Overview ABOUT THE PROGRAMME Wings Over Wairarapa Air Festival (Wings) is held every two years at Hood Aerodrome in Masterton, Wairarapa. Wings attracts around 25,000 visitors over 3 days (Friday to Sunday), and is the biggest air festival in the North Island. In 2019, Wings ran its inaugural STEM programme (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) targeted to school-aged youth. It was a huge success. Adapting to the feedback received from educators to incorporate creativity as well as careers and vocational aspects, we added the 'A' (Arts) to make it a STEAM programme and have also developed a careers and vocational offering. The programme has grown to become a permanent feature of the Wings groundside experience - now called Take Flight. Take Flight runs for all three days of the festival. On Friday (practice and arrivals day for aircraft) we hold a Schools Day, and invite every local school - in 2019 over 4000 teachers and students attended Schools Day (from years 0 to 13), and in 2021 over 4500. The combination of aircraft flying overhead, and hands-on interactive, engaging activities and demonstrations provides an authentic experience to remember. On Saturday and Sunday, Take Flight is offered to all festival ticket holders in a less structured way, and our activity providers have autonomy over how they deliver their activities and engage with young people. This provides opportunities for the whole family to be involved and encourage conversations around study and career choices. Take Flight adopts a broad interpretation of aviation or flight, and incorporates aerospace, ballooning, skydiving and astronomy into the programme, to name a few. In 2023, we look forward to launching Take Flight and offering even more experiences and opportunities for youth to learn about the creativity and innovation involved in STEAM, and the wider touch points of everything flight and aerospace. aims of the programme WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE to inspire young people to consider a STEAM related course of study or career, to provide educational opportunities to support schools and the wider community to promote flight and aerospace to seek ways to improve accessibility to STEAM education opportunities, particularly for ffemales, emales, Māori and Pasifika students, and rural schools to strengthen the purpose and future viability of our air festival and related industries 01
What is the programme about? From small group, quiet workshops, to large scale noisy demonstrations and stage shows - Take Flight caters for several modes of delivery. TAKE FLIGHT STATIONS Take Flight Stations are usually provided in marquees, and are highly interactive activities within a defined space. These activities may be trying a simulator, VR or AR equipment, operating a small robot, or trying 3-D printing. Suited to groups of around 10 - 25 TAKE FLIGHT FREESTYLE Freestyle activities are outside, and more ‘demo’ than interactive - but still very engaging, and suited to larger audiences. Get up close or inside an aircraft, electric bus, massive tractor, balloon or parachute envelope, watch a glider being de-rigged or some drone racing. Experts will be encouraging audience engagement and questions as you wander around, but if you just want to watch, there is plenty happening in the air, and loads of amazing aircraft to look at. Talk to hangar owners who have brought their aircraft out, and find out what it's like to spend your time at an aerodrome, and to own or work on aircraft. TAKE FLIGHT SMALL STEAM Our Take Flight Small STEAM area is for new entrants to Year 3. These play-based STEAM activities are under shade, with water provided. This provides valuable activities for this age group and less pressure to adhere to schedules and walking across a large site. 02
TAKE FLIGHT STAGE Stage shows, demos and short presentations will be offered during the three days by a wide variety of experts in aviation, space, science and other STEAM related areas. The stage is outdoors, and shows or presentations are professional & engaging, with space for several hundred people in the audience. AND YES, OUR PARTNER NANOGIRL LABS IS LOCKED IN FOR 2023! TAKE FLIGHT WORKSHOPS Workshops are limited in numbers. Most are 2 or 3 hours long, and in a more quiet space so that students get maximum value out of the expert teaching on offer. On Schools Day, limited spaces in workshops are allocated evenly across schools . On the weekend, these can be booked by members of the public for a charge. Nominated senior students have opportunities to support these workshops in an area that interests them. 03
Take FLIGHT years 10 to 13 2023 sees the launch of 'senior students-only' aspects of the programme. As these senior students contemplate their transition out of school and into the flight path of their future, these new aspects of the programme provide an engaging way to delve deeper into opportunities and hear others' experiences. TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS Tertiary Education providers will engage with senior students about pathways to study, subject selection, campus life and degree/qualification options BUSINESSES AND INDUSTRY ORGANISATIONS Organisations, industry associations, local and central government, and individual businesses from a vast range of sectors will be on hand to engage with senior students. These representatives will share information about both the well known and the lesser known opportunities that exist for young people who have a passion, a talent or just an initial interest in a particular area. MENTORS AND YOUTH ALREADY IN EMPLOYMENT or STUDY Senior students will hear from young people who have already embarked on an opportunity or pathway, and find out about their experience, their journey and their advice. This is a great chance for senior students to engage with people they can relate to, LIGHTNING TALKS Series of short, focused, engaging talks designed to spark interest and inspire senior students to find out more about an area they may be interested in. From industry professionals to recent school leavers themselves. SENIORS ONLY WORKSHOPS Workshops available for selected senior students to extend an existing talent or passion. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EVENT MANAGER Nominated students interested in Event Management get to experience working with the event team at Wings 23. 05
GET INVOLVED HOW TO GET A PIECE OF THE WINGS STEAM PROGRAMME Sponsor or donate It wouldn't be possible to deliver Take Flight for free to our region's schools without the generous support of businesses within the region. By sponsoring the programme or elements of it, not only will your organisation have access to promotional opportunities but you'll also be a key enabler for a meaningful experience! Get in touch if you would like to find out more about the programme and the opportunities. Provide activities Pass on your expertise, guidance and knowledge to tomorrow's engineers, technicians, programmers, designers and creative directors, pilots and more. Providers participate for a variety of reasons: to fulfil their education or community outreach aims, to promote their own organisation or training programmes, or out of a desire to ‘give back’ or inspire youth to achieve or enter a pathway to an aviation or other STEAM career. Opportunities exist to recover costs on Saturday and Sunday. Sign up to be a Wings Take Flight volunteer or mentor Help us out on Schools Day or on the weekend. We have plenty of roles from helping get students safely onto the site, to helping with workshops or activities, sharing your knowledge, mentoring, or helping students find where they need to be. And if you are an engaging presenter, consider providing a lightning talk or presentation. GET IN touch Interested in being involved or finding out more? FEEDBACK FROM SCHOOLS It was such a fantastic day (again!). We loved having the chance to go again and I know that every child had a fab time. An active, learning day for our students and staff. The children really enjoyed the hands on activities, and all of the planes flying A fantastic day and totally worthwhile for our students as was stimulating and something many wouldn't be able to experience and get up close to LOVED LOVED LOVED it - thanks soooo much for hosting us - would LOVE to go again. Highlight of our kids year so far This is a real highlight for us and we love having the opportunity to take the whole school Thank you for the huge amount of work, it was a fantastic learning experience Great day out. Will definitely choose more of the workshops for the students to participate in next time FROM STEM ACTIVITY PROVIDERS As my first time participating in a program like this I wasnt sure what to expect, but seeing the smiles and faces of about 500-600 kids that climbed up on the Harvard and got to see inside a Warbird made it all worth it. I would very much like to be a part of this again and now I know how I could make it even better. We got really good value out of the event and were privileged to be such a big part of the STEM day. We have had good engagement from the region following and overall, it was a great event! We're very much looking forward to a continued involvement in the event, and the STEM program especially. We're already thinking up more innovative and interesting ways to presents our sports, and to give people more of a hands-on experience, especially young people. Without exception it was parents saying to children “we really need to go now” as opposed to children looking bored and tugging their parents away! The obvious engagement of adult and child alike and the lovely way in which it encouraged engagement between them 08
