LICHTGRENZE | 25th Anniversary of the fall of the BERLIN WALL Public Light Art Installation To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, an extraordinary light installation – The LICHTGRENZE (The Border of Lights) – was created, following the former route of the so-called Berliner Mauer. From the 7th – 9th of November the 15.3 kilometer frontier that once divided the city center was re-imagined in light by thousands of illuminated balloons. Running through the center of Berlin, from Bornholmer Straße to the Ober-baumbrücke, the installation stretched past the Mauerpark, along the Berlin Wall memorial on Bernauer Straße through to the Brandenburg Gate, over Potsdamer Platz to Checkpoint Charlie and on to the East Side Gallery. The brothers Christopher Bauder and Marc Bauder conceived the idea of the LICHTGRENZE in 2011. It was part of the anniversary celebrations being organized by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH as part of an initiative from the city of Berlin. WHITEvoid developed and produced the 8000 battery powered light elements. DEEP WEB INSTALLATION | CTM Festival Berlin & Festival of Lights Lyon Audiovisual Live Performance & Light Art Installation Deep Web is a monumental immersive audiovisual installation created by light and media artist Christopher Bauder (WHITEvoid) together with composer and musician Robert Henke (aka Monolake). It brings together decades of separate research and experimentation by two artists with unique visions and passions for sound and light, and by innovative companies working in these fields. Deep Web plunges the audience into a ballet of iridescent kinetic light and surround sound. The generative, luminous architectural structure weaves 175 motorized spheres and 12 high power laser systems into a 25 meter wide and 10 meter high super-structure, bringing to life a luminous analogy to the nodes and connections of digital networks. Moving up and down, and choreographed and synchronized to an original multi-channel musical score, the spheres are illuminated by blasts of colourful laser beams resulting in three-dimensional sculptural light drawings and arrangements in cavernous darkness. GRID INSTALLATION | Festival of Lights Lyon Audio-Visual Live Performance & Light Art Installation GRID combines electronic live music, kinetic movement and light animation. 50 motorized suspended LED-rod triangles form a massive dynamic GRID that spreads over 200 square meters. Live generated sound connects directly to light animations and triggers spatial movements. Every sound and fragment of music composed by Robert Henke corresponds to a visual impulse and triggers a spatial alteration of the mechatronic display. GRID is an artistic approach to manifesting computer generated shapes and surfaces in real space in the form of an audio-visual live performance. Abstract light lines of early 3D computer graphics inspired a polygonal grid suspended above the crowd. Computer-generated content is directly perceived as a tangible spatial experience without using a screen. As 3D computer graphics can be rotated in virtual space, spectators can roam freely below the animated light sculpture to alter their perspective and perception of the piece. Music stirs the emotions, while the mechanical movements and changes of light fascinate the eye. By doing so, the installation speaks to a fundamental fact of modern life: computers and machines have become part of our natural environment. KINETIC LIGHTS INSTALLATIONS
ORBITAL | Autostadt | Wolfsburg 2015
ORBITAL | Autostadt | Wolfsburg 2015 Circular Flip Dot Sculpture With almost 180.000 mechanical platelets (so-called flip dots) which rotate by an electromagnetic pulse, ORBITAL is the largest flip dot installation in the world. The kinetic sculpture was designed and developed by WHITEvoid specifically for the customer center of Volkswagens Autostadt (car city) in Wolfsburg, Germany. Originally used for airports and railway stations, the analog flip dot technology is reminiscent of the early seventies, a time when traveling was still an adventure. The ORBITAL installation provides a similar experience, beeing sculpture, information carrier and media artwork at the same time. The visitors receive pick up information for their new car and simultaneously follow the play of the animated tiles to pass the waiting time. Ornaments and structures move in sync to disintegrate shortly thereafter. The resulting mechanical clicking acts as an almost symphonic sound bed and announces content updates to the display. All this is made possible by advanced computerized control technology, which is located inside the rings. In order to control this vast amount of flip dots, about 500 meters data and power cables were installed. Nearly one hundred IP addresses are used for adressing the integrated control interfaces. With a diameter of 9 meters ORBITAL is also the world’s first double-sided curved flip dot board. Even if a single flip dot weighs considerably less than one gram, the whole installation has a total weight of 3 tons. COLOR MANIFESTO | Car Exhibition | L’Atelier Renault
COLOR MANIFESTO | Car Exhibition | L’Atelier Renault Interior Design & Light Art Installation WHITEvoid creates a spectacular exhibition and light art installation for L´Atelier Renault on Champs-Élysées in Paris. Renault presents six new car prototypes inspired by an emotional life cycle. WHITEvoid designed both interior architecture and illumination for the exhibition. The space is arranged in such a way as to tell the story of life stages. It is illuminated by an encompassing 3D ceiling light sculpture. The sculpture consists of 750 RGB LED rods, organized symmetrically in 5 rows. It has a wave-like shape symbolizing non-linear life-paths. Rods subtly change colors. These were carefully selected to match the modern teachings of color-psychology. Each part of the exhibition has distinct light color animations and a corresponding car model. This is more than a car show and more than a light exhibition it is a place where life meets technology, color meets feeling, and all blend into a unique experience. KINETIC SKIN | Concept | Energy and Future Storage at the Heidelberg Energy Park
KINETIC SKIN | Building Kinetic Façade Concept | Heidelberg Energy Park Concept and Design of the kinetic façade for the Energy and Future Storage Competition: 1st place Approximately 20,000 diamond-shaped plates made of thin metal are integrated in the meshes of the steel net. The sub construction allows a wind-induced rotation of the platelets on both sides. The matt surface of the metal breaks the sunlight at different angles depending on the sun. This results in a dynamic, constantly changing surface of light and shadow. Waves caused by winds run over the front building skin and bring them to life. FLARE FACADE | Building Façade Concept & Prototype
FLARE FACADE | Building Façade Concept & Prototype Kinetic Ambient Reflection Membrane FLARE is a pneumatic building facade system that consists of a number of tiltable metal shingle bodies. An infinite array of shingles can be mounted on any building or wall surface in a modular system in multiples of 4x4 FLARE units. Each metal shingle reflects the bright sky or sunlight when in vertical standby position. When the shingle is tilted downwards by a computer controlled pneumatic piston, its face is shaded from the sky light and this way appears as a dark pixel. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight the individual shingles of the FLARE system act like pixels formed by natural light. The system is controlled by a computer to form any kind of surface animation. Sensor systems inside and outside the building communicate the buildings activity directly to the FLARE system, which acts as the buildings lateral line. FLARE turns the building facade into a penetrable membrane, breaking with all conventions of the building surface as a static skin. INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES
FLUIDIC Sculpture in Motion | Hyundai Motor Company
FLUIDIC Sculpture in Motion | Hyundai Motor Company EXHIBITION & interactive LIGHT ART installation FLUIDIC was created by WHITEvoid as an interactive light art installation for Hyundai’s solo exhibition in the Temporary Museum of New Design at the Milan Design Week 2013. FLUIDIC combines 8 high-speed laser projectors, a physical point cloud formed by 12,000 spheres and the interactions of its visitors to transform Hyundai’s design philosophy »Fluidic Sculpture« into a vivid art experience. Shaped by user interaction, molecules of light begin to swarm and aggregate. Ever-changing dynamic light sculptures are created, conveying the inspirational role played by nature and the ability to continuously adapt and evolve. The suspended point cloud particles are calculated from the viewpoints of the laser projectors. This allows the laser beams to reach all spheres without occlusion even deep inside the array. The laser lit spheres form three-dimensional graphics without any sweet or blind spots. Keeping the same density and intensity the FLUIDIC graphics enable their viewers to observe and interact simultaneously from every point of view. The installation uses multiple 3D tracking systems to sense its visitors. MENDELSSOHN EFFEKTORIUM | Mendelssohn Museum in Leipzig
MENDELSSOHN EFFEKTORIUM | Mendelssohn Museum in Leipzig Virtual Orchestra The Effektorium is a technically complex, but user friendly, and ex- ceedingly fun installation at the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Museum in Leipzig. The museum visitor enters the room to find himself at the conductors stand with digital music notes and an orchestra of 13 speakers in front of him. Each speaker represents a different group of instruments. The visitor is given a conductor’s baton, and the concert may begin. On the repertoire are works of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. By browsing the electronic note-pad the visitor freely chooses which work he/she wishes to conduct, and by swinging the conductor’s baton decides upon the tempo. The visitor can also exclude a certain group of instruments or decide to hear just one instrument solo. In this way one enjoys a very personalized version of Mendelssohn-Bartholdys work. The Effektorium is exceptional in its kind, and put the Museum of Medelssohn-Bartholdy among the most elaborate music museums in the world.
