The Activ All Stars Go the Distance The 2017 Activ All Stars John, Connor, Stephen, Erin and Lorraine, officially completed the Chevron City to Surf for Activ series on Sunday 27 August. The team, made up of people living with disability, travelled over 8,500km to races in Karratha, Geraldton, Albany and Busselton before finishing with the flagship race in Perth. Completing the series is an incredible achievement, with less than 100 finishers prior to the 2017 series. The Activ All Stars were able to accomplish this while raising money and support for Activ in the community, uniting the participants who were lucky enough to meet them with a sense of purpose. The Activ All Stars’ incredible journey wrapped up with a medal presentation alongside Damian Martin, the captain of the Perth Wildcats. A call for the 2018 Activ All Stars will be coming later this year, so keep an eye out. Find out more about the 43rd Chevron City to Surf for Activ series and the amazing achievements of our Activ All Stars in this edition of Activ News. We believe in you• 3 CEO’s Message I am pleased to present you with the spring edition of Activ News for 2017. In August we held our 43rd Chevron City to Surf for Activ, our signature fundraiser and a very special event for the Activ community. It was my pleasure to share the experience this year with our 2017 Activ All Stars John, Connor, Stephen, Erin and Lorraine; a team of five individuals living with disability who travelled across the State to complete each race in the series. The Activ All Stars really filled the event with a sense of enthusiasm and energy and we were incredibly proud to have them as ambassadors for Activ. You can read more about the Activ All Stars journey and see some of their pictures in this edition of Activ News. Our transition to the new Bentley Business Services site has been successfully completed. Our Kewdale team moved into the new building on Monday 28 August, followed by the Embleton team on Monday 11 September, the East Victoria Park Team on Tuesday 26 September, and Palmyra on Monday 9 October. The transition has gone very smoothly and employees have been excited to explore their new facilities. We have made this investment in our Bentley site because we are very proud of the employment opportunities that Activ offers its 1,000 supported employees and we want to ensure the future of this service. I recently attended a conference in Canberra to discuss possible impacts on our supported employees’ wages through the Fair Work Commission. An update is included later in this edition along with contact details for Our Voice Australia, an advocacy group representing supported employees, their families and carers. The Dolphin Program was started by members of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club who had family members with a disability. Glenn and Max are two Activ customers who are enrolled in the program. Glenn has been patrolling the Sorrento beaches for two years and Max will be hitting the surf this summer putting his training into action. 6 • ACTIV NEWS News and Updates The Doors to Bentley Open In November 2016, Activ began a project to consolidate our Kewdale, Palmyra, Embleton, Bentley and East Victoria Park Business Services sites into one, refurbished complex at Bentley. As on Monday 9 October, all five Business Service sites have now moved into Bentley. The transition of more than 400 supported employees and staff into Bentley is an outstanding achievement. An enormous amount of resilience, effort and innovation has been shown by everyone involved - including supported employees, their families and staff. The new centre is state-of-the-art with a range of purpose-built facilities including new recreation areas, a digital hub, training rooms, canteens and custom designed workspaces. The purpose of this project was to provide supported employees with greater choice and control in their work as were as ensure the sustainability of our business services. Our supported employees will now have a much larger range of employment opportunities including: • Airline cutlery packing • Airline headset refurbishment • Bed base manufacturing • Industrial packaging • And much more The centre was officially re-opened by the Honourable Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Disability Services, in a ceremony on 24 October. We are looking forward to seeing the great work at Bentley continue into the future. We believe in you• 7 Supported Employment Services Award In February the Fair Work Commission will review the Supported Employment Services Award, which is the national award that governs the employment of all supported employees by Disability Enterprises like Activ. The Award includes all of the Wage Assessment Tools that are used to calculate supported employee wages and includes the Greenacres tool that Activ uses. Advocates and unions will ask the Commission to remove all tools except the Supported Wage System (SWS). Why does this matter to Activ supported employees? The SWS tool measures how “productive” a supported employee is, that is, how fast they are at a job when compared to a person without disability. Tools like Greenacres also take into account the general abilities of a supported employee such as their ability to stay focused without encouragement; their ability to make decisions if things don’t go according to plan and the quality of their work. The SWS tool could increase wages by between 20% and 80% - we don’t know by how much. But we are concerned that supported employment might not be sustainable with increased costs like that. What is Activ doing? Activ is joining with other Disability Enterprises across Australia to make the case for a variety of Wage Assessment Tools (including Greenacres) to be included in the Award. If this is not possible, we will argue for additional funding so that the sector can continue to offer Supported Employment options for 20,000 people living with disability across Australia. Is this the same as the BSWAT decision? The BSWAT tool (which used to be in the Award) was challenged in the Federal Court. The Court ruled that the tool was discriminating to people living with disability. We believe that Greenacres and the other tools still in the Award are not discriminatory. How can I be heard as a supported employee, or a family member or carer for a supported employee? Families and workers can, and should, have their voices heard in this process. Our Voice Australia can help you to lodge documents for the Court to consider your views. Our Voice Australia is a non-funded voice for Australian families of people with moderate to severe intellectual disability and complex needs. Membership is free for people with disability and their families. For the last 3 years they have been representing families and supported employees in our Disability Enterprises before the Fair Work Commission. Their web-site is www.ourvoiceaustralia.org.au. You can contact them by phone on 0418 887 976 or by email at marywalsh6@bigpond.com.
