Located at 290 Elwood Davis Road in Liverpool (Advocates' main headquarters), Advocates' Coffee Hub will be opening this fall and will be open Monday through Friday. Advocates Coffee Hub will offer freshly ground and brewed Cafe Kubal coffee, delicious, seasonal, locally-sourced and handmade sandwiches and salads provided by Cafe at 407, snacks, soda, and Advocates Coffee Hub other beverages. 3rd Annual Stroll & Roll 5K Register Today! www.runsignup.com Registration is now open for Advocates' 3rd Annual Stroll & Roll Virtual 5K. Everyone is invited to participate! The event will benefit children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in need of Advocates' services. The race will be held virtually from October 10th through October 16th, anywhere, by walking, running, or strolling through your neighborhood or favorite park, marching in place, or running or walking on your treadmill. Race packets include a customized t-shirt, coupons to local businesses, a medal for participating, swag, and a Certificate for Completion. The event will be held at the Palace Theater and will offer wine tasting, food stations, an art exhibit and auction featuring Advocates' artists, and a national speed painter, Tom Varano. Using fingertips, palms and multiple brushes, Tom Varano paints portraits of famous people on a four foot by five foot canvas in just a matter of minutes. His creations are choreographed to music that is powerful and stimulates the senses. This event is open to all families, employees, and the general public. You won't want to miss his performance. RECREATION EVENTS Hit, Run, Score! All Aboard! Please mark your calendars for an evening of fun Take a train back in time with the Adirondack as we cheer on the Syracuse Mets. Scenic Railroad. Ride the train north from Utica’s Union Station to Ramsen Station. On Tuesday, July 13th and Sunday, July 18th, the Mets take on the Rochester Redwings at NBT Advocates will be sponsoring the train ride with Bank Stadium. the Adirondack Scenic Railroad on August 11, 2021 with a 1:30 pm departure time. Advocates' families and employees will enjoy a discounted ticket price rate of $10, a savings of Refreshments $4 per ticket. When purchasing your ticket, will be sold please go to the call window and let them know during the you are with Advocates. 1 1/2 hour trip. Lunch is available for a fee (hot dog, chips, candy and soda) or you can bring a prepacked meal. Cost is $14 per person. Attention Kickball Enthusiasts After a much-anticipated return, we are happy to announce that Advocates' Kickball League is resuming! The summer league session will run from August 4th to September 22nd. Games will be held at the Carrier Park Field, in the Town of Dewitt, on Wednesdays from 5:00pm-6:00pm. There will be a $30 participation fee and you may pay by check or credit card. Checks should be made out to Advocates and sent to Advocates, 290 Elwood Davis Road, Suite 101, Liverpool, NY 13088.
