THE SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA DAY Take a bunch of boaties, a brace of enthusiastic volunteers, dedicated bar staff, support from the SYC ‘Bar Committee’ and a throng of members and visitors. Bring them all together on Australia Day. What do you get? Answer: One fantastic day of fun and exceptional camaraderie – and a wonderful fund raising event. It was the Australia Day “Great Aussie Barbecue”, and it contributed thousands of dollars to the Salvation Army’s Flood Fund Appeal to aid Queensland flood victims. It was a day built on enthusiasm and spirit with more than 30 volunteers dedicating themselves to making the day “work”. With more than 400 members and guests, everyone joined in the fun. There were chocolate wheel raffles, roll-the-pumpkin challenges, a heads & tails game that involved everyone, and prizes for the best/worst dressed ‘ockers’. It was obvious that plenty of people had dug deep into the wardrobes when you saw some of the attire. Commodore Rob Mundle was unrecognisable wearing a bucket hat over a toupé; CEO Neale Hollier arrived complete with a front tooth missing; and the two “terrible Terrys” tried to imitate chefs, slaving over the barbecue while wearing most suggestive buxom aprons. The “welcoming committee” at the front door set the scene. Vice Commodore Ian Hall looked as scruffy as possible while PC Tony Goldner (covered in Australian Flag tattoos) showed a distinct lack of sartorial elegance. His outfit comprised a lifesaver cap, white nose and one of the most garish shirts you can imagine. “G’day, mate”, was the welcome message. The SYC Ladies were so busy selling raffle tickets that they barely had time for a drink. At the bar you had Chairman Noel Thompson, Bob Howard and others washing the glasses and across in the kitchen VC Ian Hall spent the afternoon cleaning 3000 knives and forks – just to earn a drink! Other volunteers worked the floor: Judy Collins said she has never collected so many plates and cleaned so many tables in her entire life. It was a day of colour, style, generosity, laughs and good Aussie food, as well as the occasional glass of one’s favourite Aussie beverage. When it was time to pull up stumps there was no doubt that deep down a proud SYC was as Queensland as pineapples and XXXX – and boy-oh- boy did we raise some money! The Club is really indebted to everyone who contributed. It was such a success that there’s every chance the Australia Day “Great Aussie Barbecue” will become an annual affair. WINE & DINE @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB HOUSE MANAGER’S REPORT This being the Autumn edition of Insync, means that we were supposed to have experienced another glorious Gold Coast Summer. Forgive me, but I think we were all short-changed on a Summer Season this year, and while we have escaped the really disastrous weather, we will continue to feel significant economic effects in the near term. It was very satisfying being involved in our Australia Day special fund raising event. My thanks go to all the volunteers who gave of their time, and members who gave of their wallet to help out our fellow Queenslanders affected by the recent flooding and cyclone events. On the face of it, we, in our little corner of southeast Queensland, have not been too inconvenienced by Queensland’s recent wild weather, but we have already seen its effects economically. Electricity and Water rates have increased dramatically, and when combined with a surge in petrol prices, we are now forced to wear a massive increase in the cost of our fresh goods from all our suppliers. Now we can sit on our hands and do what most businesses do, ie. pass the costs onto the punters, but we have chosen to review a number of strategic options that will allow us to continue providing the best possible dining options at the best possible prices, while remaining economically viable into the future. Believe me when I say, “watch this space as there are some exciting developments on the way”. Our focus in improving the social aspect of our Club is really paying dividends, and feedback from our recent Valentines Day, Australia Day, New Years and Christmas programs have been very pleasing, and we will continue to look for more opportunities for fun and entertainment at the Club. Looking forward to when I next see you at the Club Dale Chapman, House Manager. Not so strange – there was only one competitor in the division. The contest was in the other two divisions, not only for places, but to see if the fleet could get through without any unfortunate sand groundings as had unfortunately taken place in the previous two events. Division 1 was taken out by PC Chris Oxenford in Fairwinds, losing only 24 seconds – a notable score. Division 2 saw the return to form of a strong contender “Ulysses 111” skippered by David McLean who only racked up 19 seconds errors. POWERBOATS @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB THE JOY OF CRUISING Cruising by boat is a lifestyle that involves living for extended time on a boat while traveling from place to place for pleasure (Wikipedia). In recent years the Club has developed a strong program of cruising events through the Power Boat Committee. Wikipedia hits the nail on its head when it says “we do it for pleasure”. Cruising members will know the joys of cruising in company but let us share the news and the idea more widely. I think one of the major joys of cruising with the SYC is the company. Although we come from a wide range of backgrounds, probably cheer for different teams, we are all boaties. We like our boats, being on them, cruising on them, talking about them. Spin-off: got a problem with something on your boat? Chances are a fellow cruiser has had and solved the same problem. Get a new problem on the cruise. Highly likely a fellow cruiser knows how to fix it, is carrying the right tool, and is pleased to lend a hand. Who needs the RACQ on the water? Another great aspect of cruising SYC-style for me has been the way it has introduced us to so many different passages and anchorages. We are blessed with one of the greatest safe water cruising areas in the world. When you look at the chart, the choices can be overwhelming. Each cruise is carefully scouted by committee members, for safety, variety, facilities and most importantly, enjoyability. Our last cruise we anchored off Slipping Sands in ideal conditions for the weekend. On previous Easter’s we have explored the Tweed, and then the Brisbane and Bremer Rivers, longer trips giving a real feeling of cruising and exploring. This Easter? Weather permitting, the northern Bay, Pumicestone Passage, North Straddie, all in good company. And the joy of all, cruising is fun! Much of the fun comes, as Rattie said to Mole, from just messing about in our boats. Sometimes it’s added fun, like the great cook-off (the women beat the men), the Alternative Test Match (the lads thrashed the wenches), the Great Treasure Hunt in the Wake of Captain Jim Hook. The next fun cruise is 26-27 March. Come along. New to cruising? Because there is a good feeling of camaraderie, you could easily feel like you’re intruding into an established clique. You’re not. You’re welcome. Introduce yourself to one of the committee or just about anyone so we can introduce you to the mob. Come cruising. You have nothing to lose but the blues. POWERBOATS @ SOUTHPORT YACHT CLUB BEFORE AFTER THE YACHT By Ian Hall, Vice Commodore Power The yacht “Nereides” sat neglected in a berth on F-arm for quite some time before the staff and students from BTC Employment Services and Training took her under their wing and spent the next 18 months restoring her to her former glory. The “Nereides” is a 23ft Fibreglass yacht from the well known Hood boat builder in Sydney and was previously owned by SYC Member Warwick Oates. On arrival at our facility in Salisbury the vessel was stripped down to bare bones and the mast and rigging removed. The first job was to clear out all the interior fittings and to assess exactly what needed to be done. This boat, and I believe it is common with “Hoods”, had a very spongy deck, so it was decided to cut out the top deck layer and removed the delaminated ply. We replaced this with a layer of Core Mat, epoxied both sides, and then a layer of marine ply and finally epoxied the top deck layer back. A very time consuming job but the end result is a very strong deck and cockpit. All deck fittings were removed and repolished and students spent a lot of time sanding and fairing the hull which was then two-pack sprayed. Finally, in December 2010 the “Nereides” was ready to go back into the water and was relaunched at SYC Main Beach. Since then the mast and rigging has been re-installed and is undergoing a series of sea trials and fine tuning thanks to Commodore Rob Mundle and Bob Howard. The first sail will be a “Twilight Sail” within the next couple of weeks. 22 │ iN SYnC │ Southport Yacht Club
On:POWER BOATS What’s VICIOUS PREDATOR EJECTED FROM SAILING FLEET BOAT Crewman injured, predator survives LOG EVENTS By Wayne Moran MARCH: The dock was buzzing with the usual Wednesday afternoon activity as the sailing fleet prepared for that evening’s Twilight racing. The Saturday 26th: Buck Jones Memorial Trophy crack crew of Daytona, an Etchell class 30’ foot racing boat, was just APRIL: lowered into the water when a yelp and cry of concern was heard by all across the hardstand area. Saturday 30th: Commodore’s Open Trophy Wayne Moran, Daytona’s Executive Officer and Dive Master (a title MAY: received at the Hollywell Bar after once falling off the boat during Sunday 1st: Commodore’s Open Trophy a race), was securing the lifting straps underneath the cockpit floorboards when he was struck, without provocation, by an unseen JUNE: but vicious predator hiding in the darkness of the 8 inches of space between cockpit floor and the hull. Saturday 4th: SYC Open Was it a huge rabid rottweiler? Was it a deadly coastal taipan snake? CRUISES The mystery was soon solved with the appearance of an aggressive rougue possum’s head peering out of the lower space. MARCH: “How are we going to get this thing out of my nice clean boat” Saturday 26th-27th: Fun Event Cruise exclaimed the captain and owner of Daytona, Peter ‘cleanliness is next APRIL: to godliness’ Yeomans. The quick thinking hero of this tale went off to grab the hardstands hose and handed it back down to the ashen faced April 22nd-May 2nd: Brisbane River Cruise Captain. In an instant the decision was made by this fearless Captain to make a field promotion of Daytona’s Executive Officer and Dive Master JUNE: to that of ‘Chief Wildlife Officer’. The hose was handed back to Wayne Saturday 11th-13th: Queens Birthday Cruise with the instruction to “get that #?/*%@ thing off my boat!”. Our hero flew straight into action like a startled possum, forcing the predator from its hiding place with some well placed jets of water. He leapt forward and, with no thought to his own safety, wrestled the beast to the dock. But the stowaway was not finished with Daytona. The unruly predator leapt for its perceived safety only to inadvertently leap back onto Daytona where its newly minted Chief Wildlife Officer again risked life and limb to grab the intruder and again place it gently back onto the dock. The ‘Beast of Hollywell’ was corralled onto the ramp where it made for freedom to the great amusement of the gathered sailors. It has not been seen since. Daytona was delayed in its preparations for that afternoon’s race and did not get to adjust its standing rigging to match the conditions until well into the race. From a handicapped start of second last, Daytona went on to claim second across the line. However the Captain of Daytona was heard saying, as he collected his prize of a dozen beers for 2nd: “if it wasn’t for that damn possum we would have got first and be drinking rum tonight!” NOTE - No animals were hurt or injured in the making of this story! I realised just how lucky we are to have the great sailing environment we do at Hollywell. It was really exciting. We ended on the water. I had a good day finishing in the top 10 in all races and up having 4 races in that first day. The conditions were quite different managing a second place in race 4, this left me in 7th place overall.
