III. Compréhension orale ‘American football’. AMERICAN FOOTBALL The American type of football was developed in the 19th century from soccer and rugby football. Played by professionals, amateurs, college, high school or young children, football in America is one of the most popular sports. It attracts millions of fans each fall and people are very supportive of their favourite teams. The football playing field is rectangular in shape and measures 100 yards long and 53.5 yards wide. White lines are painted on the playing field to mark off the distances to the end zone. The game is divided into four quarters, each fifteen minutes long. The first two quarters are known as the first half. There is a rest period between the two halves which usually lasts about fifteen minutes. Each team has eleven players. Each team has offensive players and defensive players. Players are required to wear protective equipment to help keep the body safe during the game. Helmets are worn to protect the head and face area. Pads are worn to protect the shoulders, arms, and legs. Protective equipment must be worn because of the body contact players have during the game. Séance 4 I. Correction de l’évaluation intermédiaire N°1. II. Associez chaque paragraphe aux photos qui correspondent puis expliquez pourquoi en une phrase en anglais (photos video-projettées) Cheerleaders Cheerleaders are the beauty of what can be a violent, brutal sport. With their shiny pom- poms, sexy costumes and athletic dance routines, these women are the only reason why many people watch football in the first place. And the Super Bowl, broadcast simultaneously in 232 countries around the world, is their biggest stage. Commercials The Super Bowl is the most important event of TV advertising. Advertisers pay millions to get their ads broadcast during the game (this year’s rate was $2.8 million for 30 seconds of air time). And they spend millions more producing ads that are creative and innovative enough to generate a buzz. Indeed, for many people, the commercials are the Super Bowl. Finger food Super Bowl Sunday is the second-highest day of food consumption in the USA after Thanksgiving. The feast usually begins with the pre-game show at noon, six hours before kick-off. During the day, Americans will eat one billion chicken wings, 15,000 tons of popcorn and 8 million pounds of guacamole. Not to mention all the pizzas, soda and beer that is consumed. It’s no surprise that 6 % of working Americans call in sick the day after the game. Live music stars The Super Bowl half-time show has come a long way since marching bands played at the first game in 1967. Today it is a showcase for music legends: the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2, Justin Timberlake, Prince and Michael Jackson are just some of the names that have performed. Bruno Mars will be the 2014 Super Bowl Guest. Mascot Every team has its own mascot. Someone is dressed up as an animal: it can be a bear, a dog, a lion, an imaginary creature, a cartoon character… The mascot is used to cheer up spectators, kids and grown-ups. Fans love buying the mascot toy of their favorite team and bringing it back home.

Séance 5 I. Compréhension de document (préparation à l’examen) Diary of a Mascot My name is Pierre Deschenes and I was born in Shawinigan-sud, Québec, on November 9, 1949. In 1985 while I was a referee during a hockey tournament, the mascot was injured – the tournament had to go on and they needed a new mascot. They asked me if I was interested and, without realizing that I’d do that in front of 40,000 people, I accepted. The result was very impressive, and I was actually better than the previous mascot. Since then, I’ve been in the fascinating world of mascots. I have worked for major companies such as Coke, les Caisses Populaires, Pepsi, Bell Canada, etc. For the past four years, I’ve been in the USA as the mascot Jumping Jack where I perform for approximately 200 hockey and baseball games per year. This profession gave me the opportunity to travel in many countries throughout the world and meet many people including celebrities (Céline Dion, Garth Brooks), political figures (Bill Clinton, Stephen Harper) and athletes. The most important part is that for the past 15 years, I’ve been in love with my job. I’m totally dedicated to it. There’s nothing nicer than to be able to get smiles from kids and make people happy around you. http://hockeyzoneplus.com Répondez aux questions en français : a. Quel est le thème du document ? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… b. A quelle occasion Pierre Deschenes a-t-il débuté sa carrière de mascotte ? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. c. Qu’a – t-il pensé de sa première prestation en tant que mascotte ? ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. d. Quels sont les avantages de son métier ? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… e. Expliquez son dévouement pour son métier. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
