SO IT GOES…” A former student of the prestigious Central St Martin’s, Charming Baker has gone on to have a series of sold out shows in NYC, LA and London, displayed work in the Victoria and Albert Museum and is a presenter for SKY ARTS The Art Show. Although primarily a painter, Baker has produced sculptural pieces in a wide and varied choice of material. Known to purposefully damage his work by drilling, cutting and even shooting it, Baker intentionally puts in to question the preciousness of art and the definition of its beauty, adding to the emotive charge of the work Charming Baker, ‘Jane Doe’, Limited Edition Screenprint, £790 he produces. Legendary critic Edward Lucie-Smith has described Baker’s paintings as having, “something more, a kind of romantic melancholy that is very British. And sometimes the melancholy turns out to have sharp claws. The pictures make you sit up and examine your conscience”. Jealous were, as ever, by Charming Baker’s side and assisted him in the installation and manning of the exhibition, as well as setting up a dedicated Print Studio within the exhibition space and live printing throughout the duration of the exhibition. Working predominately in pen, Kemp’s artwork is inspired by nature, observing both the real and imagined, constructing and remodelling the landscape. Her work forms part of many esteemed collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum Permanent Print Collection and The Royal Collection as well as having exhibited widely across the UK. Here Olivia Kemp tells us about her experience of working at Jealous for the launch of her new edition… ‘I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jealous since my involvement in the Jealous Prize in 2013. Since then I have released 3 further editions with their help. This print and the previous one are both downsized versions of the original drawings, using high resolution scans. The original drawings are around 2 metres by a metre, so releasing a limited run of prints on a more domestic scale and connecting with a wider range of collectors really is a pleasure. My most recent print is from a drawing I worked on in my studio, which took 5 months to complete. It’s based on a trip to Bavaria and inspired by the landscape, architecture and particularly the castles there. The work is a re-imagining of that landscape; where known places are extrapolated out beyond any sense of geography or proportion.’ Olivia Kemp’s winning Jealous Prize screenprint can be viewed in our galleries or online at jealousgallery.com

Whilst the Jealous Team were live printing throughout the duration of the festival in the Faraway Forest, Charming Baker held a philosophical talk in the music and film arena on the Sunday afternoon. Charming Baker’s talk, ‘If I sell my soul can I buy it back later? Are we really creating anything or are we just moving stuff around?’, focussed on his work and practice examining art, life, death and the fear of doing absolutely sweet nothing! Alongside his talk, Baker also made the big reveal of his life-sized bronze sculpture of a fallen soldier, entitled ‘Oh What Will Be Made Of The Mess We Have Made?’ In conjunction with Baker’s talk, Jealous Print Studio ran a stand in the Faraway Forest over the weekend with free live-screenprinting sessions. Festival-goers were able to print their own exclusive edition by Baker, a single one colour postcard-sized bird, signed by the artist himself. A huge thanks to the amazing Latitude Team for having the Jealous Gang and for letting us run riot!

Entitled ‘Inner (Deep) Space’, the show at the Park Village Studios, Regents Park was his largest to date and a much talked about highlight of Frieze week. In Jealous’ Studio Levine produced two very special editions of his iconic image, Lightness of Being. The first was a seven colour screenprinted image with Swarovski crystals, delicately hand placed by Levine. The second was the EJAF edition, a 3 colour screenprint on top of a single 24 carat gold leaf, the sales of which are donated entirely to the Elton John Aids Foundation. Alongside these two works Chris worked on a series of unique cross works that formed an impressive grid of colour in the exhibition. Running for a very short duration, from 5th – 9th October, the exhibition also showcased an immersive light installation with lasers refracting on a meteorite, creating an otherworldly luminous glow which caused a range of reactions from visitors, the most popular being laying on the floor glazing at the slowly rotating outer-space-rock. Chris Levine’s works can be seen on appointment in the galleries, please get in touch at info@jealousgallery.com

This year Kate returned to Jealous Studios with yet another exciting and inspiring project, here she tells us more… “The original poster was commissioned by The Berwick Street Film Collective in support of The Night Cleaners Campaign in the 1970’s. It was designed and printed using letterpress on newsprint paper with Ken Campbell on a college press. The long diagonal texts are ‘timelines’ referring to people, meetings, demonstrations, leafleting and filming. One of the few remaining copies of the poster was scanned for archive reasons and being inspired by the events of last year, I had the idea of reproducing full size copies of the poster. A newly re-mastered version of their film ‘36 to ‘77 was screened at the BFI SouthBank in 2018. Also, there would be a launch for the full DVD and Blu-ray versions as box sets, by Raven Row and the publication of a new book of essays and source documents covering the two films. Having met Alex Sainsbury at the BFI I suggested Jealous would be able to print a very exact version and he commissioned me to print a few posters to display at his launch. I decided to design a broadsheet version of the poster that I could give away at the event. On the reverse side of the poster, pages could be sequenced from a book design layout I had made at the time, as part of a funding

He is the renowned creator of the New Brutalism Collection of Photography on Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter and the photographer of post-war modernism and the author of three books: Brutal London, Finding Brutalism and recently published Concrete Poetry: Post-War Modernist Public Art. Finding Brutalism was a winner of the 2018 DAM Architectural Book Awards and his books are held in collections such as RIBA, Tate, V&A, and MOMA. Simon Phipps’ photography provides a unique perspective and portrays Brutalist architecture in a sensitive, realistic and distinctive manner. Here Simon explains the why he finds brutalist building a source of creative inspiration... ‘I have always been interested in the sculptural qualities of brutalist buildings - the combination of expressed structures and use of materials ‘as found’ has produced some remarkable pieces of architecture. My photographs seek out these elements and I wanted to look at ways of enhancing and extending the sculptural and material possibilities of the compositions. Looking at the layout of one of my books and seeing the relationship of one photograph next to the other I began to explore the expression of graphic and structural forms by simply placing one image against another. The combined result was a reinvented spatial form, a memorable image with the sculptural qualities reinforced and amplified. A collaged, cut-up, hybrid, architectural space. Looking at the images I wanted to move them away from the purely photographic and thought that the best process to retain the detail whilst building on the materiality was a screenprint. Having talked the project through with Dario, I began work with William Kingett and the print evolved through a creative dialogue that pushed it into a space that I hadn’t anticipated. The idea was always simple, a halftone image, but Will’s suggestion of a solid grey to accentuate the sky allowed me to extend that plane to add a minimal graphic block that balances the abstraction of the entire composition. This is the sort of development that happens when dealing with real materials, paper and ink, in an innovative environment; I like that open-ended space where things remain mutable. Jealous Studio’s experimentation and allowance for things to evolve is the mark of creative experts who add real imaginative input to the realisation of a project.’ Find Simon Phipps’ new edition in our galleries or online at jealousgallery.com Left page photograph: Simon Phipps; Edith Avenue, Napper, Errington, Collerton & Allott, Washington, Tyne and Wear, 1961

Her work utilises both traditional and contemporary processes such as screenprinting, monoprint, painting and collage, alongside digital form. It was a pleasure to welcome Grizelda Kitching back into Jealous Print Studios to create two brand- new editions, inspired by images captured during her travels. Here she recalls the printing technique used to create her stunning editions in the Studio... ‘In 2017 I was awarded the annual Jealous Prize. As part of the prize I created two editions titled ‘Rum Punch’ (small and large) with the genius, printer Ben Challen. This year I have been back in the studio creating 2 further editions, both at the larger scale this time. My printer this year was Ines Fernandez De Cordova, we both studied MA Printmaking at Camberwell College of Arts and have been mates ever since. So it has been super fun being back in Jealous Studios. As the ‘Rum Punch’ editions were a sell-out success, we continued with a similar theme of tropical landscape imagery, but we decided to develop the process a little. The ‘Mexico’ and ‘Belize’ editions are 4/5 colour screenprints, so with more initial block colour than in the previous editions. The monoprint overlays are also enhanced by using True Grain to recreate stronger and consistent mark making. The finished prints are great, I am really happy with them. 36 Jealous Spring / Summer 2019 www.jealousgallery.com 37 Our ongoing initiative to support emerging new talent, The Jealous Prize is now in its 10th year and to celebrate this momentous occasion we have selected four winners! We are delighted to announce this year’s Jealous Prize Winners; Alvin Ong from Royal College of Art, Francisco Rodriguez from Slade School of Art, Lydia Boehm from Royal College of Art and Phillip Reeves from Goldsmiths. Chosen by Jealous’ Director, Galleries Director and Studio Manager, the winners work with our experienced studio team to create a limited edition screenprint or multiple which is then launched to an international audience alongside exhibitions in our two galleries. The Jealous Prize is an all-expenses-paid residency at Jealous Print Studios, in Shoreditch. Winners of the Jealous Prize also have their newly created limited edition print added to the growing archive of Winner’s editions in Victoria and Albert Museum’s Permanent Print Collection, who continue to collect the new editions produced each year. Gill Saunders, Senior Curator for Prints at the V&A, visited the Jealous Studio in 2013 and spoke of how delighted she was to receive such a diverse and important collection of work from a selection of the country’s best emerging talent. Jealous actively discovers new artists at the beginning of their artistic journey and provides the necessary support and confidence from them to make their move into the art market, as well as potentially discovering a new medium within which to express themselves. This year we have selected four recent graduates with innovative artworks and distinctive artistic styles to transfer into a limited edition screenprint. The artists used True Grain, a THE high quality textured polyester drawing film for artists and printmakers to produce images for exposure onto silk screens, completely eliminating the use of any digital equipment. The technique is difficult to master, however each artist proved themselves JEALOUS worthy of the challenge as can be seen from the beautiful editions created. The Jealous Prize Winners of 2019 will be launched at the Royal Academy for the London Original Print Fair from 25th – 28th April, followed by a dedicated exhibition at Jealous East from 30th May to 23rd PRIZE 2019 June, continuing at Jealous North from 3rd – 21st July.
