a man and his boat Classic and Wooden Boat Festival 2016 Gary Doornbos along with Geoff and Rhonda Hughes sailed Gary’s boat Mahogany to the C&WB Festival held at the Australian National Maritime Museum on Darling Harbour in Sydney on April 17-18. They sailed out of the GC Seaway on April 10 with overnight stays at Yamba, Coffs Harbour, Camden Haven, Port Stephens and Pittwater. They encountered mainly smooth to moderate seas, but on the way back they bypassed Yamba and left Coffs Harbour at 3am reaching the GC Seaway 20 hours later, this was to reach home ahead of heavy southerly winds sweeping up the coast over the ANZAC weekend. Gary, Rhonda and Geoff about to leave Darling Harbour Mahogany in Sydney Harbour While heading out from Yamba, Rhonda phoned “Macca”, Ian McNamara’s ABC radio program “Australia Mahogany with Sydney’s iconic landmarks Allover” to tell the story of their adventures. Rhonda and Geoff have been part of the crew on Mahogany in the SYC Powerboat Navigation Championship for over 15 years. Gary has taken Mahogany to the C&WB Festival before, in 2004. The Festival is normally held every two years, but there has been a gap of 4 or 5 years, but it is going to be a regular event once again. This year there was a great array of classic boats including timber dinghys like the one Gary built especially for the show. Also on display were everything including work boats, steamboats, speedboats, cruisers, sail boats, America’s Cup challenger Gretel 2, the Endeavour replica and much more. Racing began on Friday 25th and concluded on Saturday 26th. Although three days of racing where scheduled, day three scheduled for Sunday 26th March was called off due to a band of storms moving over the course. “It was an awesome weekend with light conditions which tested the tactical side of our racing. And even though there was not big fleets with the level of sailing present both me and Chris are very happy to have done as well as we did. It was good close racing and had us all pushing hard. sailing academy The New term has started for our junior sailors in the Sailing Academy and our sailors are getting stuck straight back into it! We have had a considerable increase in the number of sailors in our Bronze fleet and this is great to see this young sailors so gung ho. With training now back in full swing our sailors are once again building on their skills as well as working on developing new ones. Term three this year has also seen a change in structure, Bronze fleet will still be sailing right the way through as per normal, as for Silver and Gold fleet however we will be sailing on Blazers every Friday afternoon. This will be a great way of getting our young sailors to work together, as well as develop their skills in a different type of boat. Southport Yacht Club recently hosted the 2016 International Optimist Queensland State Titles. With over 50 boats, it was a great sight to see so many young sailors out on the Gold Coast Broadwater. With very light winds over the two days it really challenged our sailors, however despite this, all our sailors did a great job and lots of fun was had. We now look forward to hosting our O’Pen Bic and Sabot Titles in the coming weeks. The Gold Coast Marine Expo is just around the corner and the Sailing Academy will once again be making an appearance with a range of sailing boats for young and old to jump in and give it a go. So come down and see us over the weekend for a fun day out with the whole family. Article by Joe Sabin Club Coach Southport Yacht Club | iN SYnC | 25
queensland optimist titles 2016 Fifty of the keenest young sailors headed to SYC’s Hollywell Sailing Squadron at the end of April to compete for the Queensland State Optimist Titles. The regatta, hampered by a lack of wind, still managed to get four races off on the first day for the Open and Intermediate fleets, but only one race on Sunday for the Open Fleet. The drizzling rain on Sunday did not stop the junior sailors having fun during the postponement but we heard big cheers as they were called to the water for racing. There were competitors from all over Australia vying for the State Championship Title with Cole Tapper on Cool Change from Woollahra Sailing Club in New South Wales taking out the top Trophy, with Lucy Alderson on Tick-Tack from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in WA taking out the first (1st) Girl. Three special trophies were awarded: The Jessica Watson Perpetual Trophy – awarded to the first Queensland Girl - went to our own Ashleigh Swadling on Stay Calm and Keep Flat; Most Improved went to Isabella Bruce on Destination Unknown from North Queensland Cruising Yacht Club and the prestigious Sportsmanship award to Green Fleeter Ronan Carter- Murphy from SYC.
