Art and Architecture for the Curious Mind Cost per week: Early bird £169, Full price £188 Art and Architecture for the Curious Mind is a critical thinking course to broaden your world view, and the following sessions are planned: ● Behind the facade: A holistic guide to the city of Cambridge. An afternoon of walking and talking; Cambridge will be the springboard for discussions ranging between theology, philosophy, history,politics and more. There will be a special visit to King's College Chapel ● Cambridge Museum of Antiquities: An afternoon of sketching and critiquing the sculpture of the mighty ancients; where it all began ● Fitzwilliam Museum: Developing a critical eye and a masterclass on presenting an artwork to an audience ● Contemporary art at Kettle's Yard Gallery/ The Heong Gallery: 'Experiencing' the art of today and a Great Debate ● Grand Finale: Creative responses to art: a session to develop our own works inspired by the week's discoveries. Children will have the opportunity to create a work of art and/or piece of writing and to present this work to the group. Francesca Dytor: Francesca graduated from University of Cambridge in 2016 where she specialised in the Quattrocento and the birth of Western modernism. She continued at Cambridge for her MPhil, where she worked on depictions of fictive marble in Renaissance Tuscany. She is now based in Berlin, and teaches for Art History Abroad, taking gap year students on wonderful art historical adventures around Italy. When at home she is busy pursuing new research ideas and working as a research assistant. Basketball Cost per week: Early bird £152, Full price £169 The fundamentals coached at the camp are those sanctioned by British Basketball who has developed the key areas of emphasis for entry level and elite basketball in the UK. Students will learn basketball fundamentals covering ball handling, passing, shooting, individual attacking, individual defending, team defence and team offence. They will also have opportunity to develop transferable skills such as learning the value of teamwork, handling pressure and a competitive work ethic in a focused and disciplined environment. A basketball fundamentals course is a great way of learning to play basketball and the course is open to both those with little or no experience of the game but also those with some experience who are looking to enhance their skills. Clinton Wedderburn: Coach Wedderburn is employed as a basketball and athletics coach at The Perse Upper School. He is a Level 3 Basketball England qualified coach who has played both in local and national league fixtures for Ipswich and Colchester basketball clubs. While serving with Colchester basketball he represented England against Harvard University. Coach Wedderburn is the Head Junior Coach of Cambridge Cats Basketball where he has spent 19 years working with and developing junior players and teams 13 – 18 years old to play in the Basketball England National League. He is also a junior Cambridgeshire county coach who has been the guiding figure in the development of many individual players that have made the transition from club to university basketball in UK and USA colleges. 2
Building Confidence in Performance and Public Speaking Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 Are you anxious about acting and petrified of public speaking? This group workshop aims to help develop your confidence in presenting yourself to an audience. In a welcoming and unthreatening atmosphere, we will use a range of games and exercises to build your confidence, and you will receive personalised tips to improve your oral communication. Building towards either a presentation or a performance, you will develop the confidence to stand before an audience and express yourself with an awareness of both your voice and your body. Carl Cerny: Carl is an experienced teacher of English and drama, and is Head of Year 11 at The Perse Upper School. Carl's degrees are from the University of Warwick and University College, London where he studied English and Comparative Literature. As well as having taught both English and drama, he has directed a series of successful school productions including ‘Macbeth’, Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, and an immersive, devised adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ stories. He has wide-ranging experience as a stage actor and has trained with the English Speaking Union. Bushcraft Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 Interested in fire lighting, wood carving and cooking over an open fire? The bushcraft course is an exciting opportunity to try your hand at a wide range of back to basics skills ranging from lighting a fire with sparks to carving your very own spoon. If you don’t mind a little bit of mud and enjoy a marshmallow or two this course may well be for you. No prior experience needed and all necessary equipment will be provided. James Hutchings: As well as teaching physics and technology at The Perse, James Hutchings works with the Outdoor Pursuits Department as a canoe, kayak and climbing coach, has completed a wide range of expeditions in the UK and abroad, and is also very passionate about living in the outdoors and bushcraft skills. These bushcraft skills are used on a regular basis to teach young people about survival, carving, fire lighting, outdoor cooking and shelter building amongst other things and are a real passion of his. Tom Slader: As a qualified mountain leader, canoe coach and climbing instructor Tom has been running a variety of outdoor programs and activities for children for the past 8 years. As Assistant Head of Outdoor Pursuits at The Perse he has experience from the trekking in the Andes and Himalaya to leading bushcraft camps in the Peak District. 3
Ceramics - Coiling Cost per day: Early bird £72, Full price £80 Coiling is a hand building method of creating pottery. It has been used to shape clay into vessels for many thousands of years across the globe, from Africa to Greece and China to Mexico. We will use classical Greek vessel forms and pattern to inspire our ideas and create a vessel by the end of this one day course. In the morning session you will learn how to prepare clay, kneading and wedging, then prepare coils and start to build your vessel. In the afternoon session you will complete your vessel and decorate using coloured underglaze slips and sgraffito decoration. The finished clay work will be fired and available for collection at a later date. Students who have attended this course previously will have an opportunity to extend their skills and outcomes will be adapted to extend learning. Ceramics - Slab building Cost per day: Early bird £72, Full price £80 Hand building pottery using slabs of clay is an exciting way to create shapes that would be difficult to achieve with coiling. Slab building techniques were used extensively by Pre- Columbian potters with some beautiful results. We will use Pre Columbian pattern and decoration to inspire our ideas and create a vessel by the end of this one day course. In the morning session you will learn how to prepare clay, kneading and wedging, then creating clay slabs and making plaster stamps based on Pre-Columbian motifs. During the afternoon session you will construct geometric vessel forms learning how to build with slabs and decorate using the plaster stamps to create bas relief. The clay work will be glazed and fired and available for collection at a later date. Students who have attended this course previously will have an opportunity to extend their skills and outcomes will be adapted to extend learning Mandy Wilkins: Mandy has a degree in 3D design: Ceramics, which involved a breadth of techniques from hand building, throwing, slip casting and glaze chemistry. Mandy is an experienced teacher of art and an A level moderator. 4
Chess Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 Are you confused by Castling? Or empowered by your knowledge of En Passant? Whether you are a budding chess player, or an experienced one, this is the course for you! We will look at how to improve the beginning of your game by looking at the openings available, and also learn how to achieve Checkmate by looking at some puzzles. Chess has been around for thousands of years, isn’t it time you improved your game? James Rhatigan: James is an experienced maths teacher, and is currently Head of Year 9 at The Perse Upper. He holds degrees in Mathematics and Philosophy from Durham and London, and qualified from KCL as a teacher. Much of the research that James did for his academic career was in the applications of mathematics to morality and ethics, and he is very interested in the wider applications of the subject. James also maintains a keen interest in Chess, having both competed himself and developed other's enjoyment and ability in the game for many years. 5
Codebreaking Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 Codebreaking and cryptography is at the heart of spy-work, and is an incredibly subtle and interesting area of mathematics. In this course we will look at making and breaking codes using everything from caesar shifts to frequency analysis, enigma codes to pictograms codes. We will use a variety of tools to help us including Turing’s Bombe, good old Excel, and of course plenty of brain power and imagination! Command the Past Cost per week: Early bird £165, Full price £183 The popular virtual history course returns again to pit the wits of budding military-history enthusiasts against the greatest commanders and strategists of all time. From honing their battle tactics to learning about war and statecraft, students will use some of the latest video- game engines to see if they have what it takes to beat down their rivals, work with their allies and forge new empires. Will they, like Caesar, be able to claim that they came, saw and conquered? David Bennett: David has a degree in Classics from the University of Durham and teaches Ancient History, Greek and Latin at The Perse. He has studied and taught topics from throughout the ancient world, from the Fall of Troy, to Alexander the Great, to the Emperors of Rome. Redvers Wilbur: Redvers teaches both History and Ancient History at The Perse Upper. He has a double-major in History and Classics from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and a passion for exploring the past through fiction, films and even video games. 6
Comme Ci Comme Ça Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 In this course we will be using French in everyday conversation. With a focus on learning how to communicate in French, we will encounter different scenarios such as going to the market, shopping for food or playing sports. We will learn about French culture and play typical French games. Over the course we will aim to help you feel more confident in conversing in French to native speakers and learn new and interesting vocabulary. Suitable for those with a basic knowledge of French who are keen to learn more. Jules Reston: Jules has a degree in History of Art from the University of Manchester and has completed his teacher training at Homerton College, Cambridge, going on to complete a Masters of Education. Previously, he has lived and worked in France, spending two years of his schooling life in Toulouse and then briefly working in the British Embassy in Paris before his time at university. With grandparents who had emigrated to France before he was born, Jules spent the majority of his summer holidays in France from a young age and has developed an appreciation and interest in French culture. 7
Conlang – Create Your Own Language Cost per week: Early bird £169, Full price £188 Would you like to make your own language or code? Have you ever wondered how fantasy and sci-fi authors have made languages for Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, or Game of Thrones? In this course, students will be guided step-by-step through the process of creating their own language. We will look at how languages work, what you need to know to develop fluency, and how to create the parts and pieces of a completely new language. Throughout the course we will draw inspiration from real languages spoken all over the world. Aaron Ralby: Dr. Aaron Ralby is a linguist and scholar passionate about languages and memory training. Aaron founded a company called Linguisticator in January 2011 and since then has built the company from a one-man operation to a global business with clients ranging from diplomats to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence. Aaron is a Germanic philologist by training and holds a PhD in Medieval Studies from Cornell University, an MA from Cornell, an MPhil from Cambridge in Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, and a BA from the University of Maryland. After completing his doctorate, Aaron went to Iceland, where he worked on a tree farm to improve his Icelandic. While there—and later in Germany studying Low German on a cattle farm—Aaron realized the need for a thoroughly systematic approach to learning new languages. He began to formally construct a method for himself, which he subsequently developed into Linguisticator. Aaron is currently working to expand the company’s offering of courses in both language and memory training. He is also involved in a number of projects related to language and memory training for children with special educational needs, such as dyslexia and autism. 8
Creative Crafts Cost per week: Early bird £165, Full price £183 Does silk painting a scarf, or printing your design onto canvas appeal to you? This course will explore how our own designs can be translated onto an object; sewing your printed canvas into a tote bag, tea towel or cushion cover. This course will provide the materials to do any number of designs for your desired item, exploring batik techniques, lino printing and stencil techniques onto canvas. Georgina Howling: Georgina is a designer and teacher. Working at The Perse teaching art as well as delivering projects to different primary schools throughout Cambridgeshire. She combines her teaching with jewellery designing and has an MA from the Royal College of Art in Jewellery and Metalwork. She enjoys exploring many different materials within her work and helping others explore their creativity. Design it, Make it, Use it Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 Would you like to make a product from beginning to end? Would you like to learn how to design, manufacture, advertise and develop creative flair? The group will be split into two halves working with specialist teachers for two sessions each to do projects like a headphones wrap and wearable technology. The final day will be a choice of activities. Learn how to use design software and manufacturing equipment to see your designs made into reality on the laser cutter and vacuum former. This course is perfect for students wanting an understanding of design and manufacturing processes, as well as a chance to get creative and get your hands dirty! Rosamund West: Rosamund is a Year 3 teacher at The Perse Prep School. After graduating from the University of Southampton with an honours degree in English and French, she worked in the publishing industry before completing her PGCE at the University of Cambridge. At The Prep, she is actively involved in the drama, English, maths and dt departments. She believes both in the enjoyment of creativity and making things, and that developing a wide range of practical skills is useful for later life. Anna Wingfield: Anna obtained a degree in Industrial Design at Brunel University before working at a number of creative companies working with a range of media including glass, textiles and recycled materials. She currently teaches design and technology at The Perse and makes her own products in the holidays. 9
Fantastic Forensics Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 Are you interested in science? Would you like to learn more about forensics? From DNA and fingerprints to flame tests, fibres and hairs, chromatography, castings, electrophoresis and many other practical techniques, we will explore and practise methods used by detectives and the police to help solve crimes. Perfect for those who enjoy science or simply those looking for an exciting and mysterious element to their summer - it would be a crime to miss it! Abigail Parker: Abigail obtained a degree in pre-clinical medical studies from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and studied medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital before beginning teaching at The Perse in September 2014. In 2017, Abigail took up a teaching post at St Faith's School in Cambridge. Film Academy Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 Someone once said ‘a picture tells a thousand words’. On this course you get the opportunity to find out exactly how film makers do this by exploring how films are made. You will explore how colour, light, sound and camera angles are used to create stories that capture our imaginations and take us on amazing journeys. By the end of the course, you will also get to make your own short film and present it in our mini film festival. Jo Coleman: Jo graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2002 with honours degree in Sociology and Politics and went on to do a PGCE at the University of Cambridge in 2005. She has taught in mainstream primary schools for several years, before moving to The Perse Prep in 2015 to become Head of Maths. 10
Fun Physiology Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 Are you interested in the human body? Or perhaps you would like to work in the medical field one day? Then this course is for you! Come and learn more about systems of the human body and how medics can use this knowledge to help us. Each day we will explore a different organ system, including the circulatory, nervous, digestive, respiratory and excretory systems through short lessons and practical work, we will also apply our new knowledge to simple medical case studies. Abigail Parker: Abigail obtained a degree in pre-clinical medical studies from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and studied medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital before beginning teaching at The Perse in September 2014. In 2017, Abigail took up a teaching post at St Faith's School in Cambridge. Sarah Latty: Sarah is currently a teacher of Chemistry at The Perse. She read Chemistry at Brasenose College, Oxford and has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge specialising in biophysical chemistry. He has played national level hockey in both New Zealand and the UK, and currently plays for Cambridge City Hockey Club. Carl Cerny: Carl is an experienced teacher of English and drama, and is Head of Year 11 at The Perse Upper. Carl's degrees are from The University of Warwick and University College, London where he studied English and Comparative Literature. As well as having taught both English and drama, he has directed a series of successful school productions including ‘Macbeth’, Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Real Inspector Hound’, and an immersive, devised adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’ stories. He has wide-ranging experience as a stage actor and has trained with the English Speaking Union. Georgina Howling: Georgina is a designer and teacher working at The Perse teaching art as well as delivering projects to different primary schools throughout Cambridgeshire. Journalism and the Media Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 What are the skills needed to become a successful journalist? Writing, interviewing and understanding your audience all play an important role. On this course you will learn about print and broadcast journalism, have a go at short-hand and learn the basics of broadcast interviewing, with the aim of producing your own radio feature or article for print. We also hope to visit a local media outlet (TBC) and welcome some professional guest speakers from the media (print and broadcast). Claire Ziwa: Claire has over 20 years’ experience working in the media. After graduating, Claire worked as a broadcast journalist in television before working in BBC local radio and then joining BBC Media Action, as a senior producer and journalism and media trainer. Claire has trained hundreds of journalists across Africa in countries including Sierra Leone, Angola and South Sudan. Claire was Head of Media for one of the UK’s largest police forces. Master Chef: Baking Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 With the numerous cooking and baking shows including Master Chef and the infamous Great British Bake Off encouraging young chefs to try their hand at various complex recipes, this course aims to give young people a chance to develop some everyday skills of their own to avoid those "throw your failed showstopper into the bin" moments. For those who have taken part in previous years, we will be trying all new recipes! Each session will present a new and different recipe which will be worked through step by step with the tutor. The complexity of each recipe will vary every day so a range of recipes with differing preparation and cooking times are encountered. By exploiting principles of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and probability in the magic, we aim to showcase the power of maths. Dan Whelan: Dan has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge and has taught at The Perse since 2010. James Rhatigan: James is an experienced maths teacher, and is currently Head of Year 9 at The Perse Upper. What if you could learn a new language with the same ease you learn your way around a new building or park? In this course, you can. We will build a memory palace to learn French. Rather than drilling grammar tables by rote, you’ll be exploring 3D virtual spaces and creating your own playful mnemonics and stories. Master the subjunctive, plurals, and irregular verbs quickly by unlocking the potential of your spatial mind. Aaron Ralby: Dr. Aaron Ralby is a linguist and scholar passionate about languages and memory training. Aaron founded a company called Linguisticator in January 2011 and since then has built the company from a one-man operation to a global business with clients ranging from diplomats to the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence. Aaron is a Germanic philologist by training and holds a PhD in Medieval Studies from Cornell University, an MA from Cornell, an MPhil from Cambridge in Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic, and a BA from the University of Maryland. After completing his doctorate, Aaron went to Iceland, where he worked on a tree farm to improve his Icelandic. While there—and later in Germany studying Low German on a cattle farm—Aaron realized the need for a thoroughly systematic approach to learning new languages. He began to formally construct a method for himself, which he subsequently developed into Linguisticator. Aaron is currently working to expand the company’s offering of courses in both language and memory training. He is also involved in a number of projects related to language and memory training for children with special educational needs, such as dyslexia and autism. 18

These might include tennis, hockey, cricket, touch rugby, netball, rounders, badminton, basketball, table-tennis, and more! This course is bookable by either the half day or by the day. Music Technology Cost per week: Early bird £152, Full price £169 During this 1 week course you will learn the essential elements of using Logic Pro to produce and create music and sound design projects. This course covers all the basic elements of Logic from project set up to plug in’s and how to use them. You will learn how to approach production projects from two essential elements - music and sound design. The first project will cover the creation of sound effects and the manipulation of audio to create a finished movie project. The second project will cover the musical elements of creating a musical piece for a TV advert. This project will include a brief introduction to the construction of chords and how to use them but will focus more on the use of the tools within Logic to create a polished musical piece. This course is intended for learners with no or very limited knowledge of Logic Pro and music production. Neil Cowlan: Neil is a guitarist, songwriter and producer. As a songwriter and producer and engineer Neil has worked with artists such as Thin Lizzy, King Crimson, Gavin Harrison, Carl Verheyen, Don Grusin (3 time Grammy winner), GraceSarah, Revelator, Damian Cox, Keith Wilkinson (Squeeze & Jools Holland), Jamie Morrison (Noisettes, Duffy, Stereophonics), Violet Transmissions, Emily Fraser, Polly Paulusma, John Parker (Nizlopi), Yamaha Musical Instruments, Ethan Ash, Gil Karpas, Rebecca Heyne, No Man (Stephen Wilson) and many more. In 2005 Neil was invited by BBC radio to co-present a monthly radio show looking at guitar playing through the different styles of blues and was described by the BBC as a “guitar superhero” and “the best guitarist to emerge from Cambridge”. Will Bidwell: Will is a form teacher at The Perse Prep and been actively involved in the Games department for over 2 years. We will use a number of different paints, such as watercolour, acrylic and dissolvable crayons to allow the chance to explore the paint application process through the use of brushes, sponges, self- made utensils, and even getting our hands dirty using our fingers! A series of masterclasses will demonstrate techniques, following which you will be given time to develop the new skills in practice; painting landscapes, objects, architecture and abstract shapes. Chloe Fagan: Chloe teaches English at The Perse and runs the F.R.Leavis literary society for sixth formers. She studied English Literature at Durham University and completed her Masters degree in Victorian Literature, Art and Culture through the University of London, during which she used her spare time to write. Performing Arts - Spotlight on Stage Cost per week: Early bird £195, Full price £217 Calling all drama and singing enthusiasts! Would you like to take to the stage in our brand new state-of-the art Peter Hall Performing Arts Centre? Over the course of three days students will create a brand new staged piece from scratch working with awarding-winning practitioners from the world of professional music and drama. The story, lyrics, music and songs will all be devised with the students and family and friends are invited to the final performance. No previous experience or audition required, just a willingness to get involved! Tim Yealland: Tim has led the award winning education department at English Touring Opera for the last 15 years. Tim is a director and writer and as a baritone he sang for most of the major opera companies. With Rachel Leach he has devised 5 major community operas, including most recently Under the Hammerbeam Roof, commissioned by Hampton Court to celebrate its 500th birthday. Together Tim and Rachel won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Education Project. Rachel Leach: Rachel has worked within the education departments of most of the UK’s orchestras and opera companies. The majority of her work is for the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Rachel has written well over twenty pieces for LSO Discovery and fifteen community operas. She is the presenter of the LSO St Luke’s lunchtime concert series and regularly presents children’s concerts and pre-concert events for LSO, LPO, BBC Proms, the Royal College of Music and Wigmore Hall. 23

Rosamund West: Rosamund is a Year 3 teacher at The Perse Prep School. After graduating from the University of Southampton with an honours degree in English and French, she worked in the publishing industry before completing her PGCE at the University of Cambridge. At the Prep, she is actively involved in the drama, English, maths and dt departments. She believes both in the enjoyment of creativity and making things, and that developing a wide range of practical skills is useful for later life. Anna Wingfield: Anna obtained a degree in Industrial Design at Brunel University before working at a number of creative companies working with a range of media including glass, textiles and recycled materials. She currently teaches design and technology at The Perse and makes her own products in the holidays. 24
Practical Photography Cost per week: Early bird £161, Full price £179 In this course we will learn to use a digital camera effectively for a range of different purposes and styles; whether it be how to take a close-up shot from nature, a dramatic sports photo or a visually striking portrait using artificial light. Exploring the different functions of the camera will be a crucial first step as well as examining how to frame a subject effectively for the purpose. Following the hours of photography, the pupils will have time to upload images to computers and investigate the possibilities given by editing software to bring the photos to their full potential. Suitable for beginner to intermediate level photographers. The days will run as follows: Day 1 – An introduction to the camera’s functions and a photographic treasure hunt. Day 2 – Nature Photography with a trip to the Cambridge Botanic Gardens. Day 3 – Sports Photography and capturing the moving image. Day 4 – Portrait Photography in natural and artificial lighting Day 5 – Editing and the final exhibition Dan Wansell: Dan grew up in London and Dorset. Between 2000 and 2006 he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art where he completed a BA (Hons) in Painting and an MFA in Art, Space and Nature. It was during his MFA that Dan developed a passion for photography. In 2009, he gained a PGCE from the University of Buckingham and, alongside making his own art work, he is also Head of Art and DT at The Perse Prep School in Cambridge. His work has been exhibited in London, Edinburgh and Chicago. Raph de Albuquerque: Raph is a graduate of the University of Nottingham where he studied the History of Art. Examining the photography of the 20th Century has long been a passion of his with the portrait work of David Bailey being a particular area of interest. Scratch Cost per week: Early bird £152, Full price £169 Some of the most successful computer games in history have been incredibly simple. From Frogger to Flappy Bird, Pacman to Pong, people have enjoyed making and playing basic games for decades. This course aims to give you the opportunity to make your own game from start to finish! We will be designing and drawing our own characters and backdrops, taking inspiration from the artwork of iconic games, and using Scratch to bring them to life. We will also look at the artwork and marketing used to promote these games, before we create our own cover art. The course is available to absolute beginners who have never used Scratch before, as well as more advanced users of the software. Amy Prebble: Amy is an Art and Design Technology Technician at The Perse Prep School. She graduated with a Degree in Fine Art from Loughborough University. She has a particular interest in the role art and design plays in technology. Pete Whitmell: Pete is Year 5 and 6 Computing Co-ordinator and Director of Enrichment at The Perse Prep School. A relatively recent convert to the joys of programming, he has thoroughly enjoyed finding new and engaging ways to teach children to code. Abigail Parker: Abigail obtained a degree in pre-clinical medical studies from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and studied medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital before beginning teaching at The Perse in September 2014. In 2017, Abigail took up a teaching post at St Faith's school in Cambridge.
