20 NIC MAGAZINE 2017 NEW INVENTION: Biodegradable trays A part of our environmental work is to review our packaging, etc. One step in the right direction is that we have replaced the damagepreventive inserts that protects and keeps our waffles in place. They were previously made of polystyrene, but now they are made of a biodegradable and compostable material that is more environmentally friendly. Nic goes eco! The demand for organic products is growing. Therefore, our focus on an organic range feels very well-timed. In May, we are launching Nic Organic topping in our three most popular flavours – strawberry, chocolate and caramel. At the same time, we are releasing the Nic Organic Waffle – a delicious organic waffle. The products meet the EU requirements of organic labelling and the toppings are launched in a smaller bottle (0.5 L), which is a smart solution for decreasing food waste. The bottle is also more manageable for those who work with ice cream daily. For the 2017 season, there will also be biodegradable cups and flat spoons in our range under the concept Bio Choice. The cups are FSC-labelled and compostable. The green symbol with a leaf should be present on all packaged organic food produced in the EU. The requirements for the Euro Leaf are clear: a food item may only be called organic if at least 95% of its agricultural commodities is organic. 20 NIC-MAGASIN | SOMMER 2017
NIC MAGAZINE 2017 21 No palm oil in Nic topping sauces! The Nic Group is part of the Orkla group and comply with the available policies and guidelines regarding palm oil, among other products. Here at Nic, ongoing long-term work is carried out to find replacement products as well as reduce the use of palm oil. In cases where we are unable to find other options, we use certified, segregat- ed palm oil that is traceable in accordance with RSPO (Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil). In 2017, we will be able to say that all our topping sauces are produced without palm oil. Nic is proud of this! FACTS ABOUT PALM OIL: • Palm oil and palm kernel oil are natural vegetable oils from the fruit of oil palms. • It is used as a raw material in many foods and is pro- duced on a large scale in for example Southeast Asia. Unfortunately, this can lead to tropical deforestation, loss of biodiversity and have implications for those working on the plantations. To make it easy for our costumers we mark our organic and biodegradable products with two new symbols. Look for Eco choice and Bio choice!
