Religious Education Good Morning RE Families, We hope that the transition from Christmas Break to back to school and RE is going well for everyone. Just wanted to let you know of some upcoming important dates. There is a Parent Meeting for those of you who have children tak- ing their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. The meet- ing is Monday Jan. 25th at 6pm in the Parish Center. We will be going over info and requirements that you will need to know for these sacraments. First Reconciliation Dates are Monday Feb. 8th and Tuesday Feb. 9th. Please keep all of our children in your prayers as they journey on towards their Sacraments. God Bless, Deacon Fred Ban, Director of RE SAINT OF THE WEEK St Fabian Pope and Martyr: was the bishop of Rome from 10 January 236 to his death on 20 anuary 250,succeeding Anterus. A dove is said to have descended on his head to mark him as the Holy Spirit's un- expected choice to become the next pope. He was succeeded by Cornelius. Most of his papacy was characterized by amicable relations with the imperial government, and the schism between the Roman congregations of Ponti- an and Hippolytus was ended. He divided Rome into diaconates and appointed secretaries to collect the records of the martyrs. He sent out seven "apostles to the Gauls" as missionaries, but probably did not bap- tize Emperor Philip the Arab as is alleged. He died a martyr at the beginning of the Decian persecution and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church.
This Week’s Question What exactly does "amen" mean? Answer: Amen is a word that came to English from Latin, which got it from Greek, which got it from Aramaic, which got it from Hebrew (technically, Aramaic may have had it anyway, before it became the standard language of the Jewish people a few centuries before the time of Christ). It is difficult to translate this word directly, which is often a reason that words are borrowed from other languages (i.e., if there’s no direct way to translate this foreign word, just borrow it). The specific Hebrew word amen (’amen ) appears to be derived from a related verb–’aman , which means “he confirmed, supported, or upheld.” This verb is also associated with the Hebrew word for truth (’emet ), which carries the idea of certainty or dependability (i.e., that which is true is that which is certain or dependable). ’Amen’ itself is an interjection used to agree with, affirm, approve, or emphasize something else that has been said. Thus when Jesus begins certain sayings by declaring “Amen, amen, I say to you . . . “ various Bible translations often render the “amen, amen” different ways. Because of the word’s association with the Hebrew terms for truth, the double amen is sometimes rendered “truly, truly” or “verily, verily.” Because of its association with the Hebrew terms for confirmation or dependability, one might also translate it “certainly, certainly” or “most assuredly.” When one says “amen” in response to a prayer, it serves as an affirmation of agreement with the content of the prayer (cf. 1 Cor 14:16)—in which case it is sometimes translated “So be it” (cf. CCC 2856)—or as an expression of faith that God will hear and act on the prayer. Bottom line: Amen is an interjection associated with the Hebrew words for truth and dependability, it conveys the idea of agreement or emphasis, and its meaning can be translated different ways depending on the context. PRAYER TO OUR LADY HEALTH OF THE SICK DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, united with Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman eople, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. He who took our suffering upon Himself, and burdened Himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of Resur- rection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas — we who are put to the test — and deliver us from every danger. O glorious and blessed Virgin. — Pope Francis, March 11, 2020.

Your gift is especially important this year, during the pandemic, as our diocese continues to explore new and innovative ways to serve those in need. The 2021 theme is Shining the Light of Christ. The 30 ministries the CMAA supports allow parishes to join together to shine Christ’s light to the benefit of many, from the poor and vulnerable to seminarians and schoolchildren. No parish could provide all of these ministries on its own. Our parish’s goal for the 2021 CMAA is $42,100, and 70 percent of any amount we raise over our goal will be returned to us. This is a great opportunity for our parish! Please review the materials you receive in the mail from the Diocese of Joliet and prayerfully reflect on your gift to this year’s annual appeal. If you do not receive a CMAA mailing, please contact the parish office.
