The Russell Group

UK: What Happens Post-
                            Application?
➢Before January 15th
o The UCAS coordinator will validate applications and send them off to UCAS
o This can only be done once the UCAS form has been entirely completed and
      payment made

➢For March 31st
o Applicants should receive offers from some or all universities selected
o This is not guaranteed, however, and students without offers should make an
appointment with the UCAS advisor to look at alternatives, such as UCAS EXTRA
o Universities will make conditional offers. This means the overall grade a university
will require an applicant to get at the baccalaureate as well as, in some cases, grades
      for specific subjects
2 o See next slide for some more non-contractual information to help you make choices.

UK: What Happens Post-
                                Application?
➢For June 9th
o Students reply to UCAS, accepting two offers, a “firm” acceptance and an “insurance” acceptance
o Students decline all other offers

➢When the Results Come Out
o Applicants may get a place on both choices, depending how well their exams go. They can then
confirm their firm and reject their insurance choice
o Applicants may not get their firm choice grades but do well enough to accept their insurance choice
o Applicants may not get either firm or insurance offers but be offered an alternative by the
university/college – a 'changed course offer' (which they'll need to accept or decline)
o Applicants may not get a place, but they can search through the UCAS Clearing service to see what
courses still have vacancies. In this case, it is strongly advised to make an appointment with the UCAS
        coordinator
o Applicants may do better than expected and consider a new, more ambitious choice altogether
2 through UCAS adjustment

Etudes en Irlande
Irish universities offer a high-quality educational experience at low cost to EU/UK citizens.

1.EU & UK students must apply via CAO (www.cao.ie), ideally by 1st February (late applications possible for many programmes in March and April). International
students apply direct.

2.Ca ndida tes ma y a pply for up to 10 progra mmes a t “Level 8” (honours degree - 3 or 4 years duration) and up to 10 “Level 7” (ordinary degree - 3 years)
programmes. These are entered into two separate lists in strict order of preference, and candidates may receive one offer from each list.

3.The English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 or 12/20 in English in either the general baccalaureate or the OIB (coefficient >5, otherwise 14/20 required) .

4.Supporting documents such as IELTS and a certified copy of the original baccalaureate transcript (+ translation) are sent to CAO by post as soon as they
become available.

5.There is no personal statement or reference.

6.Candidates are ranked according to the number of points they obtain in their baccalaureate. Points are calculated based on the overall average (some
programmes have specific subject requirements).

7.There is an alternative admissions scheme for students whose academic performance has been impacted by a disability.

8.Candidates are notified of their admission decision in mid-August.

9.Most EU & UK students qualify for the Free Fees Initiative, but they pay an annual Student Contribution of around 3,000€ (low income exemptions).

10.There is a national shortage of dedicated student accommodation; the situation is particularly acute in Dublin.
