Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:04 Page 5 NEWSLINE NEW LISBURN DEPOT FOR DA FORGIE RECENT moves by manufacturers such as Doosan, Case, Merlo, Wacker Neuson, New Holland or Avant to appoint single, full line dealers has certainly proved to be a major advantage for the manufacturers as well as for the new dealer. The most recent manufacturer to consolidate is Kubota who have appointed DA Forgie in Limavady as the sole dealer for its contruction equipment products. Forgie is also the sole Kubota agricultural tractor dealer in N. Ireland and an area dealer for hortcultural and groundcare products. Equip talked recently to David Forgie and daughter Ria about their new 6,400 sq.m. facility which has just opened in Lisburn. “Limavady is not the end of the world and has served us very well for all of the 42 years we have been in business but it is going to be much easier with a depot in Lisburn to handle our ever increasing agri and construction sales. The lines of communication to the customer will now be much shorter. We have built up a considerable customer base over the years and Andrew McMullan who handles sales and lives in this area, will now be based in the Lisburn depot,“ says David Forgie. “We have decided to align our agricultural product offering with Kubota‘s recent move into the higher horsepower agri market. The new depot will cement our plans for a major sales expansion of both Merlo and Kubota in the area. “I feel I should stress however, that this depot has been in the planning for some time, well before the new Kubota dealer arrangements were made. I see it as a means of pushing large 100 hp plus tractor sales in the south of the Province as we are now the exclusive tractor dealer for Kubota as well as pushing to increase sales of Merlo telehandlers to both the agri and construction sectors. “We secured a new M7131 for the opening and with the rest of the new M7001 Kubota range of larger 135, 150 and 170hp tractors due to put in an appearance in the coming months, I wanted this depot up and running well before that. “In addition to the M7131 we are also showing the new KC70VHD-4 tracked dumper, RT270D compact wheeled loader, RTV utility vehicles and examples of the Kubota KX and U series of mini excavators. On the Merlo side we have the new 4.1 tonne, 10 metre, Merlo TF42.7 in addition to some construction models. The new Kubota ranges will be formally launched at Balmoral Show in May and our proximity to the new Balmoral Park will make it considerably easier to work the stand effectively.“ EXCELLENT LISBURN TEAM David‘s daughter Rea is managing the new location with other appointments including service engineer Raymond Cairns, parts manager Trevor Malcolmson and stores manager, Harry Marks. “This is an extremely exciting time for our business. We have put together an excellent team for this new location and it is already staring to bear fruit with the first sales about to be confirmed. The stores have already been stocked,“ she told Equip. “The depot is 6,400 sq. m which includes a trade counter, spare parts facility with an online ordering option and service workshop.“ In addition to the extended Kubota construction and agri range and Merlo telehandlers, Service engineer Raymond Cairns, branch the depot will also be stocked with Comet aerial platforms launched at Balmoral Show last manager Ria Forgie, Andrew McMullan, year, Ifor Williams trailers made available through Lamont Trailers, Kersten pto brushes as sales, parts manager Trevor Malcolmson well as a full range of spare parts for all makes. and stores manager, Harry Marks Sam Thompson, Kubota‘s dealer manager for Ireland commented: “Kubota has undertaken a major investment and commitment with the launch of its new range of mainsteam agricultural tractors – the M7001 Series. We believe that DA Forgie is the best partner to help us enter this sector in Northern Ireland.“ Info: D.A. Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:04 Page 8 NEWSLINE KUBOTA EXTENDING RANGES Although the new Lisburn depot will be busy enough with Kubota and Merlo sales, part of the reason David Forgie is so optimistic about the future is primarily the extension of the Kubota range of tractors to higher horsepower machines as well as the recent arrival of the new range of articulated wheeled loaders and tracked dumpers. Kubota’s new RT and RO Series compact wheeled loaders are specially designed to suit a variety construction applications and public works. The machines have been developed to ensure maximum efficiency, safety and flexibility for users. The latest models introduced to the company’s RT Series line-up incorporate a 45- degree articulation-oscillating angle, making it easy for users to fit through tight spaces without damaging surfaces when carrying out tasks. Hydrostatic transmission and a high performance pump also work together to deliver maximum performance on site. Heavy-duty axles with a maximum capacity of 12 tonnes allow for a travelling speed of up to 25km per hour on the RT270 and a tipping load of 2600 that rivals that of its competitors. The entire range of RT compact wheel loaders provide all round visibility and extra strong pivoting articulation. The RO65 and RO85 compact wheeled loaders have undergone significant developments to offer a long dumping reach and high dumping clearance, facilitating ease of use and end user functionality. They are also perfectly suited for pallet fork operations, making it a compelling proposition for hirers. Superior breakout force, high levels of manoeuvrability and excellent stability make the RO wheeled loaders the perfect choice for use in all working conditions. A major benefit of the two models is their ability to be transported between job sites securely due to an overall height below 2500mm, allowing the machines to pass easily under road bridges when transported on a trailer between sites. Neil Winfield, Kubota Construction’s business development manager, commented: “We already head the market in mini excavator sales, so the RT and RO compact wheeled loader products are a natural addition to our current offering, giving our end users the complete Kubota solution. We have put in extensive work to manufacture these machines, ensuring that they can deliver on performance, ease of operation and comfort. “Health and safety will always be integral to the construction industry, so improved visibility for the operator on site is a key point of difference for the new models. Also for end user satisfaction, we have made significant developments to ensure that the operator can comfortably spend extended periods of time in the cab, which is key for increased productivity and minimum downtime.” Kubota starts full-scale Tractor production Kubota’s global move into large scale farming market got another step closer recently when the company invited key European suppliers to the official opening of Kubota Farm Machinery (KFM) – the new full-scale production facility in Northern France that is manufacturing the company’s flagship M7001 Series. The 37,000 sq m factory, the result of a 40 million euro investment by Kubota Corporation to accelerate the global development of its agricultural machinery business, will manufacture up to 3,000 tractors in its first two years of production for the European, North American, Oceania and Japanese markets. Kubota’s M7001 is cliamed to be the cleanest, most technical and powerful tractor the company has ever built. Manufactured to fulfil the stringent requirements of large-scale upland farming across the European and North American agricultural markets, it is available in three models from 130HP to 170HP (M7131, M7151 and M7171). Rob Edwards, Kubota UK’s business development manager for its agricultural division, commented: “Our new M7001 Series is going to be the pride of the Kubota brand and this production facility is the entity that is going to drive this forward.” The M7001 Series is ideal for carrying out a wide range of jobs on both mixed and arable farms and comes with a host of features to maximise performance, reliability and operator comfort and control. The M7001 Series is available with a choice of high performance and efficient powershift or continuously variable transmissions, giving the user the option to match the transmission to his farming needs. When carrying materials at low speeds, or when traction is key, operators can switch the M7001 to ECO mode, which reduces engine speed while maintaining a travelling speed of either 40km/h or 50km/h. This feature, alongside the inclusion of an extra large fuel (330 litres) tank, helps to extend intervals between refuelling, maximise user productivity and minimise downtime.
Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:04 Page 10 NEWSLINE EXCLUSIVE DEALER AWARD FOR COWAN BROS AT the recent Case 2016 Dealer Convention held in Italy, both of CASE’s Irish dealers were officially recognised for their success with the brand. Cowan Brothers with bases in Eglinton and Mallusk received the ‘Dealer of the Year 2015’ award for the EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Asia) region and Jim Macadam Equipment from Dublin was presented with ‘The Spirit of CASE’ award 2015. ‘Dealer of the Year’ was awarded in recognition of overall performance, volume of growth and brand representation in the market. When Equip talked to managing director David Cowan he was still a little surprised at the honour. “My father and I went over to Italy to our normal dealer event and it came as a major shock when we were announced as the Dealer of the Year. “We have been with CASE from October 2014 and during this time we have had great success with the product and working with their team. The experience with CASE has exceeded all our expectations and it’s great to be involved with a company that has such a focused vision of the future. We are confident that CASE will go from strength to strength and we are happy to be part of that. “After just over one year of trading in our new Mallusk depot, this is a tremendous accolade to be given when you consider some of the major dealers from very high prestige regions. It means we must have been doing something right in 2015. “Although this award was from the construction side of CNH, we are also doing well with Case IH, the agri side of the business that we represent for counties Derry, Antrim and Down where we have boosted our market share.“ LONG STANDING LEVELS OF SERVICE The Spirit of CASE award was presented to Jim Macadam Equipment in recognition of heritage and loyalty to the brand, long standing high levels of service and backup, plus brand representation in the market. Director, Darren Macadam said: “CASE has been a great success in Ireland for Macadam’s, built on high quality backup and service. With the launch of further new models in the new D Series excavator range, and judging from the sales achieved in late December and early January in Ireland for Macadam’s, the D series is set to continue the trend of higher market share in Ireland for CASE.” BALMORAL SHOW ’SOLD OUT‘ WITH just over two months to go, the organisers of Balmoral Show have once again hoisted the ‘Sold Out‘ signs with 700 stands booked for the 148th, three day event. Stand co-ordinator David Laidlaw is delighted that in the agri and construction equipment sectors, there has been a 99.9% retention rate by exhibitors – with two additional construction sector exhibitors able to book stands. “We have really been full again from the middle of December when we closed to all stand requests. The addition this year of the Eikon Centre has given us quite a few logistical problems but we were able to get a dry run with the Winter Fair and more recently with the Maze Show. Many more exhibitors than usual requested additional outdoor stand space but again, there simply is none available. “25% of the Eikon space will be given back to Government departments as they have been evicted from their usual stands in order to house the Eikon. A further 150 small stands will then go into the Eikon. “Outside, the layouts will be rougly similar to last year but with some major repositioning to allow for the Eikon footprint. “We will have new improved directional signage to go up, new show maps to allow for a better visitor flow and we wil have a new Balmoral Show mobile phone app ready in time which will also allow vistors to punch in their GPS location in the car parks on entry and be able to find their cars a lot easier on exit.“ 10 equipjan/feb’16

Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 12 NEWSLINE EXCLUSIVE EMS COMPLETES DOOSAN NETWORK AFTER much speculation over the final dealer territory in Ireland, EMS (Embankment Machinery Sales) based in Saggart, Dublin has been awarded the Doosan dealership for Leinster joining Adare Machinery who already handle Doosan heavy line for Munster and Connaught as well as Bobcat for 23 counties in Ireland. Northern Excavators are the exclusive Doosan and Bobcat dealers for the old nine county territory of Ulster – N. Ireland plus Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal. It was being mooted at one time that Doosan may have gone down the full line dealer route by expanding the territory of one of the existing dealers with the possible addition of extra depots but at a time when the excavator market is showing signs of recovery, an enlargement of already large territories might have been a logistical nightmare. Anthony Pearce, Doosan regional manager – Northern Europe, commented: “We are delighted to be able to appoint EMS as the new Doosan dealer for Leinster. The company has an excellent reputation and offers extensive experience in both the Irish construction equipment market and the Doosan range, which will be key in further increasing our market share in Ireland.” Headed up by Seamus Flynn and Eamon O'Loughlin, EMS was established in 1989. Seamus Flynn said: “We are very pleased to be representing the Doosan brand. We have been associated with Doosan for many years and are passionate about the fabulous product lineup. “With the latest Stage IV machines, there have been huge increases in the specification of the Doosan range, providing even better value for money for our customers. With enhanced performance and a host of advanced features available as standard that are only provided as options by other machines on the market, customers are very imnpressed with what Dooisanb have to offer. As a partner, Doosan is very easy to do business with and they are equally focused as EMS on regaining market share and posoition.” Anthony Pearce added: “EMS has begun strongly with several Doosan machine sales early in the new dealership. We are also encouraged by the recovery in the Irish market, where activity levels are improving all the time.” Under the new agreement with Doosan Construction Equipment, EMS has exclusivity for sales and service in Leinster for the full range of Doosan crawler and wheeled excavators from 3 to 53 tonne and the full range of Doosan wheel loader models with bucket capacities from 1.9 to 4.8 m3. In addition, EMS is selling the Doosan range of mini-excavators throughout the Republic. Aftersales service is a crucial part of the offer from EMS (www.emsmachinery.com) and the company prides itself on its professional aftersales and product support. The service department at the Dublin headquarters provides a complete field and workshop service operation for the Irish market. All the staff at EMS offer many years of experience and all the company’s engineers are factory-trained in the wide breadth of applications and maintenance procedures for Doosan equipment. Customers will benefit from the company’s well-established on-site service network, covering everything from emergency repairs to routine maintenance. As well as covering existing contracts, EMS provides flexible service agreements depending on the requirements of the customer and will also be providing the optrion of full service contracts on all new Doosan equipment. REST OF IRELAND Limerick-based Adare Machinery, established by David and Marian Cuddy in 1984, were appointed Doosan and Bobcat dealers in March last year with exclusivity for sales and service in Munster and Connacht for Doosan crawler and wheeled excavators from 8 to 53 tonne and the Doosan range of wheel loader models with bucket capacities from 1.9 to 4.8 m3. The company is also a dealer for Doosan wheel loaders in Leinster into the waste sector. For the Bobcat range of compact equipment, including skid-steer, compact tracked and all wheel steer loaders, compact excavators, telescopic handlers and attachments, Adare Machinery is the authorised dealer for the whole of Southern Ireland. Northern Excavators based in Hillsborough, Co. Down is one of Doosan‘s oldest dealers taking on Daewoo excavators at SED in May 1987 and selling Daewoo‘s first two excavators in Europe, a DH120 and a DH180, at Balmoral Show the following week. Bobcat full line products followed in 2011. Their territory covers the six counties of N. Ireland as well as counties Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan. 12 equipjan/feb’16

Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 14 NEWSLINE Next Generation Joins Northern Excavators MANY of the proprietor lead plant dealerships established in the 1960‘s and ‘70‘s have had to address the sometimes thorny issue of succession as they reach a natural handover point. Some have handled this with management buy outs and ins, others with a straight sale but by far the majority have worked within the immediate family looking to second and and third generation succession. The most recent has been Northern Excavators established in the late 1960‘s by respected industry veteran Clifford Lilburn. With the company now into its fifth decade, Clifford‘s 22 year old grandson Ben Lilburn is destined to be the next in line to take on the mantle of the Doosan, Bobcat and Atlas Copco franchise as Ben‘s father Andrew and brother Matthew are already involved in other divisions within the Group. Despite seeing his destiny mapped out in front of him, Ben is pretty philosophical about the impending responsibility as he explained recently to Equip: “Its one thing knowing where you are supposed to be going but getting there can still present a lot of hurdles and problems.“ Ben has recently returned to Northern Ireland after taking over a year out in Canada, where he wasn‘t exactly idle, spending his time working in Calgary – as a heavy duty mechanic mostly on Caterpillar machinery. “On leaving school I came straight into Northern Excavators at the blunt end and served my time for five years as a mechanic, mostly on Daewoos and Doosans so although I was fairly well grounded on the mechanical side, the introduction into sales has been educational. “Although I am the boss‘s grandson, there is still an established management structure within the company that I have to take notice of and realise I am on the bottom rung. “Our sales manager Dennis Watson has been with Clifford for nearly 50 years since the company started and Stanis Dougherty has also been with us for over 40 years. My cousin David Lilburn has also been handling mainly Bobcat and Doosan sales for some five years so I work closely with him and together we hope to expand the brands and Northern Excavators. “I have to bed myself in gently, not expect any favours and above all don‘t give an impression of the silver spoon. I doubt if I would get away with it in any case. “I meet new and long established clients every day and knowing the mechanics of the ranges is definitely a help when talking on site and although I have been on the stand over the years, Balmoral Show this year will be my first major exhibition and I am looking forward to it. ‘I know its a cliche, but so far, despite knowing the workings of the company quite well, the learning curve has been steep getting immersed in all the models in the Doosan and Bobcat ranges, visiting the manufacturing locations and putting faces to all the names at Doosan. “I am handling some clients of my own now and this will build with experience but I am still mostly riding tandem with my three mentors. Ben concluded: “Next year looks as if we will get off to a reasonable start on sales but I am in no doubt that there is a degree of expectation and it will undoubtedly be a personal challenge.“ Info: Northern Excavators, Hillsborough. Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 16 NEWSLINE MAZE SHOW OPENS WITH FULL HOUSE AJS Promotions, organisers of the Fintona and Cavan Shows, have confirmed that this week‘s third Q8 Oils Machinery Event event at Balmoral Park will open to a full house of well over 90 exhibitors boasting well over 100 stands. THIS year‘s event will again showcase all leading tractor, agricultural & construction machinery manufacturers and will feature a number of new launches from across the agricultural & construction spectrum together with a wide range of agricultural and general sundry items. AJS managing director Andrew Short told Equip: “The inaugural Q8 Oils Machinery Show at the Balmoral Park in 2014 was a great success with very positive feedback from exhibitors and customers alike. After last year it is great to be able to confirm that the majority of the major dealers are all back with quite a few taking much larger stands. “We will also have the enormous benefits of the new Eikon Center for this year‘s event and this gives us added height for machinery like telehandlers as well as greater parking space and accessibility, heated areas, toilets and a generally more customer friendly venue. “Virtually all existing exhibitors have requested larger stands for this year and we have numerous new exhibitors who have also booked like M. Large and Ballyward Plant Sales. “The Eikon has enabled us to be at least 40% larger and the amount of business anticipated over the two days would indicate that the timing of this event, just ahead of Balmoral Show, is ideal and the prestigious venue perfect to showcase the latest farm and construction machinery at a location that is easily reached from throughout Ireland. “I am delighted with the level of response. We have contacted many more of the traditional distributors of construction equipment but some are still wary of pre-empting Balmoral Show. I don‘t think this is the case as fears that this show would be traded off against the Fintona event for instance, have proved groundless as we have not noticed any significant decline in stand booking with Fintona which was sold out again last month. “In the past it has been noted that attendance at Fintona comes very much from the surrounding areas with few visitors from the east or north of the Province and I am delighted that this exhibition caters more for audiences in greater Belfast and east of Portadown across to Bangor. “Many of the agri dealers that we already attract to Fintona also have a construction division and vice versa and many of these like BC Plant, Burkes, Essener Equipment, Plant Mec, Northern Lift Trucks, Wilsons of Rathkenny and DA Forgie are all back again at the Maze event. Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 18 50 YEARS IN UK FOR JOHN DEERE John Deere Limited celebrates its 50th anniversary in the UK and Ireland this year, starting with a special display at LAMMA last month. The company started trading from Langar in January 1966 and the original premises are still in use today as John Deere’s visitor centre and national parts distribution centre. N. Ireland distributor Johnston Gilpin was founded in 1968 to sell John Deere products and is still family owned and run today by managing director Randal McConnell. Although John Deere tractors had been available locally since 1966, it was not until 1968 that Johnston Gilpin & Co Ltd was established as an official dealership to distribute the range of John Deere Agricultural Machinery with C&CE and Domestic machinery following in 1986. The company was originally a partnership between well know local businessmen Johnston Gilpin, Cyril Johnston and Donn McConnell eventually building to a three depot operation covering the whole of the Province. In 1990, Donn McConnell oversaw the selling of the two depots in Omagh and Coleraine, still trading, to their respective managers and the main Johnston Gilpin Lisburn Depot was kept to service Co. Down, Co.Armagh and part of Co.Antrim for the Agricultural sector, the whole of Northern Ireland and Donegal for the Professional (C&CE) sector and Counties Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and part of Antrim for the Domestic sector. Donn‘s son Randal came into the company in 1992 joined three years later by his other son, Neale. A need to offer a wider domestic range of John Deere equipment from a front line, more visible position saw the establishment in 2002 of subsidiary company Ground Control, located on the main Lisburn to Saintfield Road. RECORD TRACTOR SALES The company has just reported another good year and managing director Randal McConnell is optimistic as to the future. “The last few years of trading have seen our turnover building year on year to a point where we are almost back to the best years we ever had in 2007 and 2008. Our new online John Deere Store is also developing steadily. “Tractors and equipment like forage harvesters are being sold at a higher unit price than 5-10 years ago but the sector is so competitive, profit margins are fairly static. “We have also built up a substantial business in the groundcare, municipal and horticultural sectors. The opening of Ground Control has enabled us to greatly expand our domestic sales of John Deere ride on and walk behind equipment as well as allow us to represent a significant number of other major domestic products.“ When asked about significant developments over those 50 years, Randal immediately opts to technology. “The tractor has undoubtedly seen more in terms of development and added technology that even the auto market with most of this taking place in the last five to six years. We have seen a concerted move towards precision farming being embraced more and more with GPS, Auto Track and the move towards remote diagnosis. “Auto steer has even taken hold with quite a few sales recorded with local contractors with much smaller agreages. With the current cost of fertiliser, labour and diesel, precision farming is becoming more attractive as a cost saver. “As for the next number of years I feel we will see a more two tier approach to farming with the more basic, entry level tractors and equipment still being popular on smaller family farms but with many of the larger customers increasingly embracing precision farming.“ LONG DEALER HISTORY One of the tractors sold by John Deere dealers 50 years ago and on which the company started to build its reputation, was the 4020 Diesel. This 91hp six-cylinder tractor was the first to appear on the UK market with a powershift transmission and became arguably the most popular tractor of its era. The rest of the John Deere Limited product line in 1966 included the 710, 5010 and 5020 tractors, ploughs, cultivators, disc harrows and the 530 and 630 combines. Langar’s own specially restored 4020, nicknamed BEV after its original registration plate, played a starring role in last November’s Lord Mayor’s Show in London, helping the Worshipful Company of Farmers and the NFU to promote the Back British Farming 18 equipjan/feb’16

In a nod to the 2016 anniversary, it was chosen to parade alongside its modern day descendant, the new flagship 620hp four- track 9620RX, to highlight one aspect of the tremendous advances that have been made in farming technology over the 50 years. The tractors also stood side by side once again in last month‘s LAMMA display to help promote a very special event that will take place at Langar in September 2016. John Deere customers and fans are being invited to get involved in the 50th anniversary celebrations by visiting a dedicated page on the company’s website, which will be going live later in February at www.JohnDeere.co.uk/50years. John Deere Company Limited was first incorporated on 22 August 1951, but plans to set up a UK manufacturing site near Glasgow in the 1950s were frustrated (although John Deere Limited’s registered office is still in Edinburgh). As a result, in 1956 the American parent company Deere & Co purchased the Heinrich Lanz business, which included factories in West Germany (Mannheim & Zweibrücken) and Spain (Getafe), and access to established dealer organisations in both these countries as well as France. The Mannheim tractor factory is still John Deere’s main European manufacturing base today. As the marketing company for the UK & Ireland, John Deere Limited was incorporated on 12 January 1966 and started trading that month from its present day headquarters at Langar, near Nottingham, in parallel with the (by then) John Deere owned company Lundell (Great Britain) Ltd of Edenbridge in Kent, which eventually went into liquidation in late 1968. The Langar premises were previously a medical supplies store owned by the Royal Canadian Air Force, which had used the adjacent airfield as an operational base from 1952 until 1963. For a short time in the early 1960s, a few dealers sold large John Deere tractors such as the 4010 – the UK’s first 100hp tractor – and 4020, which were imported from the USA through a franchise operation. Of those original dealers who continued with the new company from 1966, two are still John Deere dealers today, and are owned by the same families – Ben Burgess in Norfolk and L E Tuckwell in Suffolk. 7B, Lisnoe Road, Lisburn Co. Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 21 NEWSLINE KOBELCOS FOR ALEXANDER WITH a mixed excavator fleet that now runs to over 20 machines, mostly Komatsu PC210s with a mix of PC160LGPs and a Cat 336E, W&H Alexander Ltd have taken the step to bring two new Kobelco SK210-9s into their fleet. The new units will be working on the company‘s new Galawhistle Windfarm site just north of Cairnryan on Scotland‘s west coast where ten machines are helping to create the infrastructure for the 22 turbine site. Alexander (Plant) Ltd, founded in May 2013 to handle an ever growing plant and equipment fleet, is headed up by ex–McCormick Macnaughton engineer John McElwaine - pictured above with managing director Ian Alexander - who told Equip that although the fleet was still predominantly Komatsu, he is not averse to adding different makes should the need arise. “We have always had a mixed fleet albeit with one dominant brand. When we were looking for additional machines for the new site, the two new Kobelcos were simply available just at the right time and at the right price. Having also looked in detail at the backup of McSharry Brothers, we decided to go with Kobelco for the first time. “We decided on the Dash 9 machines rather than the most recently launched Dash 10, as they represent value for money and are extremely fuel efficient. “The drivers seem to like and appreciate the new models very much, the cabs are spacious and very comfortable and both are fitted with Geith automatic hitches to minimise the time used in changing from excavation to trenching buckets or attachments and back again. “So far the SK210s are running very well without a fault and we are very pleased with the total package offered by McSharrys.“ STRONG SECTOR REPUTATION Founded in 1972, today the Alexander company is a modern, thriving business which has expanded operations throughout Ireland, Scotland and England delivering projects across all sectors including utilities (water and electricity), public realm and environmental works, roads, construction and civil engineering (bridges, weirs etc). The company has developed a particularly strong reputation within the renewable energy sector and is acknowledged as a key industry player across Ireland and more recently in Scotland and England having completed some 34 windfarms with up to 15 turbines per site. The Galawhistle contract calls for the construction of 22 Vesta 3MW turbines with 45 metre blades to produce an overall capacity of 66MW. Construction started on site in early 2015 with the works to enable access roads, spur roads, turbine foundations, substations and cabling works. The site is expected to be operational by February of next year. Fintan McSharry, sales director of McSharry Bros told Equip: "We were delighted to be able to conclude this deal with Alexander Plant Ltd. and add these blue Kobelcos to their fleet. It is great to add such an experienced and respected company to our customer base. Both Ian Alexander and John McElwaine were very clear in what they were looking for in an excavator of this class. The SK210 ticked the boxes in terms of performance and fuel efficiency. "We have had a great first year with our Kobelco dealership. Sales have been very strong throughout the country. There is great respect and trust in the Kobelco brand. We have a quality product and we try to be as competitive as possible. “Sales in Northern Ireland have topped our expectations and the plan is to build on that in 2016. Hopefully the market will continue to improve as well." Info: McSharry Bros, Roscommon. Tel: + 353 90 6629500 www.mcsharrybros.com equipjan/feb’16 21
Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 22 NC EXCLUSIVE NEW DUMPER FACTORY FOR NC WHILE known predominantly for their extensive range of agricultural equipment from dump trailers to slurry tankers and pumps to road sweepers, NC Engineering based in hamiltownsbawn, Co. Armagh first launched their brand new site dumpers at Balmoral Show in 2007 after an initial launch at SED that year. The FH225 telehandler was launched at Balmoral Show two years ago. Now in their 40th anniversary year with a new factory extension just finished, housing a dedicated line for telehandlers and site dumpers, NC is about to embark on a major expansion that will potentially see 400 assorted sized dumpers roll off that line each year. Established in 1976 by Norman Nicholl and Wlfie Carson, the NC Engineering factory of 3, 5 and 6 tonnes up to nine and ten has been a backbone and major employer in the local community committed to tonners and a 1.5 tonne tracked carrier designing and then manufacturing quality products primarily for the agricultural and model. municipal sectors. Large number of stock axles ready for fitting “Most have other strong construction products in their portfolios and welcome the ability to offer a full site dumper range along with a branded mini excavator or loader.“ CUSTOMER LEAD SPECIFICATION NC Engineering currently employs 130 people in Hamiltownsbawn, the latest being Adrian Pearson who has been brought in to assist Rodney McCall and concentrate on export sales. When the new facility is finally finished and numbers of dumpers and telehandlers start to ramp up, that number may well rise. Service & warranty manager David McReynolds was justifiably proud of the new facility as he Above: Part of the NC dumper line showed Equip around the new production lines. Below: A new FH225S shown “This dedicated extension is a wonderful addition. Its gives us the ability to react very quickly to recently at the Balmoral Winter Fair orders that we receive and because of the stock levels we hold, we can build dumpers and telehandlers as quickly as anyone in the business. Before this we were building dumpers and telehandler orders in among the agricultural lines. “It takes us 8/12 weeks to restock so we never let any part get so low that we are going to end up short. Most times we are working a year in advance on planning stocking levels. “We use many industry standard components on both dumpers and handlers like Deutz and Kubota engines on certain weights, Rexroth, Newage and Dana Spicer. Our engineers can work on either dumpers or telehandlers. “We can produce a Tier 3a engined product for New Zealand – until the regulations force them to change – while also producing a unit with a dpf for Switzerland and we have a Tier IV Deutz powered model ready to go into production if required. “Above all we are extremely adaptable and can react to any individual customer specification very quickly. “We have a supplier in Clane, Co. Kildare who produces cabs to our own ROPS and FOPS design for larger dumpers. “We inspect and road test every single unit that comes off the line, not just a representative sample. That way we can stand over the NC branding.“ Wilfie Carson only sees good things ahead. “Our agri range of products is well established within the industry both at home and abroad and we manufacture many market leading products. “Our next task is to utilise this new facility fully by developing our home market for the Brendan McKenna of Keady Hire was one of construction products and start to sell dumpers and telehandlers to Irish contractors and Rodney McCall‘s first local customers for a rental companies in the numbers that we now sell abroad.“ new NC 6.0 tonne swivel at Balmoral Show 2007 Sole Kubota Construction + Agricultural Dealer for N.I. + Donegal Gardening + Horticultural Equipment D.A. The catalogue included a large inventory of agricultural equipment and general machinery coming from leading consignors that included Charles Wilson, A-Plant, One Call Hire and Zeppelin Rentals. A Volvo L180G wheeled loader made the top hammer price of £150,000 and various equipment lots went for bargain prices, including several at under £1,000. Featured lots included over 50 near new, low hours, 2013 and 2014 T6 and T7 tractors direct from the New Holland dealer network that were sold at the auction, achieving prices between £61,000 and £31,000, representing an average saving of between 20% to 25% on their new list prices. The farming equipment category comprised a total of almost 750 individual lots and accounted for over £4 million of the overall sale. A new element for this auction was a large consignment of ex-hire power tools (over 1,000 lots), which necessitated a third auction ring being operated. Jan-Feb 16 FINAL Revised :Layout 1 15/2/16 21:05 Page 25 AUCTIONNEWS JOHNSTON LAUNCH NEW C401 Johnston Sweepers has introduced its cleanest, most manoeuvrable, highest payload and best-ever suction performance midsized sweeper yet – the all-new C401. Powered by the latest super-clean FPT (Iveco) Euro 6 engine, it features Johnston’s unique new 4 wheel steer system which delivers astonishing manoeuvrability, unrivalled in its class. The C401 also delivers 15% greater suction performance than its predecessor, the C400, thanks to an ingenious new patent-pending fan design - and now, with a 10.5 tonne GVW and larger water tanks, the C401 can stay out on the job for longer than ever before for greatest operational efficiency. Johnston’s clever new fan outlet system has been developed using specialist Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, which analyses air flow to find the smoothest air path through the fan. The result is 15% more suction from exactly the same power input – or, to put it another way, better sweeping performance than ever before with no extra fuel costs. The new sweeper also features Johnston’s clever water recirculation system option to re-use and conserve water, while larger capacity tanks carry 825L of water on board – 225L more than the C400 - to deliver longer on-station time. Another first for Johnston’s sweeper range is the brand new Easy Clean system option which, when connected to a hydrant, allows the hopper to clean itself after sweeping using special water spray bars fitted behind the meshes, flushing out dirt and debris from difficult to reach areas. No more hosepipes required! SPACIOUS NEW CAB The spacious, airy, walk-through cab is large enough to allow a third seat to be fitted for a Driver + 2 team configuration and features a vast glass area, 16% greater than the C400, for easy view of the nozzle and brush gear during operations. The new cabin is quieter too – by up to 3.5dB(A) over the C400 – for even greater operator comfort. Inside the cab the controls include a new Advanced Torque Management System, an innovative control system ensuring the most efficient use of engine power during sweeping. The system automatically uses the minimum fuel and engine speed required to deliver the desired fan and brush speed, as set by the operator, for lowest possible running costs and emissions. The controls also include Johnston’s popular Data Capture system which allows all operational and fuel consumption data to be downloaded onto a USB stick for easy monitoring and management. To accommodate the new 118kW Euro 6 from FPT, Johnston’s design team has introduced a brand new lightweight chassis, low vibration axles and high performance suspension system, and has cleverly incorporated the “One Box” After Treatment System without impacting on the chassis. The new engine has the added benefit of 500 hour service intervals. Johnston’s 4 wheel steer system is fitted as standard on the new C401, giving the machine outstanding manoeuvrability. The outgoing C400 was renowned for being able to turn on a sixpence with a kerb to kerb turning circle of 3850mm, but the C401 takes manoeuvrability to a whole new level with a turning radius of just 2950mm. Wall to wall is also significantly reduced to a mere 3550mm from 4375mm on the previous model, making the new machine one of the most nifty on the market. What’s more, new hydraulics throughout have reduced hose routings and connections by 40% over the C400, while the introduction of steel pipes is designed to increase reliability and durability for lowest running costs and longest on-station work time. 5000km of testing at Millbrook As with all new products introduced by Johnston, the new C401 has been subjected to rigorous durability and reliability testing at Millbrook Proving Ground, Europe’s leading vehicle test and development facility. The sweeper underwent 5,000km of tests including twist humps, pave, kerb strikes and pot holes, as well as comprehensive corrosion tests equivalent to three years’ in an extreme corrosive environment. The C401 passed each test with flying colours. Dozens of clever design enhancements and clean Euro 6 engine, together with all-new chassis, axle and suspension system, combine on the C401 to deliver a versatile all-round midsized machine - small and manoeuvrable enough to sweep in the tightest of areas, but with a high 10.5 tonne payload for longest on-station performance. equipjan/feb’16 25
