Gregg Thompson, DTM SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: District Director A Toastmaster Since: March 2007 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have held the following roles: Program Quality Director: 2020 to present; Club Growth Director: 2019-2020; Vice President Education: 2016- 2017; President: 2015-2016; and Area Governor: 2014-2015 Toastmasters honors and designations: In 2017, I was runner- up in the District International Speech contest. In 2016, I was the Toastmaster Idol Speech Champion. In 2016, I earned my Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM) award. In 2009, I was the District International Speech Champion and Region 5 semi-finalist. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: My primary background is Information Technology for over 20 years. I also have a background in sales and leadership. I led a very successful independent sales team of over 200 people. I've led my homeowner association as the Treasurer for two terms and then served as President. These things have prepared me to lead my fellow Toastmasters to a successful distinguished district. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: Some of the things I've learned when I was in a leadership position include: Have more patience, Good news goes down, bad news goes up, and Always recognize your people. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: Our district is fairly new, and I would like to see it succeed. I have so much to offer and it would be a wonderful opportunity to give back to an organization which has given me so much. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: The District's major objectives are building new clubs and retaining members. The best way to do this in my opinion is to motivate the members by incentivizing them and rewarding them for all levels of achievement of this goal.
Dionne Leggin, TC5 SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Program Quality Director A Toastmaster Since: March 2016 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have held the following roles: Club Growth Director: 7/1/2020 – Present; District Retention Chair: 7/1/2019 – 6/30/2020; Area Director: 9/11/2019 – 6/30/2020; President: 7/1/2017 – 6/30/2018; and Vice President of Education: 7/1/2016 – 6/30/2017. Toastmasters honors and designations: During my term as Vice President of Education and President of the Broadview Toastmasters Club 3303, we made President’s Distinguished with all 10 goals. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: One of my most rewarding experiences was being a Childcare Worker. I had the awesome opportunity of broadening adolescent children's knowledge on the path of independence. In my role as Program Quality Director, I see the same opportunity in helping our district leaders and members become better speakers and leaders. As Program Quality Director, training will be key in ensuring our members are well equipped so they are the best leaders they can be. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: I have found it to be true that at work and in Toastmasters, that even though I was the manager/leader, those that I lead, their input was not only needed but necessary to make the team successful. I did not run a team where what I said goes all the time. I also learned that it is important to work alongside those you manage and not just work from an "ivory tower." This past year I have learned that when expectation levels are not met, I need to question why and not make negative assumptions; and understand what tools/training I can provide to make them successful. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: Serving in the district would give me the opportunity to give back what I received from the leadership in my club, area, and district. I want to help create a safe environment that filters through the district for those that desire to lose their fear of speaking in public or find their inner strength to be leaders themselves. Serving would be rewarding because you can actually get to see how your encouraging words, constructive evaluations and "pushing" continues to manifest into great speakers and leaders who in turn beget more great leaders and speakers. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: I believe the District's main objective is to continually train and educate its members in a safe, non-judgmental learning environment by developing both their leadership and speaking skills. It is this philosophy I believe is what makes Toastmasters successful; leaders give back to repeat the cycle of creating more and more leaders.
Marc Maschino, DTM SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Club Growth Director A Toastmaster Since: October 2011 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have held the following roles: Club Positions: President (PRES) 2013-2014 and 2018-2019; Vice President Education (VPE) 2012-2015; Vice President Membership (VPM) 2011-2012 (Pre-charter); and Treasurer (TREAS) 2015-2016. District Positions: Area Governor 2014-2015; Assistant to Division Director 2015-2016; Assistant to Program Quality Director 2016-2017; Division Director 2017-2018; Club Retention Chair 2018-2019; Club Extension Co-Chair 2019-2020. Toastmasters honors and designations: I have earned multiple Certificates of Participation for all the functionary roles held in a speech contest (all roles held at least once); roles held in makeup trainings (all roles held except for VPPR Trainer); and for special events such as Train- the-Trainer. Recognized as Toastmasters for the Humorous Speech Contest at District 30's 2017 Fall Conference. Recognized as Contest Chair of the International Speech Contest at D103's 2020 Annual Conference that was held virtually. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: The relevant leadership experience I have comes from the positions described above. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: It's a Toastmasters principle but I really believe the most effective leader is one who provides his/her teams with the resources and support they want and also those they need but don't know they want. In other words, servant leadership and mentorship. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: Having reached the DTM level, it is more satisfying to me and also more useful to give back with all that I've learned with Toastmasters. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: The district has established itself, yet it is in a fragile position as far as our clubs are concerned: 40% are eligible for coaches and don't have one. I would first meet with the current Club Growth Director to learn the latest information on these clubs, prioritize them by reverse chartering dates and provide such priorities to the Club Retention Chair as many of the older clubs have been in this position before and should know how to get out of it already.
Mary Szabo, DTM SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Club Growth Director A Toastmaster Since: September 2014 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have held the following roles: 2015 - Club Treasurer; 2016 - Club Secretary; 2017 - Club President; 2018 - Area Director; 2019 - Assistant Division Director and Club Vice President Membership; 2020 - Division Director and Club Sergeant-at-Arms. Toastmasters honors and designations: On July 13, 2020, I earned my Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: As a "resource development manager" in a matrixed organization, my role is all about taking the people I have and making them better so that they are well equipped to support our ever-changing technology division. I stretch outside my role to fill gaps with the primary focus in solving problems. Most recently, I have focused on seizing opportunities instead of solving problems. I am known to share my crazy ideas and persuade others to implement them. I am a change agent (sometimes I feel like a cheerleader) when it comes to organizational change management. I am methodical in my approaches while trying to be flexible when there are changing requirements. I am known to set lofty goals and strive to complete them by communicating small, phased goals over time. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: As Club President, I learned that I needed to be a voice of reason and a champion for my team. I was a "fan" convincing them that they could do it! As Area Director, I learned that I needed to "be a friend" to the Club Presidents and other club officers. From that approach, I still have some great friends in these clubs. As Assistant Division Director, I learned that I needed to ask for help and not assume others could not help me. I leveraged my resources more than I thought I needed to and I strengthened friendships as a result. As Division Director, I have learned (so far), that I am only as good as my weakest link. I also need to stay in touch with my team encouraging them and supporting them in everything they do. In all positions, I was a problem solver, cheerleader, direction provider, helper, a voice of reason, and a friend. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: I am a servant leader. I like to solve problems and contribute towards greater goods bigger than me. I am a problem solver and opportunity exploiter. I have crazy ideas I could apply with a team to realize great things. Personally, I believe I should be a Director within my corporate job. They aren't hiring Directors; they aren't promoting me. I need to be a Director somewhere to showcase my skills. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: 1. Maintain and grow membership ~ I can do this by building upon what the prior Club Growth Directors have done. Also, digging deep into each aspect of Club Growth: coaches, mentors, new clubs. Be a resource and advocate for our district leadership team. Be a mentor and coach to the Club Growth Team. 2. Maintain and grow new leaders within the District ~ I can do this by being a coach and a mentor. Maintaining and growing existing friendships. 3. Identify and enroll new clubs ~ I can do this by building upon what prior Cub Growth Directors have done. Further grow and implement the vision from prior Club Growth Directors. Do some research and maybe some experiments to grow the District. I am part of the Club Growth Team now. I'd like to build upon what's already been established and do a strategy / planning session for what our focus should be next term.
Herbert Obah, PM3 SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Central South (B) Division Director A Toastmaster Since: August 2019 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I currently serve as Club Secretary and Area Director. Toastmasters honors and designations: I won 2nd place in an area speech contest in 2020. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: I work as a LV electrician and I have to work in a team atmosphere which requires intense interpersonal skills. Toastmasters gives me a platform to improve my interpersonal skills. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: I worked as a Youth Counselor and I had a group of children who were under my leadership. I learned that you must have a vision, servant heart and passion for what you do. These three virtues allow a great development of those under your leadership. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: As a District Leader, I would have more of an area of influence to make the greatest impact on others. Also, it challenges me to learn new skills in a new position. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: The District’s main mission is to become a distinguished district. I will encourage and motivate the Division to work hard towards this mission.
Nikeya Young, PM3 SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Central South (B) Division Director A Toastmaster Since: February 2019 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have held the following officer roles: Club President (2019-2020, 2020- present) for Homewood-Flossmoor Toastmasters Club 1451; along with Vice President Education (2020-present) for Homewood- Flossmoor Toastmasters Club 1451. In addition, I have held the role of Area 81 Director (Division F) from 2020-present. Toastmasters honors and designations: I have earned my Presentation Mastery Level 4 (PM4) award. Also, I won 1st place at the area level in both the International and Table Topics Speech Contests (January 2020). Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: In addition to my present roles within the Toastmasters organization, I am also a Certified Master Life Coach/Author/Speaker, and former educator for Chicago Public Schools. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: In my previous leadership positions, I have learned how to motivate others by leading by example. When you are operating in a spirit of excellence, others around you will be inspired to rise to the occasion. I have also learned the importance of effective communication with your team. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: I strongly believe in the Toastmasters organization! Some of the most POWERFUL motivational speakers and influencers in the WORLD have gotten their start in Toastmasters International. District 103 is phenomenal, and I want to continue to work to help take our district to higher heights. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: Support the growth of its current clubs/members, and Increase (bring on new clubs and members). I would work to achieve these goals by encouraging my Area Directors as they're overseeing each of their clubs and training them whenever necessary.
Madison Farrell, LD3 SLATED CANDIDATE FOR: Central North (C) Division Director A Toastmaster Since: January 2020 Toastmasters officer role(s) held and length of service: I have served as Club Vice President Education for club #1594170; Club President for club #1594170; and Area Director for C25 of District 103 Toastmasters. Toastmasters honors and designations: I have earned Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the Leadership Development Path of Pathways. Relevant work experience and how it relates to Toastmasters and my role as a District officer: During my time in Toastmasters, I have served as my club's Vice President of Education, Club President, and an Area Director for Area C25. This has given me extensive insight into how clubs operate, including what works well and where there are gaps. This knowledge of not just my club but the 3 other clubs in my area would be very beneficial in making the administrative changes needed to help the clubs in my district continue to grow. Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: In my role as an Area Director, I've learned how to better communicate with clubs to find out what they're passionate about and what goals they have for their members. I've also learned that sometimes you have to be creative with your solutions! I've learned a lot form the clubs in my area and how they've been able to successfully adapt to changing circumstances throughout the pandemic. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: I love the mission of Toastmasters. I love the growth I've been able to see in myself as well as the friends I've made in my club and other clubs. I am confident I have the qualities needed to continue to grow the district so it can continue to reach out and support up and coming leaders like myself. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: A lot of clubs have had to readjust due to the pandemic. Some have been able to do so relatively quickly and easily, but some clubs need extra assistance. The heart and soul of this international organization is our clubs. Passionate people getting together bi-weekly or monthly or whatever recurrence works best to grow as leaders and speakers. The major objective I see for the district is working to ensure our clubs have the support they need to sustain virtual club meetings, leadership seminars, and trainings to continue to grow in Pathways and their leadership abilities.

Lessons I learned from previous leadership positions: Attitude to learn, lead, and adapt to changes with undivided focus on core values of Toastmasters. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: I wish to share my learning and experiences with individuals from all walks of life. In my opinion, here are the district mission’s major objectives and how I would work to achieve them: I believe that Toastmasters is not only a place where leaders are made, but is rather a way of life, a proven technology that transforms body, mind, and speech of a member who deliberates and offers them in the process. I have termed it BMS Technology.

To step up to the challenge and prepare according to the demands. To be humble, walk the talk & lead the way. The reason I want to serve as a District officer is because: As an Area Director, I aligned myself to help the district achieve its objectives through the year and also understood the crucial link an Area Director plays between the District Leaders and clubs.
