Candidate Brief Environment Canterbury - Director of Finance and Corporate Services
About the company

Environment Canterbury is a dynamic place to work. Spanning one of New Zealand’s largest regions –
Canterbury – Environment Canterbury is facing more change than it has since its inception with
implementation of wide-reaching water reforms and a comprehensive review of the Resource Management
Act. It is also developing a new cadence of governance through a now fully elected Council. As a region that
has faced more upheaval (in the form of earthquakes, the recovery and rebuild and the impacts of attacks on
groups of residents) than the rest of New Zealand as a whole; Environment Canterbury needs positive,
collaborative and transformative leadership to ensure it has the people, culture, capability and the capacity to
continue to deliver on its objectives in this ever-evolving environment, while staying true to its core values:
People First, Collaboration, Stewardship, Integrity, Can Do.

A key role within the Environment Canterbury leadership team is the Director of Finance and Corporate
Services (the Director) and we are looking for a collaborative and courageous leader to take on this vital role.
Are you ready for your next challenge?

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Chief Executive and leading a talented team of senior leaders, the Director takes overall
accountability for translating governance expectations and objectives into corporate operational performance
while leading a culture that aligns with organisational values and supports these performance expectations.
In taking on this overall accountability and by leading achievement through others, the Director will:

      Nurture and lead a team of highly skilled leaders, ensuring they have clarity around what is expected
          and are empowered to act;
      Within the evolving context, lead an environment that fosters and adopts innovative thinking that will
          create new ways of providing services to and communicating with customers, both internal and
          external;
      Lead proactive and customer focused support, information and insights to and for each group within
          Environment Canterbury; enabling and empowering others to make decisions, act and achieve;
      Contribute as a key member of the leadership team; enhancing collaboration and idea sharing,
          developing effective strategies and supporting each other to deliver to expectations.

It goes without saying that the Director will be accountable for the performance of the Group to the Chief
Executive and Council and must “be across” the performance, challenges, risks and opportunities of each
function and how these support and benefit the wider objectives of Environment Canterbury.

This role needs an inspiring, innovative leader who can foster a culture aligned to the organisation’s values,
while driving operational excellence throughout the Finance and Corporate Services Functions. Is this you?
