Welcome to Claremont College I wish you a warm welcome to Claremont College where you have the opportunity to step into your very exciting future. Taster Day is all about YOU and helping you with the transition to college life next year. Claremont College takes great pride in doing everything to help students reach their absolute potential! It starts from the moment you walk onto our fantastic campus with wonderful facilities. You will see in the picture below I’m sitting with Panda, our college dog who symbolises the friendly, safe and secure environment we provide. Taster Day is designed to give you a real feel for what to expect next year when you join us at Claremont College. From our excellent uniHUB to working alongside our amazing teachers, see what you can be part of in 2021. If you see yourself going off to university or taking on an apprenticeship or traineeship; you have certainly come to the right place. Claremont College helps every student step into an exciting future! You will see first-hand we have wonderful staff at the college who will do everything to accommodate your needs. All our staff are outstanding at what they do and we aim to have you find something that interests you to make your learning exciting. Please enjoy your day and don’t be shy to ask any questions and approach the staff for further information. You will even get to eat some tasty home-made pizza from our wood fired oven in our courtyard. Taster Day Enrolment Remember the main purpose of the day is to: • try out a variety of subjects • find out about options suited to your pathway • become familiar with Claremont College and • meet your teachers. You will participate in 4 sessions on Taster Day. Complete your personal details at the top of the enrolment form provided. Read the session descriptors in the program carefully. Select 4 choices that suit your future pathway in consultation with your teachers at school. List your choices in order of preference, and enter them in the box on the bottom of the enrolment form. Check you have entered the correct session name and code. Numbers 5 and 6 are reserve choices, in case we are unable to allocate one of your first 4 preferences. Collective school students - hand your completed enrolment form to your teacher. Subject Levels and Certificate Program Description The summary below will assist in your subject selection for Taster Day. The number next to a subject listing indicates the level of difficulty. Level 3 and 4 subjects • are the highest level at which you can study any subject • are academically challenging • require an A, B or C result in the equivalent Australian Curriculum subjects (Maths, English, Science and History) as prerequisites for Year 11 entry (*a “C” result entry will require consultation with your teacher) • have a theory component • have an externally assessed component – you will need to sit an exam and/or complete a folio of work • provide a pathway for entrance into university • should be explored at least once on Taster Day if you are thinking about university in the future. Level 1 and 2 subjects • develop skills and knowledge in an area • have no entry prerequisites from Year 10 • are general subjects that may follow on from high school studies • provide the foundation for specific Level 3 subjects • may be taken in conjunctions with Level 3 subjects • cover a broad range of abilities • include practical and applied learning subjects • use a variety of teaching and learning approaches to suit different interests and preferences. Vocational Education and Training Programs (VET) • result in nationally recognised qualifications • are industry aligned • focus on real, practical learning • deliver knowledge and skills valued by employers • may involve a work placement which uses on-the-job training and assessment • values previous learning and life experiences • leads onto further training e.g. TasTAFE courses • help you to gain entry into employment.

No. Option and Outline Subjects included 1 VISUAL ART • Art Practice 2 • Visual Art 2 Develop the artist within by learning how • Art Production 3 to think and work creatively. Undertake • Art Studio Practice 3 a practical art activity to explore some of the possibilities and mediums in this subject area. Look at some of our student work to see what you could achieve. This subject is designed for those who wish to have a career in the Arts or those who just like to be creative. This is a pathway to University Art School or TasTAFE. 2 PHOTOGRAPHY/ • Visual Art Photography 2 DIGITAL ART • Visual Art Digital Art 2 • Art Production Photography It’s a digital takeover, or is it? 3 Come and learn about the creative • Art Production Digital Art 3 possibilities of the digital art realm, • Art Studio Practice 3 and see the magic of the pre-digital age as well. We’ve got the best of both worlds. Look at some of our student work to see what you could achieve. For those students who wish to have a career in the Arts or those who just like to be creative. This is a pathway to University Art School or TasTAFE. 3 DRAMA • Drama- Foundations 2 • Musical Theatre 2 – Begin with some drama Performers warm-ups and try some • Drama 3 team building, • Theatre Performance 3 communication and character development exercises in our studio just like an actor. Experience a classroom environment like no other and hear about the different options for studying Drama and how useful it can be in future careers. Come along and join the fun! 4 DANCE • Dance 2 • Musical Theatre 2 - Dancers Visit our studio to take part in a • Dance Choreography and warm-up and some dance Performance 3 activities. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothing. The differences between the Level 2 and 3 subjects will be discussed and you will also receive information about the 2021 college musical and just how you could be dancing in it.
5 MEDIA PRODUCTION • Media Production – (VIDEO) Foundation 2 • Media Production 3 Work in our television studio, complete with a green screen. Try our new cameras. You can be an editor for the day adding effects to footage using our editing suites. See if a career in television, media, animation or film may be for you. 6 MUSIC • Contemporary Music 2 • Music Studies 2 Claremont College has a great • Musical Theatre 2 – Band tradition in music and you could • Music 3 be part of this in 2021. See the • UTAS Music performance, practice and recording facilities. Hear about the opportunities for individual and group tuition. There is a subject suiting every musical style and experience. You will be able to discuss which is best for you. Hear some of our current students perform and join in on a rehearsal. Learn how you could be part of the 2021 musical band or College Show Band. 7 MUSIC TECHNOLOGY • Music Technology Projects – Foundation 2 Use our master studio to record • UTAS Music Technology a live music performance and Projects experiment with the technology to produce a scratch demo. Try some audio design tools and find out what it takes to be a music technologist. 8 BUSINESS • Business Studies - Foundation 2 Would you like to earn an • Computing (Business) 2 entry-level salary of $50,000? • Business Studies 3 Would you like to travel and work with others to find solutions to the local, national and global problems we are facing? If you study a business subject you will develop a broad knowledge of customers, markets, finance, operations, strategy, business policy, communications and IT. You will facilitate your career progression making it easier to climb into management-level positions with even higher salaries and greater opportunities. Sound good? 9 ENGLISH LEVEL 2 • English Applied 2 • English Foundations 2 Are you better at English than you think you are? We use English: • communicating with friends, at school, at work or in the community • to understand movies, memes and messages on social media. Claremont College offers the English 2 subjects – English Applied and English Foundations. Importantly, English provides you with the literacy tick towards your TCE. Join this workshop with some friends to learn more and explore your talent. 10 ENGLISH LEVEL 3 • English 3 • English Literature 3 Which Level 3 English should you • English Writing 3 choose? What texts are studied and what sort of assignment work is required? Whether you are considering a university pathway or just want to develop your thinking and communication skills to a high level, these subjects are a valuable foundation for your work in many other areas. Come along and find out which of the three subjects is right for your needs and sample some short activities that will help you to pin down the differences between them. 11 LEGAL STUDIES • Legal Studies - Foundation 2 • Legal Studies 3 Learn about our criminal justice system by piecing together what happened in the Lindy Chamberlain case several decades ago. By knowing about what can go wrong in police investigations and trials, you will start to understand how our legal system should work. 12 HISTORY AND SOCIETY • History and the Environment 2 “History repeats itself. So, you might wanna • Ancient History 3 pay attention.” (Quavo, American rapper) • Modern History 3 History is a puzzle. When we study it, facts can change before our eyes. Mysteries are explored, new causes revealed and different perspectives uncovered. Those who study history should think of themselves as truth seekers. If you are interested in history, which history should you choose to study? Come along and get answers to these questions. We will test some of these ideas while sampling some brief activities.
13 INTRODUCTION TO • Introduction to Sociology SOCIOLOGY AND and Psychology 2 PSYCHOLOGY Come along and play some brain games, explore how we decide between right and wrong and begin to unpack one of the most important and rapidly changing features of today’s society: technology. Throughout this session you will get a taste of what you will study in Introduction to Sociology and Psychology. 14 PSYCHOLOGY AND • Sociology 3 SOCIOLOGY • Psychology 3 Explore the human mind and our society; how we think, learn behave and interact with the world and each other. Why do some people conform to the rules, while others are deviant? Visit our Behavioural Studies suite and hear the answers to these questions and hear about the benefits of studying these pre-tertiary subjects. We will also discuss the difference between Level 2 and 3 subjects. 15 WORKING WITH CHILDREN • Working with Children 2 We love children! This Working with Children course is the ideal first step for students wishing to pursue a promising career in child care. The first few years of a child’s life are the most formative, so if you are passionate about children, come along to our session that includes an overview of the course with a practical activity children would love added to the mixture. 16 HEALTH EDUCATION • Food and Nutrition 3 • Health Studies 3 Want to know if it’s really true that • Sport Science 3 Australians make 51.5 million visits to • Sport Science – Foundation 2 fast food restaurants every month? • Personal Health and Have you ever wondered why top Wellbeing 2 athletes “choke” in pressure situations, what DOMS is, or why risk taking is important for teenagers? These answers and more will be answered in this fact- finding session.
17 OUTDOOR EDUCATION • Outdoor Leadership 3 • Outdoor Education 2 If being outdoors excites you, then this is the session for you. Come inside and check out the rock climbing wall here at the college, get an idea of the cool outdoor spaces near Claremont and find out about the fantastic Outdoor Ed equipment the college has to offer. There are two different courses, so be sure to ask questions to ensure you have all you need for an exciting future in the outdoors. 18 PHYSICAL EDUCATION • Community Sport and Recreation 1 Get in and get physical in a snapshot of • Athlete Development 2 what the Physical Education Department has to offer. From the gymnasium to the fitness centre and cool outdoor spaces around the college, this session will get your blood pumping. Learn more about pathways in the personal health and fitness industries and decide what physically active class will best fit you in 2021. 19 MATHS LEVEL 2 • Workplace Maths 2 • General Mathematics - Investigate ways of collecting data and put Foundation 2 your measuring skills to the test. Explore real-world Maths and the skills that will help you move into an adult world such as understanding payslips and tax refunds. Hear about the importance of Maths for your TCE and how you can achieve the necessary numeracy tick. 20 MATHS LEVEL 3 AND • Mathematics Methods - LEVEL 4 Foundation 3 • General Mathematics 3 Try your hand at solving a world- • Mathematics famous mind-bending problem. Methods 4 Investigate the pathways that • Mathematics higher-level Mathematics leads • Specialised 4 towards at university for careers in Architecture, Medicine, Engineering and Astronomy. Practice using the Casio graphics calculator. Examine the extension of your mathematical experience into calculus and beyond, pushing yourself to move beyond the boundaries of Level 2 Maths into a new and exciting realm where the world can be examined through mathematical modelling.
21 LIFE SCIENCES • Life Sciences 2 • Biology 3 From bacteria to the Blue whale • Environmental Science 3 these subjects are all about life and the environment! Explore where you came from with a college-style lecture on human evolution. Examine primate model skulls and life-size human model skeletons. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about the natural sciences including Life Science, Biology and Environmental Science and where these subjects could take you in the future! 22 PHYSICAL SCIENCES • Physical Sciences - Foundation 2 Dive into the physical world by undertaking an • Physical Sciences 3 analytical chemistry procedure called titration • Chemistry 4 or gaze into the structure of atoms through • Physics 4 spectroscopy. Get firsthand experience on our specialist equipment. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about Physical Sciences, Chemistry and Physics. 23 COMPUTER GRAPHICS, • Computer Graphics and AND HOUSING AND Design – Foundation 2 DESIGN • Computer Graphics and Design 3 Interested in designing for the • Housing and Design 3 future, whether it be 2D or 3D computer graphics, technical drawing, 3D modelling, interior design, illustration, engineering, architecture, industrial design, or character animation; these classes may be for you. 25 AGRICULTURE AND ANIMAL • Agricultural Enterprise 2 STUDIES • VET Certificate II in Animal Studies Do you have an interest in working with animals in a vet clinic, pet shop or on a farm? Are you interested in growing your own plants and cuttings? Then come and find out about Certificate II in Animal Studies and Agricultural Enterprise. Undertake a vet check of our college chooks and rabbits, check for aphids in the orchard plus experience some pruning of the fruit trees. 26 AUTOMOTIVE STUDIES • Automotive and Mechanical Technologies 2 Visit our automotive workshops • VET Certificates II in and take part in the servicing of Automotive Vocational a 5hp engine. Hear about all the automotive options offered. 27 DESIGN AND PRODUCTION • Design and Production – WOOD AND METAL Wood 2 • Design and Production - Interested in working in the areas of wood Metal 2 or metal using industrial grade fabrication equipment? Come and experience Claremont’s well-equipped workshops and be introduced to the types of projects undertaken and the techniques used to complete them. We will also discuss the career pathways that workshop experience can lead to. 28 FOODS • Food & Cooking Essentials 1 Do you like cooking? Do you enjoy eating • Food, Cooking and Nutrition the fruits of your labour? If so, come along 2 to a very exciting cooking session. Learn • Food and Nutrition 3 how to make your own individual Danish pastry and hear about the diverse range of cookery courses at Claremont College.
29 COMMUNITY SERVICES • VET Certificate II in Community Services with a Aged Care, Disability and Childcare are rapidly focus on Aged Care & growing employment sectors in Tasmania. Disability There are many opportunities in these • VET Certificate II in vocations. Come and find out what it means to Community Services with a work in the health care or childcare sector and focus on Children’s Services learn what our courses are all about – what • Working with Children 2 you do, the work placements involved and where this might lead you. Participate in a practical activity and learn what other subjects will assist you to continue with further education and/or find work in the health, disability, aged care or childcare industry. This might be the future for you! 30 CONSTRUCTION • VET Certificate II in Construction Scaffold Challenge! • Construction Pathways If you are interested in working in the building and construction industry, this is the session for you! Come and explore our workshop, find out about this subject and join in the group scaffold challenge activity, where you will construct an aluminium scaffold tower. 31 DEFENCE SKILLS • VET Certificate I in Defence Skills The Claremont College Defence Force Cadets program, for students wishing to enter the Defence Force or emergency services, is the only program of its kind offered in Tasmania. This session will outline what the course is all about, the selection process involved and the possible career opportunities that are available after completing this program. You will also take part in a team building activity, so make sure you wear comfortable clothing. 32 ELECTROTECHNOLOGY • VET Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career This program is for those students wishing Start) to undertake a pathway into the electrical trades. Come and have a look at our newly developed workshop and be informed about what subject choices will best prepare you for the electrical careers. The session will give you the opportunity to discuss what the program is all about and engage in some of the practical techniques used in the trade.
33 HAIRDRESSING • VET Certificate II in Salon Assistant Visit the Claremont College Hairdressing Salon and discuss what happens in the Hairdressing program. Learn what other college subjects you should be studying to secure a career in the hairdressing industry. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a practical hairdressing activity. 34 HOSPITALITY • VET Certificate II in Hospitality Do you want to work in the Hospitality • VET Certificate II in Kitchen Industry? Do you like working with other Operations people? Working in Hospitality can help you gain employment in cafes, restaurants, hotels and coffee shops. Come along and see the commercial kitchen, hear about the range of courses here at Claremont College and participate in a practical activity. 35 RETAIL COSMETICS • VET Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics The beauty industry is turning into a growth industry of the future. Come and find out how to kick start your beauty career with Claremont College and learn about your pathways into the beauty industry. You will also participate in a practical activity learning how to make lip gloss and a sugar skin rub. This might be the future for you. 36 TOURISM • VET Certificate II in Tourism ‘Tasmania is where it’s at….’ On average, Tasmania receives over one million visitors a year. The tourism and travel industry offers exciting current and future work and life opportunities for young people. This course is for those students who are interested in developing foundation knowledge and skills to undertake a range of pathways in this industry. The session will focus on some course tasters, a Tasmania quiz, and a team business activity.
