RE GION SQ THE REDBACKS NEED YOU! U N AS RTHER H PLEASE HELP! NO The NR needs some awesome people! NR President Jules Wone is appealing to some awesome people to step up and do a little volunteering to help NR Squash. You don’t have to be a committee member to help but that is still an option if that interests you. “Please consider what you can do to help out. Too few are doing everything in the NR and in the clubs. I hear the struggle from those in the NR that are feeling a bit burnt out. Everyone has skills that can be helpful at the junior tournaments, as committee members, writing grant applications, attending meetings, providing information for the newsletter, taking photos at events, fundraising, promoting squash, following up sponsors, there is so much each of us can do at our local clubs and for the NR. Please get involved”. Are you an awesome person? An awesome person is one who has a passion for squash (sport), has a little spare time on their hands who in turn could volunteer to their local club, to junior squash, to the Northern Region or to promotion. An awesome person has energy and a positive outlook. An awesome person is one who does as opposed to sitting back and just being critical. An awesome person is one who wants to make a difference. One who cares about our sport and wants to contribute to its development and growth. If you are an awesome person please step up and show us what you can do! We would love to welcome you aboard the NR Express ... yes, we are serious about building a healthier squash program in the NR. For more information about how you can get involved contact: Jules Wone on 040 0450 298
C K S A REDBSQUASH President’s Court PRESIDENT’S COURT With Jules Wone Northern Region Committee Racketball - Squash Queensland recently requested that Regions approach all their centres and clubs to find out what interest there is for racketball tournaments. The response in the NR has been pretty strong with Mackay, Townsville and Cairns indicating an interest to host racketball tournaments. The NR committee are now going to attempt to get a tournament or 2 underway in the Region. Please look out for these tournaments. It would be nice for lots of squash players and lots of new faces to join in. It may also get more people playing squash. Just so everyone knows the sport of racketball comes under Squash Australia and Squash Queensland and therefore NR also holds responsibility to promote racketball. Gayle has been working very hard to get the Northern Region webpage updated, including updated April 2021 NR Junior rankings. Please go to the webpage to have a look and let Gayle know if you have any ideas, what needs to be changed or if things can be done better. Any ideas would be greatly welcomed. This is the link to the Northern Region webpage: https://www.northernregionsquash.net Congratulations to Matthew Brazier, Michael Lawrence, Kurstyn Mather and Sophie Fadaley on your performances at the Australian Junior Championships. To qualify for selection to the Redbacks team, juniors must play three (3) of the four (4) NR Junior tournaments. A junior must play both compulsory tournaments in Cairns and Mackay and at least 1 tournament in Ingham (TBC) or Townsville. Juniors who meet this criteria will be given priority consideration when the Redbacks are selected regardless of strength of an individual who has not fully qualified or strength of the overall team. Please do not assume you will be selected to the Redbacks if you have not qualified by attending the required tournaments or have not provided medical evidence to remain eligible. Format of the NR Junior Tournaments: Compulsory tournaments (Mackay and Cairns) will be age and gender format. Non-Compulsory tournaments (Ingham and Townsville) will be divisions. Blue Cards Northern Region are now set up online to renew Blue Cards. Please contact me if you need to renew or apply for the first time. 2021 QUEENSLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS The QJC to be held in Cairns in June/July 2021. The Queensland Squash Administrator will manage the QJC. The functions the administrator will manage are the setup of SportyHQ,
C K S A REDBSQUASH President’s Court PRESIDENT’S COURT With Jules Wone setting the seedings according to the Queensland seedings list, setting the draws, match scheduling and being at the championships to run the individual and team events. Squash Queensland, NR and Cairns Squash are coordinating to make this event successful and memorable. Thanks to the few people who responded to my call for volunteers to help get different parts of the QJC ready to go. We still have lots to do and if you want to get involved please contact Gayle or myself. In particular we are seeking sponsors. Please be aware Northern Region Juniors who have qualified for the Northern Region but are not selected to the Northern Redbacks team may be released to be selected by the other 3 regions to play at the 2021 QJC. This is will be discussed with parents prior to junior's details being provided to Squash Queensland for this process. QUEENSLAND JUNIOR RANKINGS Since January 2020, the Queensland Junior rankings have been updated by the Squash Queensland Administrator. So far this is working very well and reducing the burden on the NR Selectors to apply the actual ranking policy after junior tournaments. Also provides consistency across the regions. 1 April 2021 Queensland Junior rankings are available on the Squash Queensland Webpage. The State junior rankings and associated combined seedings will be relied upon by the NR tournament hosts to set draws. Timely appeals will be essential. The appeal process in the policy provides for an internal review (like the old policy to give the rankers a chance to affirm or change their mind), and if the appellant remains aggrieved by that review decision, the appeal must be decided by an independent decision maker. Please be aware if juniors are not affiliated again after 12 April 2021, they will not continue to be listed in the Queensland and NR ranking list. AFFILIATION WITH SQUASH QUEENSLAND Affiliation will be due after 12 April 2021, unless advised differently from Squash Queensland. If a further extension is granted, Squash Queensland will advise and an email sent. Affiliation is compulsory for all juniors to compete in the NR Junior tournaments and in the State and National Championships. Juniors must have full affiliation to play for the Northern Redbacks. Affiliation status will be checked prior to all NR Junior tournaments and the Queensland Junior Championships. 2021 Affiliation fees will soon be announced.
C K S A REDBSQUASH President’s Court PRESIDENT’S COURT With Jules Wone Please remember affiliation comes with many benefits – especially personal insurance when participating in the game or related activity, such as fundraising. Only affiliated juniors will be provided a Queensland and Northern Region ranking. Juniors whose affiliation is not paid after 12 April 2021 will not continue to have a Queensland and Northern Region ranking as per May 2021. Please note players living in Mackay, Townsville, Ingham and Cairns and all areas in between along the coast are not considered remote and do not qualify for the Remote Member Registration. NORTHERN REGION MEETING The next Northern Region meeting will be at the 2021 Mackay NR Closed Junior Championships Saturday 1 May 2021. Please send your agenda items to Kirsty Hoani E: hoanikr23@hotmail.com Standing items on the agenda are coaching clinics, regional participation, grants, 2021 QJC. FUNDING/GRANTS Cairns Squash have been successful to be awarded a grant from the Cairns Regional Council for $6,500 towards the QJC. These funds will contribute to court hire and promotion of Cairns Squash to the locals. This grant also ensures more funds will remain available to the Northern Region to contribute to NR members in the future. Grant money is really free money available to all clubs if you are willing to spend some time seeking suitable grants and completing the applications. Organisation applications vary in complexity. However, most applications are relatively simple and do not take too much time to complete. All centres should be applying for grants. Please consider how you can help your club and if you have any ideas or you can help with identifying grants and writing applications please contact Karlye Rhodes E: doug.rhodes@bigpond.com for assistance. Currently Squash Australia are also offering all squash clubs the opportunity to have support to apply for grants. For more information E: facilities@squash.org.au or go to https://www.squash.org.au/w/membership/facility-grant-writers. Cash for Cans is a great fundraising idea for clubs. The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle days are back on with very strict Covid-19 restrictions. Please consider getting a group together to fundraise for your club.
C K S A REDBSQUASH President’s Court PRESIDENT’S COURT With Jules Wone SPORTY HQ Please do not pay for any Sporty HQ club subscriptions prior to discussing your clubs status Squash Queensland and encourage all your club members to pay their affiliations to take advantage of the club affiliation. Squash Queensland have announced they are currently trialling a few different court and player online management tools which are programs that provides similar functions to Sporty HQ. This trial is to understand which system is most adequate to meet the needs of Squash in Queensland. NR VOLUNTEERS ... HELP IS NEEDED IN THE NR CAN YOU HELP? Everyone has skills that can be helpful at the junior tournaments, as committee members, writing grant applications, attending meetings, providing information for the newsletter, taking photos at events, fundraising, promoting squash, following up sponsors, there is so much each of us can do at our local clubs and for the NR. Please get involved. COACHING If anyone is keen to consider hitting the court in the capacity as a coach and do their Level 1 In coaching please let me know so we can support your development. I look forward to seeing you all at the 2021 Mackay Northern Region Closed Championship. Drive safe and Keep Squash Fun! Jules Wone President ... Squash Queensland Northern Region. A brief word from VP Gayle Baxter What a nonstop start to my new position, watching our ever growing under 9s head off to their first out of town Tournament was worth it. With the younger players learning the rules that come with full day tournaments, they all seemed to embrace it so energetically, that a lot of them insisted on going to Ingham while still in the car driving home from Townsville. Seeing them getting up and learning to score on the IPAD with aid of an older player, to watching their little faces as they cheered on some of the more senior players, who they admire. I look forward to seeing as many of these little superstars as we can in Mackay. I am learning as I go, so if anyone has a topic you would like to know more about, feel free to get in touch with me and I can do some research to find out what I can and add it to the next newsletter.

2021 Ingham Junior Qualifier Thanks Kim DiBella Ingham Squash Club hosted a very successful NR Redbacks junior qualifying tournament at the Ingham Squash Centre last weekend. Thirty-six talented players from Mackay to Cairns took part in the third qualifying tournament on the NR calendar for 2021. Talented brothers, Brayden and Damien Marino, playing in their first tournament, took out runner up in both their divisions. Upcoming star, Kara Nash, also playing in her first tournament fought hard to grab third place in Division 5. Older brother, Jack, came in runner up in the all Ingham Division 3 podium alongside, winner, Sharief Kabay and third place, Carter Bates.
