Welcome to Germany’s major economic congress! Where are Germany and Europe headed? How are the economy, politics and society managing the new American trade policy, Brexit and the populist and protectionist voices that are on the rise? These are only some of the matters we will discuss at the Economic Summit of Süddeutsche Zeitung this year. The SZ Economic Summit is the most important economic congress of the country. For more than a decade now, first-rate speakers and participants from business and politics have been meeting at the Berlin Adlon Hotel in November each year. In the very heart of the capital city, the CEOs of DAX-listed companies and the leaders of European corporations debate fundamental subjects that move the economy with owners and managing directors of successful medium-size companies and start-ups. This year, too, we expect more than 70 top-notch speakers from politics, the economy, the sciences and culture. Instead of long-winded speeches, the SZ Economic Summit offers a variety of discussions, cross-examinations and disputes, facilitated by senior editors of Süddeutsche Zeitung. This year, for the first time ever, from Monday to Wednesday. Thus, we can offer you three full days packed with our programme and an opportunity to discuss in detail all aspects that move the economy and its protagonists. On the following pages, you will learn more about the unique character of the SZ Economic Summit. Come join us – be it for three days or for one; just as your schedule will permit.
Our topics 2018 We want to get to the bottom of current challenges managers across all industries are facing in regard to digitisation: how can we put up a healthy competition for US internet giants? What role do data protection and data security play in the success of companies? And how does the US perceive and evaluate the start of a new era in Europe? In light of this, we have currently planned the following rounds of discussion, cross-examinations and disputes:* Political challenges Economic challenges • Where is Europe headed? • Europe and its champions • Does the social market economy still work? • Humility and mindfulness – managers as role models • A new Europe – what’s next? • How to stay agile and innovative as a business? • Lead differently: what managers can learn from athletes Digital challenges • Pioneers of change • The blockchain revolution – an opportunity for • What will become of Germany? businesses? • Why digitisation only works with diversity • The digital superpowers of tomorrow • Man or machine – are we running out of work? • Germany, your robots • Is digitisation destroying our society? • Germany’s chances in digitisation • Digital Europe: three countries and their vision • Air taxi or e-car – the future of networked mobility • Data protection and data security – what businesses can do * Subject to change We are expecting more than 70 top-notch speakers once again. This year, too, we will start planning the programme of the SZ Economic Summit early on – and will adapt it to current developments right up to the end. Confirmed speakers to date include Ann-Kristin Achleitner (Technical University of Munich), Philipp Depiereux (etventure), Pascale Ehrenfreund (German Aerospace Centre, DLR), Markus Gabriel (University of Bonn), Markus Haas (Telefónica Deutschland), Marit Hansen (Data Protection Commissioner of Schleswig-Holstein), Valerie Holsboer (Federal Employment Agency), Joe Kaeser (Siemens), Paul Kaffsack (Myra Security), Katja Kipping (DIE LINKE), Stephan Schambach (NewStore), Günther Schuh (e.Go Mobile), Jochen Schweizer (Jochen Schweizer Group) und Achim Wambach (Centre for European Economic Research).
Maintaining networks and establishing contacts At the SZ Economic Summit panel discussions are just as important as exchanges on the side-lines – during breaks, at lunch and at our evening events. Have a discussion with other congress participants and benefit directly from their experience, maintain your networks and establish new contacts. At the SZ Economic Summit you can get to know people from all kinds of different fields: representatives of large corporations as well as successful family entrepreneurs and rising start-up founders. Or use the opportunity – just like other businesses – to schedule your management, executive board or supervisory board meeting on the fringes of the SZ Economic Summit. We are happy to help you book a conference or meeting room.
Expanding the horizon What does the philosopher have to say about the economy? What can you learn from classical music that applies to everyday life? What can competitive athletes teach you about pressure and motivation? And how can you deal with stage fright in front of the TV camera? If you are also interested in these types of questions beyond the field of economy, the SZ Economic Summit is the place for you. Just as Süddeutsche Zeitung has more to offer than a business section, our congress offers more than mere debates on economic issues. In our evening discussion rounds we engage in conversation with top people from the sciences, culture, society and sports, in recent years, for example, with soccer coach Thomas Tuchel, the TV Tatort detective Axel Milberg, Michelin-starred chef Cornelia Poletto, twice Olympic champion Britta Steffen, former national soccer player Thomas Hitzlsperger or the photojournalist Julia Leeb. They all recount how they made it to the top.
