Summer Camp 2022 Guide More than a get-away, summer camp is a place where campers explore the outdoors, try new activities, practice independence away from home, learn to work with others, make new friends, and so much more. Whether they attend camp daily or spend a whole week away from home, they’ll discover, connect, and take-action on issues and challenges that are important to them while learning camp songs and games and joining in summer camp traditions. Any girl can attend Girl Scout Camp! Just join Girl Scouts for $25 at www.gsctx.org/join before registering for camp.
A letter from the director. Welcome to Girl Scout Camp, where our campers’ experience is our top priority. Thoroughly review this guide, the information on our Summer Camp webpage www.gsctx.org/summercamp and the Caregiver Guide sent after registration to be sure you don’t miss a thing. We anticipate COVID-19 will remain a factor during summer camp 2022. To protect the health and safety of our campers, their families, and our staff, summer camp will run a bit differently than in non-pandemic times but will function more like pre-pandemic years in comparison to summer camp 2021. • National staffing shortages have impacted the number of programs offered during each week of summer camp. If we are able to hire more staff than currently projected, we will add more programs as summer approaches. Stay tuned to our Summer Camp webpage for updates. • Due to limited capacity, resident (overnight) camp registration is limited to one session of resident camp per camper for the first several weeks of registration, to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to attend camp. • We are offering a limited number of half-week programs for our younger, less experienced campers. • Our Counselor in Training (CIT) program is a two-week program that involves working with younger campers. See the Leadership Programs section for more information. • Physicals and immunization records are required to attend resident (overnight) camp. • Health safety measures for campers and staff will include frequent hand washing, equipment sanitization, and some modification to the way all-camp activities and meals are conducted. • COVID-19 related processes and protocols may change based on the current state of the disease as we enter summer camp season. As summer approaches, please check for updates, added programs, and up to date COVID information at www.gsctx.org/summercamp. Happy Camping, Alicia “Bubba” Gust Camp Services Director
Registration dates. Registration for all camps is accessed online via www.gsctx.org/summercamp. • Registration for Camp Texlake sessions open at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 31. • Registration for Camp Kachina sessions open at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1. • Registration for council-led day camps open at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2. • Registration for resident (overnight) camp is limited to one session of resident camp per camper until the end of February. • Registration will open for those who want to register for additional sessions of resident camp and for campers from other councils on March 1. Campers who register for more than one week of resident camp before March 1 will have all but their first registration cancelled without notification. This includes waitlists. Registering to be added to a waitlist is equivalent to registering for an open week of camp. If you mistakenly register for the wrong camp session, do not re-register for another session. Contact customer care immediately to move your registration to the correct session. Correcting a registration error could take some time, so do your best to register for the correct session from the start. Email customercare@gsctx.org or call 1-800-733-0011 for support. Registering for camp. To sign up, visit www.gsctx.org/summercamp on or after the day your preferred camp session(s) open for registration. Keep in mind that many sessions fill quickly. All registration confirmations and camp information will be sent via email to the person who creates the registration. Please sign up using an email address that gets checked often, connecting to the individual who will complete the necessary camp paperwork for the designated camper. We discourage troop leaders from registering multiple members of their troop because all communications will be sent to the troop leader instead of the campers’ caregivers. If a troop leader wants to register members for camp using troop funds, please contact customercare@gsctx.org. A $50 deposit is required at the time of initial registration to hold a selected session. This includes waitlist registrations. If a camper does not get moved into the session for which they are waitlisted, the deposit will be refunded. Please do not register for more than two waitlisted sessions. Remember, you may only register for more than one camp session, including waitlisted sessions, beginning March 1, 2022.
Last Chance Registration Deadline: 14 days prior to the camp session start date. Payment Deadline: 30 days prior to the camp session start date. If you choose to pay only the $50 deposit at the time of registration, the system will automatically assign a payment plan that divides your remaining balance into two more payments. At any time, you may login to your account and pay your balance in full. Paying online is the quickest and most secure method to pay your camp balance. If you prefer to call us with your credit card information, we will accept payment over the phone. Payment may also be mailed by check to the council address. Any registrations submitted less than 30 days prior to the camp session start date must pay the balance in full. Using Program Credits to pay for camp. If your camper plans to sell 1,000+ boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and plans to choose a free standard week* of camp as their prize, they must still be registered following the standard camp registration process to reserve their spot and should sign up early to secure their preferred session. All camp registrations require a $50 deposit payment at the time of registration to hold the camp session. Once the Girl Scout Cookie Program is complete and all prizes are confirmed, campers who elect a free standard week of camp will be refunded the deposit paid to hold their camp spot. *Camps marked as Specialty Camp in the Camp Guide are excluded from the free standard week of camp offer. Securing financial assistance to attend camp. We believe every girl deserves to experience the magic of camp and we’re happy to help if it is needed. Please visit www.gsctx.org/fa to complete a Financial Assistance Application. Typically, financial assistance covers up to 50 percent of camp fees. When applying for financial assistance, follow the standard camp registration process to reserve your spot. All camp registrations require a $50 deposit payment at the time of registration to hold the camp session. Awarded financial assistance will be used to help pay the balance. After I register, when will I receive more information about camp? Immediately following your camp registration, you will receive an email including a receipt of your order, a Caregiver Guide that provides further information about camp policies and expectations, and access to the forms you must complete before your camper attends camp. If you do not receive the confirmation email/receipt soon after registering, please contact customer care at customercare@gsctx.org.
Choosing a camp session. To help ensure a great camper experience, register your camper for a session that is appropriate for their age and Girl Scout level. Grade levels are noted by their acronym in each camp session in the Camp Guide. Choose an age-appropriate session based on the grade your camper will be entering for Fall 2022. For example, if your camper is currently in 3rd grade and will be entering 4th grade in the fall, the camper should register into a 4th grade Juniors program, even if they have not officially bridged. See details below. D: Daisies* – Entering 1st grade in Fall 2022 B: Brownies – Entering 2nd or 3rd grade J: Juniors – Entering 4th or 5th grade C: Cadettes – Entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade S: Seniors – Entering 9th or 10th grade A: Ambassadors – Entering 11th or 12th grade *Campers should complete kindergarten before attending. Selecting camp buddies. At resident camp, we place our campers into cabins by program. Therefore, campers do not need to request buddies. If campers want to ensure they are together at camp, they should register into the same program. We discourage full troops and large groups (four or more) from attending camp together. Camp provides campers the opportunity to make new friends, take safe risks, and test their independence unburdened by the expectations of their day-to-day relationships and affiliations. We find troops who attend sessions together as a large group are less likely to achieve these benefits. Living unit assignments. Texlake Kachina Each program’s living unit and a brief Suncrest Wiki-up description of that program are listed in this guide. More information about Flora/Fauna Wigwam each unit, including photos, can be found at www.gsctx.org/camps. Treehouse Kiva During the registration process, you will have the opportunity to read Driftwood Yuma more about the different living units. Please be sure to choose a program with an assigned living unit that meets your camper’s needs, especially if they require certain amenities for medical conditions such as air conditioning or electricity. Campers cannot be assigned to a living unit different from their programs’ assigned space.
Ensuring your camper’s success at camp. To attend Girl Scouts of Central Texas’ summer resident camps, campers must be able to meet the following essential functions: • Move independently from place to place. • Independently meet personal needs (bathing, toileting, dressing, diet management, etc.) • Effectively interact in group-based program content. • Exhibit enough awareness to capably self-manage chronic illness. A camper must be aware of their own dietary restrictions, medication requirements, and potential restrictions on physical activity, and be able to alert counselors when they need additional assistance. Caregivers of campers with special needs or unique habits may contact customercare@gsctx.org in advance of registration so the best placement and appropriate accommodations can be made. Camp session programming. All camps are designed to provide a traditional Girl Scout Camp experience with a ‘twist’. The ‘twist’ is the theme of the program you choose at registration. For example, Harriet Potter is not intended to be a fully immersive Harry Potter camp, but rather a week of traditional Girl Scout Camp with a Harry Potter spin to it. Our specialty camps, like horses or SCUBA, spend a lot of time doing other activities as well. If you have questions about the program for which you intend to register, contact us at customercare@gsctx.org. All resident campers take part in traditional camp activities like campfire, songs, arts and crafts, and games. Weather permitting, resident campers can swim each day at camp. Each program listed in this guide includes some basic information about planned activities. However, we promote girl-led opportunities, and we offer a certain amount of freedom for campers as a group to choose additional program options during their stay. To guarantee your camper will engage in certain activities like sailing, kayaking, or high ropes, make sure you choose a program that lists those activities in the description. Love horses? Make sure to choose a horse program!
