PREPARING FOR LENT CELEBRATE LENT WITH ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI After a year full of sorrows, we should ready ourselves for a season of somber humility. Lent offers an invitation for us to pray, to say I am sorry, and to look inward. The season of Lent was one of sacrifice and introspection for St. Francis. As our guide through this holy season, he is inviting us to do the same. Our Lent with St. Francis celebration begins February 17. Click here to sign up! Suffering is hard, and it’s hard to talk about. And yet, it is one of the realities that all human beings share. Is there sense to be made of it? What is the connection between suffering and faith? In this workshop, Peggy Guerrero, MEd, MPM, will use Sacred Scripture, literature, and other media to help participants explore this very human experience and reflect on how we can engage suffering in a spirit of faith. The cost for the workshop is $18.00. To register, please contact Jordan Ministry Team at (520) 623-2563 or email jmt@jordanministry.org. February 14, 2021 | The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 5

PARISH NEWS Minister Schedule February 20 & 21 SATURDAY, 5:00PM MASS Greeter Carol Wagner Williams Greeter Tom Hogan Lector Frank Hall MofHC Joie Murray MofHC Mary Giegerich SUNDAY, 7:00AM MASS Greeter Tiedemann Family Greeter Debbie Adams Lector Marc Valdenegro MofHC Willard Adams MofHC Tiedemann Family SUNDAY, 9:00AM MASS Question: Is Ash Wednesday a holy day of obligation? Greeter Jan Grossi Answer: Greeter Despite the often packed churches, you may be surprised to hear that the Lector Suzanne Roelike answer is no! Holy days of obligation commemorate a particular event (such as MofHC Joe Grossi the birth of Christ at Christmas) or celebrate particular people (such as Mary’s Immaculate Conception or the feast of All Saints). Ash Wednesday is a day of MofHC Claudia Andersen penance, fasting, and abstinence to begin the season of Lent. In a sense, it SUNDAY, 11:00AM MASS focuses on a concept rather than something particular and concrete. Greeter Donna Morgan Of course, repentance ought to be reflected in particular, concrete ways! That’s Greeter one of the reasons that attending Mass on Ash Wednesday is a very good idea. It marks the beginning of a solemn season of penance. Despite all its Lector Jeff Morgan comparisons to the desert, Lent can be very fruitful for our spiritual growth! MofHC Bob Foy ©LPi MofHC Mike Emory While Ash Wednesday holds great meaning for the faithful, in Church history it has never been a Holy Day of Obligation. Moreover, please recall that the general dispensation from Mass attendance remains in effect in the Diocese of Tucson. If you would like to watch Ash Wednesday Mass, Fr. Alonzo will be live If you know of anyone who is -streaming the 8:00am Mass on our Facebook page. homebound and needs assistance, please contact the STS. CYRIL & METHODIUS Parish Office so we can help. These brothers by birth became brothers in mission. Cyril and Methodius were born to a Greek diplomat in the 800s. The two brothers served in local governmental posts before each withdrew to a monastery. Their lives changed when the political leadership in Eastern Europe — what is now Ukraine SUNDAY — requested priests who spoke the native Slavic languages. Cyril and Methodius had proven CONTRIBUTIONS themselves as able administrators and holy men, so FEBRUARY 7, 2021 they were sent as missionaries. First, Cyril invented offertory collection an alphabet. This became the foundation for what is now used today and is still called the Cyrillic $4,131.00 alphabet! Next, the brothers translated the Gospels, WeShare, online giving the Psalms, and other liturgical books into the $ 939.00 native language of the people. Their work spread across Eastern Europe. God indeed raises up saints for their times! February 14, 2021 | The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time 7
