Public Health improves community health through education. Oakland County Health
Division (OCHD) employs a diverse staff knowledgeable about a variety of health topics.

The Oakland County Health Division’s Public Health Speakers Team:

• Provides health education presentations and resources that are current, reliable, and
  relevant to our community.

• Is available at no charge to schools, churches, civic groups, social clubs, businesses, and
  other non-profit organizations.

• Is available during regular business hours; evening and weekend availability is limited
  and based on availability of the speaker.

Please note, all requests are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis, and not all requests
can be accommodated due to general obligations and availability. We will do our best to
accommodate your request. Requests must be submitted a minimum of 15 business days
prior to the event. However, submitting a request four weeks or more in advance will
improve our ability to accommodate your needs. You will receive an e-mail accepting or
declining your request within 5-7 business days.

General Overview     Overview of Oakland County Health Division’s 50+ programs and services.
                     Audience: Adults, community groups, agencies, and organizations whose clients
                     can utilize Public Health services

Disease Prevention Services
Communicable        Learn how communicable diseases spread and how to avoid giving or receiving

                    Audience: Young adults through senior citizens
                    Length: 30 – 45 minutes
Germ Busters /      Discover why proper hand washing techniques are important, and learn helpful
Handwashing         techniques to prevent the spread of disease-causing germs. This presentation is
                    appropriate for preschoolers through senior citizens. Can be combined with the
                    Communicable Disease presentation for adult audiences.
                    Audience: All ages
                    Length: 30 – 45 minutes
Hepatitis A, B, & C This presentation covers the basic anatomy of the liver, testing, diagnosing,
                    treatment, infection, and resources for Hepatitis A, B, and C.
                    Audience: Adults, adolescents (due to the sensitive nature of the topic,
                    presentation is not acceptable for children)
                    Length: 60 minutes
HIV/AIDS            Subjects covered can vary from a very basic HIV 101 covering transmission,
                    testing, prevention, myths, treatment, and resources. Also available for certain
                    target populations are a history of HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, effects on aging
                    population, effects on the body, triple diagnosis (HIV/AIDS, substance abuse,
                    mental illness), and stigma.
                    Audience: Adults, adolescents (due to the sensitive nature of the topic,
                    presentation is not acceptable for children)
                    Length: 60 minutes
Immunizations       Immunizations and the diseases they protect you from are discussed.
(Adult, Adolescent, Immunization requirements per the CDC guidelines as well as immunization
Child)              requirements for schools are also covered.
                    Audience: All ages
                    Length: 30 – 45 minutes
Influenza (Flu)     What is the flu and why do you need to get a flu shot every year?
                    Audience: All ages

Lyme Disease /      A presentation on Lyme disease in Michigan, which includes distribution in

Pertussis        A presentation on pertussis (whooping cough), which includes disease
                 characteristics, transmission, groups at high risk for serious illness, testing,
                 treatment, and prevention.

Rabies           A presentation on rabies, which includes history, disease characteristics,
                 transmission, testing, treatment, and prevention.
                 Audience: Adults, animal control agencies, critter control agencies, professionals
                 Length: 30 minutes
Sexually         Cover all STIs including gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes, syphilis,
Transmitted      HPV, hepatitis, and HIV. Focus on symptoms, treatment, prevention, and
Infections       resources.
                 Audience: Adults, adolescents (due to the sensitive nature of the topic,
                 presentation is not acceptable for children)
                 Length: 60 minutes
Tuberculosis     Learn about the history of TB as well as modern day efforts to prevent, detect,
                 and treat active TB disease. For professional audiences, data from local, state,
                 national, and global level will also be presented.
                 Audience: Adults, professionals
                 Length: 30 minutes
Mosquito-Borne   Learn how to protect yourself from West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne
Diseases         diseases. PowerPoint presentation for ages 16+ and a modified version that
                 includes a story and activity is available for younger audiences.

Beaches, Lakes, &   How do I know if it is safe to swim at area beaches? Explanation of Oakland

Drinking Water &    Learn about the different components of a well and the role of the Health

                   and treatment.

Infant Safe Sleep    Is your baby’s crib safe? Learn the seven steps to creating a safe sleep
                     environment. A train-the-trainer program is available to assist community
                     partners with client education.
                     Audience: Parents, agencies or organizations that provide client education
                     Length: 45 – 60 minutes
Older Adult          “Staying Safe At Home” addresses common safety issues that adults may face as

Positive Parenting   Raising children is one of the toughest and most fulfilling jobs in the world – and
                     the one for which most parents feel least prepared. During this presentation,
                     a public health nurse will discuss nine effective parenting strategies such as
                     effective discipline, communication, and nurturing for the parent and child. The
                     presentation is interactive, and referrals to parenting classes can be provided as
                     requested.
                     Audience: Pregnant women, parenting teens and families with children birth to
                     18 years of age
                     Length: 45 - 60 minutes

Healthy Lifestyles Learn how healthy eating and physical activity can prevent diseases like heart
To Prevent Heart   disease and diabetes, as well as improve your overall well-being. For adults, a
Disease & Diabetes PowerPoint presentation is used. For teens, a Jeopardy game is available. For
                   younger children, a story is used.
                   Audience: All ages (activities adapted to be age appropriate)
                   Length: 45 – 60 minutes
Oral Health        Keep your teeth healthy. A look at teeth and gum disease and how to prevent
                   them.
                   Audience: All ages
                   Length: 30 – 45 minutes
Stress             Did you know that 75-90% of all doctor visits are prompted by stress-related
                   concerns? Learn how to reduce or managed your stress to stay productive and
                   happy. An interactive PowerPoint presentation is used for teens and adults. A
                   story about feelings is used for younger children.
                   Audience: All ages
                   Length: 30 – 45 minutes
Suicide Prevention Objectives for this presentation include reviewing facts about mental health and
                   suicide, learning warning signs of suicide, and sharing basic techniques to have
                   conversations about suicide. Participants will also receive a list of Oakland County
                   mental health resources.
                   Audience: Highschool & Older
                   Length: 60 minutes
Vaping             Do you know if your child is vaping? Discover how e-cigarettes operate, how to
                   identify them, why youth are using them, and how to talk to about the topic.
                   Learn about health and safety concerns of e-cigarettes - the most commonly used
                   tobacco product among U.S. youth.
                   Audience: Adults, professionals, community organizations (schools, organizations
                   that work with youth)
                   Length: 60-90 minutes
